SPOILERS!! Something also worth noting is that all of the S-tiers are in the same EXP Group (Medium Slow, which is actually faster than Fast in part of the early-game, and the Fast growth rate Pokémon have bad Brock splits). Maybe that contributed more than the Poison typing. After all, the amount of opponents in Yellow that just derp in front of Poison types is far fewer than in Red/Blue.
@InfernosReaper Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the early game has the most bog-down points(Brock, Rival 2/Misty), so that better XP progression is great for getting over that hump. By the time that's over, the game's opened up and the player can pick the best route for a particular mon, so reduced or exhausted EXP benefits don't matter anymore. Kinda reminds me of an article by one of the D&D 3rd Developers where he talks about how different XP progression charts are a poor point of balance, because most of a game is at the lower levels and a character needed a few more encounters to level up isn't really keep them from dominating until the cap unless the gap is so high they're basically useless. Moreover, once that cap is hit, the power gap doesn't go away. Thus, balance needs to be attained within the entity designs themselves.

Makes me wonder how things would change if you gave top-tier Pokémon a worse EXP curve or low-tier Pokémon a better curve 🤔

A great result by Victreebel, knocking Gengar down is a great achievement. Wait until Gen 4 where you can run a physical Vileplume or Victreebel. I loved Grass types so much as a kid that it really got me into keeping carnivorous plants. I had a massive terrarium with heaps of rare ones that my grandparents had spent a lot of money helping me make. I’d also catch flies to feed to them - something I became quite good at. Fun fact: The Victreebell line is from a lesser-known carnivorous plant called a "pitcher plant". In real life these plants have an open-ended stomach that faces upwards and lures in insects (also sometimes frogs and mice) with sweet nectar near the lip, and the slippery surface causes the prey to fall in the stomach. Some species of this plant also have a leaf over the top of the stomach to prevent rain from diluting the stomach acid, just like you see pictured in Victreebell's sprite. It's actually much more efficient at pest control than Venus flytraps because they don't have to fully digest something to take in more prey. It was never a flower bulb... it was a stomach.

Venusaur is basically a worse Victreebel in terms of these playthoughs. Very similar learnsets and pretty similar stats (same special, Venusaur has more speed and defense but those don't really matter, Victreebel has slightly more attack which I guess helps a little bit). Big difference is that Victreebel starts with sleep powder and razor leaf whereas Venusaur has to wait for levels 55 and 30 for those moves.. Venusaur getting growth, which Victreebel doesn't have access to, at level 43 might make some of the late game a tiny bit quicker, but it won't offset the huge advantage Victreebel gets from having,such a powerful status move right from the start. I predict Venusaur will be around the bottom of the S tier. Still very fast in the grand scheme but not quite on Victreebel's level.

I go back-and-forth between what my top 2-3-4 Pokémon are, but Victreebel is always in that top tier discussion. I loved the grass type growing up playing RBY. I discovered Razor Leaf and how it always got a critical hit with Victreebel's speed. My only real complaint would be why it had to have a sub-type of poison. If it has to be that way, then Victreebel should have learned Sludge IMO. With STAB it would be a pretty effective move - not to mention alongside Victreebel's high Base Attack stat. Anyway, I love the videos and glad to be a supporter. Keep them coming! 🎉

Vileplume actually is my favourite pokemon or maybe it's oddish. As a kid I was obsessed with moves that restored hp and since the oddish line has absorb it became a pokemon I often had on my team. Its attacks weren't necessarily very strong, but thanks to being able to heal it could deal with a lot of trainers. One of the things that I can clearly remember from playing as a kid is that I once got lost in the seafoam islands. All my pokemon got knocked out by the wild pokemon, except for Vileplume who did its best to protect me and could withstand a lot more attacks thanks to being able to heal. Eventually Vileplume ran out of pp and after some struggles it also fainted. In the end it didn't matter that it lasted so much longer and it only meant that it took longer to get out of cave, but this memory has stuck with me and has helped keep it at the top as my favourite pokemon. Vileplume is often overshadowed by other grass types, even from the same generation, but it has some unique moves have allowed it to shine for me in competitive and in playthroughs that doesn't really matter anyway. Victreebel is a pokemon that I didn't really use in gen 1. I did have pokemon blue at some point, but bulbasaur has leech seed which made it my favourite starter and much better than bellsprout. I did use bellsprout in gen 2 since you get it earlier than oddish and I didn't like removing pokemon from my team as a kid, but oddish still got a lot of use in gen 2. I never got leaf stones in gen 2 as a kid, so I still didn't use victreebel in gen 2. Since Victreebel has better offensive stats I think it will have an advantage, but I hope that Vileplume will manage to catch up in later playthroughs.

Always look forward to new vids from Scott! I never cared much for Vileplume tbh though, not surprised at it's performance comparatively.

I always liked the Bellsprout line a little more, but that might be Blue bias lol; My big sister knew nothing of Pokémon, but thought Vileplume was cute! Also, Petal Dance was one of my favorite moves as a kid, because it had lots of PP, the animation was really pretty, and the thought of some kind of flower dance just seemed really cute!

I loved oddish so much when i was little (i still do). My brother had a figure I loved with a ball-bearing inside, and i love the card illustrated by Keiji Kinebuchi. When I first played fire red I caught an oddish and used her all the way through. Vileplume is one of my favourite gen 1 pokemon.

I remember those pokemon figures with the ball bearing. Had a couple of them.. can't recall any specifics. They kinda bothered me because they didn't stand well due to the ball, and it also didn't really do anything

I am so excited for this one, most hyped I've been since your porygon playthrough. I do think victrebell will win, just cause it's faster, hits harder, and has better moves. But both are some of my favorite Gen 1 pokemon and I hope it's close

I’ve always liked vileplume. Ever since ash saved Erica’s smelly gloom back in burning gym.

That is why Gloom is Erika's ace pokemon in yellow. I always wondered what would have happened if Pikachu fought Gloom. Gloom was KO'ing all of Ash's pokemon but Pikachu went toe to toe with Sabrina's Kadabra which seemed more dangerous.

Hey Scott, amazing vid. That’s all! Keep up the good work. Yellow vids are my favourite and the reason I fell in love with your channel

Love this video, great to see that both pokemon are really good, though no surprise victreebel is very good(though surprising it is THIS good) it has always had a reputation of being a powerhouse. More surprising is the power on Vileplume, interesting to see it is so good of a pokemon, I always took it for granted, but it is actually really good it seems. If/when you get around to playing a zigzagoon run you should name him Oy after the best billy-bumbler, who looks kinda like one.

Just noticed you edited the game file to put Scott and Butt as options for names. I like it!

@Scott's Thoughts first time I caught it. :) I like it. Great job with this video. I 100% was super surprised by the results and also how poison types are so low yet the dual poison types (fully evolved) are near the top. Tentacruel is going to be very interesting.

26:38 fittingly enough for this video, Erika's aces are almost always two members of the Oddish and Bellsprout lines together, most often Vileplume and Victreebel! Though I do agree that Tangela feels more specific to her, and it indeed becomes her ace in the HGSS rematch in the form of a Tangrowth.

Awesome video Scott. I'm surprised at just how well both pokemon did. I can't see Tentacruel doing as well due to its lack of a starting water move. It doesn't match up well with the first 3 gyms but gets ice beam for Erika.
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Жыл бұрын
I find it cool that Tentacruel also gets Mega Drain for Lorelei. Most water Pokémon have a slow fight against her without it.
@rayorcc Жыл бұрын
Wow, seeing both of them speed through so fast! In previous casual playthroughs Victreebel always was a great member on my teams, but even beating out Gengar is a great feat! Also very much looking forward to the Tentacruel playthrough. And thank you (again) for putting so much effort into things like the overlay, the production quality of your vidoes is phenomenal!

Awesome info on how you choose the order and such to play them. Really interesting watching them race and be so close through the early game (up to koga Vileplume atm) Enjoyable videos. I like these races and even though I had red when i was a kid I like weepinbell more (i have interesting relationships with version exclusives in the early games which I got and didn't get a choice)

Came through with the "my favorite Pokemon was Butterfree" yes boi! Early game especially, and one of my most ever used Pokemon, Paras/Parasect. Maybe #1 since Breloom is in fewer games.
