I always imagine the “in universe” events that transpire in each of these runs, like every battle that wasn’t reset after. The rival probably thinks you’re some unbeatable super trainer who he could never defeat a single Pokémon of, while the light years trainer from Brock’s gym that you grinded on for ages is probably thinking “that pallet town kid I beat 18 times in a row before he finally got one up on me is champion now? Huh, go figure”

Another argument against “back in my day, we didn’t know about badge boost” is that back in my day I didn’t know about IVs or DVs, that stuff was way too mysterious for a 7 year old. I vividly remember doing a link battle with my lvl 100 team against another kid’s lvl 100 team and he slaughtered me. Afterward he was like “you used the rare candy glitch didn’t you” and I was like yeah and he said rare candies don’t make your Pokémon as strong and like that’s the extent to which I knew about EVs.
@N120152 жыл бұрын
I think the game sorta implies that in some titles. Emerald maybe? I think indeed it was that game explaining how Rare candies would level a mon but it wasn't as efficient as training. I though it was a bit of an anime plot but indeed it's just EVs and specialized training, something you get easily on X/Y due to supertraining.
@bongodavid1232 жыл бұрын
I literally refused to use rare candies after my brother told me they didn't make your mons as strong. I didn't use rare candies until like sword and shield maybe. But they are highly unhelpful unless you do like jrose and spend almost 10 at a time because getting one level doesn't take that long normally.
@bortzanator30182 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I remember hearing the same things but not knowing why. I remember wondering why my pokemon were always better than wilds at the same level too. Never put 2 and 2 together back then. But then again 10yo me's plan to get past Brock was my pikachu and 5 pidgeys with sand attack, so no wonder.
@henrymars66262 жыл бұрын
The only time games acknowledge EVs is through those NPCs who tell you something along the lines of "Pokémon who battle a lot are stronger than Pokémon you just caught." DVs/IVs are acknowledged through the "all Pokémon are unique, even if they're the same species" NPCs. I didn't know about either of these mechanics until I started watching a bunch of nuzlockes and they started talking about "Oh my pokémon has bad IVs in this stat" or "i knocked out some of this to gain some Speed EVs". Pokémon genetics be just as complicated as real genetics smh
@Earthboundmike2 жыл бұрын
The game implied back in red/blue that pokemon you caught were better cuz you trained them. I assumed it was because I beat pokemon - but there was some sort of limit - I usually would train against the elite 4 cuz they had "the best pokemon". I didn't realize how right I was, or learn why til way, way later. Gen 4 actually, when I learned that things had changed (since I skipped gen 3) and what pokemon you knocked out VERY much affects what you can have stat wise. I'm still torn on what I prefer, specific training of stats or maxing out all of them like gen 1/2. On one hand, the specific training brings out more strategy competitively, on the other hand, sometimes getting a specific stat, say I don't know, special attack, is usually intensely irritating early game. No one wants to get to the end game and find out your special attacker is 1/3 attack invested, with the rest in HP and speed. I don't at least. Also this comment got godamn long.
@Nifty020202 жыл бұрын

27:52 To add to the point that Badge Boosts are fine as used, you can't use the game as game freak intended. Any pokemon you use sword dance for damage, will gain speed and even more attack. Rhydon leers at you? You're gaining speed, special and attack. Focus Energy is supposed to raise your critical chance. It actually removes your crit chance. Should you start using focus energy to raise your crit, because that is what we all would do as kids? Of course not. You play the cards you are dealt. This is a glitch noone can avoid playing gen1, so might as well just call it an unintended feature. Gen1 giveth, and Gen1 taketh away.

I think using Badge Boost glitch is fine. Playing like we did in our childhood is secondary and it's a goal already met when Jrose uses only one Pokémon. The main point of his videos is not "what" he does, but "how" he does. Using one Pokémon sets up the challenge, using his strategies brings the entertainment. Even if he didn't use the Badge Boost glitch, it would still be a tad different from our childhood anyway: I doubt most people here would know how to properly use stats moves, TM and how to use the mechanics behind unusual moves (Bide, Wrap, Roar, etc) to their favor.
@dashhuber2901 Жыл бұрын
Starting moves are the most important part of getting a quick Brock. High stats don't come into play until after, when almost every pokemon gets an expanded move selection, because Brock is low enough in level that stats aren't that different.

I’d be curious to see how Cubone does. It has a surprising amount of coverage but not great stats and no badge boost move unless you use mimic.

Starmie is my favorite gen 1 poke, I remember sweeping through the elite 4 with thunder and surf in the low 60s. Granted I was using items, but I predict this run will be very similar.

I'm looking forward to when he eventually gets around to doing Porygon. It has a fantastic movepool but those stats are rough.
@YOSSARIAN3132 жыл бұрын
It does start with an attack boosting move to make brock less awful and has good enough bulk to take a hit. It's also normal type which I'd really good once you beat brock. It might be lowkey good in a solo run
@765craven42 жыл бұрын
@@YOSSARIAN313 Yeah. I figure it would probably do alright. It's speed is pretty abysmal though.

Thanks for keeping the random ether positions in the edit :) Staryu was the first pokemon I ever saw...a card back in the 4th grade

Ooh, I've been looking forward to the eventual Staryu run! (And Starmie later on!) (2:02) Actually, I believe Leech Seed heals HP equal to the damage it deals, without being halved like other draining moves. So, it would take 2 HP from your Staryu and give 2 HP to your rival's Bulbasaur. (8:50) Argh... You'd think you'd remember to save after winning important fights now... (9:55) Oh, man! It's badge boost glitch time! (12:44) It's almost obligatory for there to be at least one Gen. 1 miss during a run. (13:56) Right, he's Cashier Surge right now, if I recall correctly. (14:27) LOL, Surge couldn't even beat a Water-type that he scored a critical hit on! (14:55) I had been suggesting Bag Boy, but I guess Bus Boy works too! (18:24) Another Gen. 1 miss with your Thunderbolt there. (22:39) "No way? No way!" (Wait, this isn't Sonic & Knuckles. :P) (24:39) *Raises hand. Ooh, ooh! I know! Because this one gym badge boosts your Special, which will be amplified by the badge boost glitch. (31:43) Welcome back, Count! (33:40) Wow, 12 badge boosts. I wonder how many it would take to cap/overflow your stats? (33:55) Welp, I saw that untimely level up coming a mile away. This almost always seems to happen, like a curse of some sort. (35:06) And, it's almost obligatory for you to lose a battle because you scored a critical hit that ignores the badge boost glitch. (41:10) STAB Surf would do more damage than Blizzard to Aerodactyl, and is more accurate, just in case you overlooked that fact. (43:17) Arcanine missed with its first Leer there, so you have one less badge boost than you're stating here. (43:35) 7 badge boosts, actually, but that is still a lot. (44:00) Hit, no crit! And that's game! Congratulations, Staryu, for first-try beating the entire Elite Four and Champion! (44:22) Yeah, Staryu was amazing in the end-game, and could've been great from the very beginning if it simply started with Water Gun (or even Bubble) and didn't have to wait until level 17 to get past Brock.

I feel like the question is no longer "Can you?" but rather "How fast can you?" Outside of any Pokémon that can't learn TMs in Gen I, I'm fairly certain EVERY single Pokémon can.

Staryu/starmie is the most underrated non legendary Pokemon. Having the ability of water/psychic with thunderbolt is deadly. Not to mention the high special defense.
@noukan422 жыл бұрын
Underrated... it is never been below UU as far as i am aware lol.
@campbelltsamuel2 жыл бұрын
@@noukan42 it's pretty underrated. You just watched Staryu one hit KO lance at level 60. Yes it knew blizzard. But that's what I mean. It learns psychic. Water and can be taught ice and electric. There's no other pokemon in gen 1 that can do that as far as I'm aware of. Maybe Slowbro but that's it. And starmie has the same defense. Slowbro is the slowest in the game too. Did I mention starmie has one of the fastest speeds? It outsped Aerodactyl.

I feel like this can be a surprisingly quick run, especially after Staryu learns bubble beam
@yesec92 жыл бұрын
SPOILERS: it ended up being psychic, surf, thunderbolt, blizzard, and badge-boost-glitch shenanigans with Harden, that made the run...bubblebeam was an improvement, but it didn't make it easy just yet. And finally Ice Beam, which could have had a bigger role in the run had Jrose not screwed up with planning his moveset
