Nearly four years into sobriety. In the past, whenever I tried to moderate my alcohol consumption I felt like I was missing out. Sleep was massively affected and I got horrendous 'hanxiety'. So much happier removing alcohol completely. The increasing range of lovely AF beers has allowed me to continue being a beer lover.

Respect man. Loved the balanced and pragmatic view on alcohol as appose to the usual ‘everything is bad for you’ philosophy popularised by many KZbin fitness and self help personalities

Most people (or lots at least) can moderate and manage to combine training and drinking - but now, two years into sobriety I seriously don't understand how I managed to do any training, perpetually being drunk or on the hangover-spectrum. Now I'm twice as strong, I get shit done, and I sleep like a baby, and I'm so happy I managed to quit in my 30s and not 50s or not at all. Quitting was hard, but only for a matter of weeks, from then on it's only positives.

7 years sober and training harder and longer than I ever have ,well done for doing it now and not later like I did,as Fergus says I still enjoy the "ceremony" of a beer by drinking non alcholic beer but maintain my training volume and my abilty to cope with work stress is so much better

Since owning an Apple Watch I'm being confronted with the disastrous effects of Alcohol every weekend (and weekdays - I'm a student). But since owning my Whoop it's even worse. As if the 2-day hangovers I'm cursed with aren't enough my recovery score is low for days on end too. Yet we have to acknowledge the important role Alcohol plays in social events and "escaping" from the busy work & school week. I'm glad you take this balanced stance in this video. Shows great maturity.

It was with my road to ultramarathon running and trying to "moderate" alcohol that I've personally found I couldn't do it and was a lot more addicted to it than I thought. Most people who consume alcohol regularly might believe they can stop if they wish. My racing goals made me want to lose body fat and get rid of alcohol and empty calories. It was with a shock I found out I couldn't just "drink on weekends" or "special occasions." But with some effort, I could go on 1 or 2 months 100% alcohol-free before some event but unable to do it regularly. To me, no alcohol at all is the best.

As someone who lives in a country where alcohol consumption for a normal person around the age of 25 is excessive as hell, this gives me some comfort. The drinking culture is similar to the UK, and during COVID I nearly didn't drink any alcohol for a year and a half. Now, back to a more "normal" life of a 25-year-old and I have realised that I don't even like drinking, although social events are steadily going up. I'll start planning and choosing the bigger events and then, the rest of the time, steer clear of alcohol.

Australia by any chance? It seems like the majority(myself included sometimes😅) go drinking every weekend and/or go out clubbing etc every weekend after they turn 18

I have two MAYBE three strong liquor drinks (mixed with ginger ale) and I’ll still be able to train the next day… I’m 28 years old and drink loads of water before bed so I recover a little better. But if ur a pro athlete, it’s best to be optimal ALWAYS. Drinking in the off-season only, in moderation obviously

2 years sober now. Best decision i have ever made. No more forced social drinking to feel included. I'd rather be alone than in poor company.

Based on my whoop experience, 3+ drinks in a day means I'm in the low reds the next day. Also, while one drink has a minimal effect, two in the late evening also reduces my recovery.

Timing is 100% something to consider, for example, a Sunday lunchtime glass of red wine has a lot less effect than a fat glass of whisky right before bed haha!

Getting a garmin watch with the body battery function allow me to see numbers describing how I felt after a night of ruined sleep after as little as one drink. That played a part in my quitting and I couldn't be happier about it

Fergus - I love your content. However, at 53, I’m feeling like it’s so over my head. I’m working on a couch to 5k program and lifting whole body 3x week. My goal is to work up to the point I can do one of your programs. Any tips or ideas? Thanks

What if you take glutathione and sleeping pills :-) I’ve done several races after having several glasses of wine. But yes I feel much better training without any. I’ve never had a drink before working out and I try to not drink too late at night. I’m on my game most of the time but I like to drink from time to time. When you get older those hangovers are horrible

I drink like a college freshman every couple weeks and have gone 4:09 for a 70.3. I take pride in the fact that I can go out and have fun and rebound the next day for a workout. It can definitely be done but it's not for everyone

For me it works reasonably well to get shitfaced a few times a month and drink nothing inbetween. You get your fun for a day, are pretty screwed up the next and fully functional after.
