Good job, Dave. I have used many of these types of plugs over the decades and never had a problem with one. I made up a kit to carry in my Model 3. If the puncture can be plugged, I can fix it faster than waiting for roadside assistance.

Thanks for the video Dave. I have put some plugs in tires myself and you did a great job. I like the plugs much better than going to a tire shop and listening to a lot of crap about needing to replace all of the tires. On another note, when our MS tires had to be replaced at about 28 k miles, I did away with the foam lined tires. Some people say the foam lined tires have less road noise and that may be true. I am 73 and don't hear that well but our MS rides smoother without the Tesla recommended foam lined tires. I came to that conclusion with my 73 year old butt test and my butt will not be flim flamed by some young tire salesman!

We had a screw go through the rear tyre of a model X although we didn't know it. However, it caused the sound absorbing material to come loose on the inside of the tyre and this caused serious wheel balance issues. Just thought I'd mention it as we are not the only ones to have experienced this.

Thanks Dave I just ordered 2 kits 1 for each of my cars , but one thing that's very important is have a tool to remove the screw and something else for a fulcrum to set underneath the tool on the tire to help pry it out this is the most important piece as much as plugging the tire kit does not come with these removal tools . This can be very difficult. Make sure you add these to your kit. And of course a good air pump . I carry a full sized spare and jack in my Model 3 . I'm going to test if my jack will even fit under the car with the puck for protection with a completely flat tire. Because that will lower the car at least 4 or 5"

Good video, only thing I do different is to set the torque wrench to 65 lb ft and do an initial torque and then final torque at 129 ft lb and I only click it once. PS. I switched from Goodyear RSA2 to Goodyear touring w/o foam. The touring is pretty quiet without the foam and it's cheaper!

Thanks Dave. Can you provide a link to the tire repair kit you bought? And a note... Years ago, we used to chalk a lug and the hole for it so that we could put the tire back on the same orientation, so as not to screw up the balance of the tire. I don't know if that's still current. I have plugged motorcycle tires before, but never a car tire. But I have nothing against plugging. Obviously if you have a spare tire, swapping it for the flat is the quickest way to get back on the road. But more and more cars are coming without spares these days. I did take delivery of my Model Y on Dec 30 and I think I got the free year. I have only ever been to 1 SC station and it didn't charge me for it. Planning a road trip next weekend so I'll find out then.

Hi Dave, the tool that puts the pug in the tire did not cut the pug when you pulled it out. That tool has a gap at the tip, when you pull back gap opens up and the plug comes free of the tool. Unless the tool you have works different ?

I’ve plugged lots of tesla tires all with except results, no failures yet. Most tire places can’t handle a patch on the Continental quiet foam and glue filled tires. Patches don’t like to adhere well. A plug solves this especially when your in the boonies

Dave, my sister-in-law has a model X and the foam liner broke away on at least one of her tires and she replaced all four tires at Discount Tire. I’m not sure how good that foam lining is. I am sure the foam deadens some sound but may not be reliable.
@Scott-sm9nm
@Scott-sm9nm 3 жыл бұрын
That is puzzling because of all the years I've monitored the Tesla forums this is the first I've heard of the foam liner breaking away. It has not happened on any of the 3 sets I've had. I suspect the foam deadening is measurable in the lab but not sure if it is genuinely noticeable in real life. I've had good luck with the tires for wear and traction, however.
@evdave528
@evdave528 3 жыл бұрын
It’s for sounds but it’s very light wouldn’t think you need to replace a tire for that only, hope it wasn’t a sales tactic to sell her more tires

@@Scott-sm9nm I actually saw a video on this very thing happening on KZbin. I’m not sure which Vlogger it was but the foam lining broke away on at least one of their tires and they had to stop and have it replaced. The lining broke away on that tire or it was defective when they received it and they had to stop again and have the tire replaced. So I have seen at least one instance of this on KZbin. Unfortunately for them they were traveling away from home at the time. In my sister-in-law‘s case the discount tire personnel got on the phone with Tesla and told them what was happening and that the tire was defective. They only had like 12,000 miles on them at the time. Tesla prorated the cost of tires and she replaced them with a different tire.
@Scott-sm9nm
@Scott-sm9nm 3 жыл бұрын
@@senordockman1138, it certainly sounds like a defect as you would think that centrifugal force just constantly keeps the foam pressed to the tire ... ie. not stressing the adhesive that holds it there.
