I found the 340 Weatherby to be a perfect cartridge to make a poor man’s wildcat cartridge in a handi rifle. I took the 340 sizing die and on a lathe cut off the bottom of the die a little at a time until the ID of the bottom of the die was .501” diameter. Then sized 45-70 brass and it makes a perfect rimmed .338 cartridge that can be loaded from mild to wild. I found a 340 Weatherby take off barrel on eBay and turned the OD to fit closely in a 20 ga. H&R break action shotgun barrel and epoxied it in the shotgun barrel permanently. Made a rim recess on the barrels breech for the rim and cut the breech face for the ejector and used a factory 45-70 ejector. It needs to be fitted to a SB 2 receiver for high pressure loads but would work on the shotguns receiver SB 1 if you just want to load light cast bullet loads up to 40 K pressure. My .02 cents .
@lz3572Ай бұрын
That is great ballistics. That load is all you need for any North American game. If you can get MOA accuracy and can handle the 43 ft lbs of recoil. I know you said you can handle it. But you are still young. 30 years ago I would have said the same thing as you. But now a 68 year old cancer survivor I have gone with the new 6.5 PRC. As I don’t hunt Brown Bears. Just Deer and Elk. But I will say ,that is one gorgeous rifle!! 👍

We always talk about pounds of recoil as a measure, but with hunters ranging anywhere from 100-400 pounds its sort of only half the equation. Give yourself as much as you can handle. Even 30ftlbs of recoil might only be 10% of body mass for you and not a big deal. 22 might be a mans gun in the hands of a 10yo hunting rabbits. 458lott might be a mans gun in the hands of a 325lb gorrila on the savannah. I’m not man enough to shoot that nearly as well as I can shoot a 270 WSM, 6.5 PRC, 6.8 Western, 280 AI, etc. (or even smaller) Really doubt you are either. Could we ever get you to shoot a Kraft Drill (to standard) with it and show your results vs the same drill with a .308 or something? 12 shots and can be fired as slowly as needed. Genuinely curious to see how that compares with your ability to shoot a 308 Winchester or something in that category. “Handling recoil” has ZERO to do with comfort or toughness. That’s the huge fallacy in this conversation. Recoil is about our ability to place accurate shots from field positions, see your own impacts in the scope, rapidly re-engage targets if needed, and maintain correct muzzle positions through recoil in order to achieve a favorable exit condition/position for the bullet. Guns move during recoil before the bullet exits the muzzle. Proven on high speed camera by Bryan Litz (so not conjecture or opinion). If recoil moves muzzle off axis, we are less accurate. For this reason, almost every shooter, ever (Soy Boy up to Macho Man), shoots better with less recoil. At some point, any gain in terminal performance is outweighed by our relatively poor shooting with the higher recoiling system.

I think you’re click baiting. I am not going to lecture about seeing your bullets hit the target because you hunt at close distances.😂. Have a good Holiday season. I can’t resist. Just because I can shoot a heavy kicking gun ( which I can) doesn’t mean I should.

Why are you so concerned about having equivalent energy between the bullet weights? Who cares? Energy doesn’t kill anyway

It was actually a joke about your statement “ don’t be dumb, get a 26” barrel” lol! Truth be told I agree with Randy Shelby that the 338 win mag is the way to go. Nice video!

How much horsepower do you really need to harvest elk size game, i see a 300 win not have a problem...so why burn a extra pound of powder 😂😂😂😅
@ReloadingWeatherbyАй бұрын
I'm burning about 5 gr more of powder than a 300 Win mag

🧐 Roughly 20 years Ago Their Was a Scientific Paper Published (I Will Try and Find It For You) On The Terminal Performance of Hunting Bullets in Every Caliber and Their Ideal Maximum Expansion Range! While I Don't Remember The Exact Bullet Declaired The Winner, It Was The 338's 225 grain Bullet That Was Declared The Winner! Do I Think It is Overkill For Most North American Game? Absolutely! But, If You Need It, It Will Certainly Work Very Well! 🤑
