In this video I compare two completely different cartridges to each other. One is a fire breathing dragon while the other is a smart sophisticated magnum. Which one is a better hunting cartridge? Come find out in this video!

Great comparison. I have been contemplating the 257 for quite some time. Recently moved to Wyoming and have come to the realization that my "old faithful" 6mm Rem isn't quite up to the longer-range shots and wind here in the high desert. Several hunting buddies of mine swear by the 6.5PRC and have been very successful using it on deer, elk, antelope, coyotes etc. I already hunt elk with my 340 Weatherby and have had great success at shots out to 450-500yds. I think the 257 will be perfect for whitetail, mule deer, antelope and smaller game. Hope to own one soon!!

I don't own either of these cartridges. I would choose the 6.5 prc if I had to choose. The larger bullet at good velocities are more attractive to me. The ammo price up here in Canada is double for Weatherby over almost everything else. I doubt I will own either as I have a 25 06 and a 270 ,7mm08 . These cartridges will do all that I want at the distances I hunt.

I have both.I wouldn't say 6.5prc ammo is cheap either. I'd say the 257 is superior for a 500yd cartridge, while the 6.5prc is better for long range shooting, although a custom 257wby with a tighter twist custom barrel with the heavy bullets, would probably be awesome for long range shooting.

You’ll see faster twist rates come out for older cartridges for sure in the future. I suggested that to Weatherby already. I’m sure they thought of it long before I suggested it but, customer input never hurts. You won’t see gain twist barrels though. To my knowledge, only the Italian 6.5mm Carcano military rifles had a gain twist barrels.

@ Thor Shot placement and bullet construction are part of terminal ballistics. B.C is external ballistics. It doesn’t matter what your bullet does to the target if you miss. Before the solid copper bullets came out the lead core bullets were not as long. That is why shooters referred to heavier bullets. Now that the Solid Copper Bullets are out, Copper is lighter than Lead so The Solid Copper Bullets have to be longer to get the weight in each Caliber. That is where the faster twist comes in. I have a Browning 26 Nosler that I am running 120 Grain Barnes LR/ME at an average velocity at 3521FPS. I have shot only two groups with it. I let the first group cool between shots and it was 3/4. The second group I shot consecutive and it shot .362 for 3 shots.

One very important thing to mention is you’re having to shoot non toxic bullets, the 257 will definitely ensure better expansion/killing power with the higher velocity. Out to a certain distance anyways. This is exactly why I’m chambering a custom Sporter in 257wby with going to use a 80grain ttsx. For locations where I can use whatever bullet I want, I’ll be sticking with the partition. Not many people even look at the partition anymore. The expansion is excellent across all velocity ranges. Just my two cents.

Both good for most hunting. If I was only shooting a box of ammo every 5 years the 257 would be a good choice but if I wanted to shoot a lot and try long distance targets the PRC would be my choice. I bought the creedmoor before I heard of the prc and I have been really pleased with it. It’s not too expensive and very little recoil makes it fun to shoot. Probably doesn’t hammer game as hard as either of those cartridges. If you’re looking for top velocities Weatherby is your gun.

I’ve been intrigued with the 6.5 prc, it looks great on paper but I have a WBY accumark in 257 which has a 26” barrel and it’s a hammer! My personal favourite load is a Barnes 100gr TTSX backed by H 1000 in Norma brass which is yielding 3800fps (no pressure signs) and printing sub MOA groups. I’ve taken deer at extended ranges and it hits very hard with superb results. Only real difference between the two is if you are wanting to target shoot at extreme ranges, then the 6.5 PRC has an advantage. Cheers.

Interesting. Given the choice I'll stick with my 257 Weatherby. I'm curious how the 6.5 PRC stacks up some of the other 6.5 cartridges. Mainly how does it stack up against the old 264 Win and 6.5X284. Those two are pretty much gone from the landscape of a crowded 264/6.5 field. Unfortunately the 264/6.5 field is crowded enough that many of the new ones and nearly all of the older ones won't survive.

The 6.5-284 is alive and well in my little world. I have 2 and nearly 600 new Lapua brass along with another 400 Norma brass. I did get a 6.5PRC and 200 new Lapua brass for it as well but the factory ammo is shooting so well, no need to handload yet. Not sure which way I'm going with my other 6.5 barrels I have on hand but I'm leaning 6.5-284 Norma. Frankly, it's less overbore than the PRC and kills everything I hunt with it. Of all the rifles/calibers I own and have owned I'd keep 4 and IN THIS ORDER: 270 Winchester, 6.5-284 Norma, 7PRC, 300WSM

For 35 years I've looked off and on at various Weatherby rifles and calibers. Ultimately I've never gone down the Weatherby road because their rifles were priced higher than I wanted to spend at the time and looking at their ammo prices put me into Afib, made my knees buckle, and a stroke waiting to happen all at once - beyond ridiculous. A friend let me shoot his very expensive 300 Weatherby magnum with factory Weatherby ammo. I was expecting impressive range results and I got them. Impressive in a very negative way. The accuracy was non-existent - nice big 3 inch groups at 100 yards. I let him shoot my 300RUM. He wanted to trade. Regarding the 257 Weatherby, I remember something like a 25 caliber "scramjet?" And, the Lazzeroni calibers, etc. These caliber throats can't last long. I did get a 6.5PRC - a BadRock rifle. It's a lot of fun to shoot and factory Nosler Btip ammo was only $42/box. Hornady ELD-X ammo was same price. I have 4 more 6.5mm pre-turned barrel blanks to put a few more together or add another 6.5-284 to the collection

the best of the original hot rods, the top dog of the bean fields vs maybe the best ultra modern long range hunting chambering. Weatherby's have a rep for shooting great out of the box, the PRC are pushing new boundaries of what accuracy is possible in a rack rifle. they both carry plenty of energy down range. one beats the wind and drop with shear speed, the with sleek sexy bullets. ive got to go with the 6.5 for me. and its because excessive meat damage bullets going over 3000 fps cause to deer. which the weatherby in particular has a reputation for. and on the same stalk i can see deer at 30-300 yards. the weatherby is just too hot for my hunting! you should stuff some of those weatherby cases with Trail Boss and see what they do for speed and energy. might turn the .257 or .300 into great woods deer rounds. i know i know, its not what they were meant for, but it would be interesting to see the results.

You could compare the eld-x in .257 to the .264, a 110gr to 143gr. Hornady lists 3240 for the Wby and 2960 for the PRC. At 400 Wby drops 16.1 and PRC 18.2, PRC wins by 300+ in fpe, 1800/1448. An animal likely won't know which hit it at that range and will die all the same . My take: If you got 'em, smoke 'em.

I wonder what the results would look like with a compressed charge using the 135 VLD Berger. Clearly, there would be reduction in velocity due to the increase of at least 25 grains of projectile and the corresponding powder loss. What would the accuracy look like with your standard 1/9-1/10 twist barrel? Be interesting to see! How about either a 6.5 or 7mm PRC necked down to .257? Blow the shoulder out to 40 degrees?

The prc seems to me to be a better version of the 270. Same speeds with the same weight bullets, better bc, better sectional density. I think the 257 is hindered by some bullets. They're fast sure, but to be honest the distances where that speed actually helps (300+yds) you're probably better off with the prc anyways. Maybe a little bit more drop but the further you go the less the difference is. If I was gonna shoot a 25 cal it would be a 257 roberts improved shooting the 110gr badlands bulldozer.

I really think differently about “overbore” cartridges now. If your hunting and can handle the recoil is it really a big deal to only get a 1000 rounds out of a barrel? In my opinion that’s likely a lifetime of hunting even if that’s your only gun. I can’t wait to get out and use my 257.
@smashlee6181
@smashlee6181 Жыл бұрын
you also need to consider the efficiency loss with overbore cartridges (how much of the energy in the powder is transferred to the projectile). the 257 burns more powder than the 338 WBY RPM even though the 338 kills it in performance.

My grandson just bought his first gun. I told him to get the 6.5 prc which he did. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to shoot. After your 400 yard example the Weatherby falls on its face. We practice out to 1000 yards so the 500 yard shot seems easy. We shoot a lot. I have 1500 rounds through my 6.5 prc. I would never tell a new shooter to get a Weatherby unless his dad was a Weatherby fanboy then I’d say knock yourself out. Good comparison though.

Not a very good comparison, match the calibers, hands down 257 WM dominates the 25 caliber world and has for 80+ years. It has a 300 zero when set up correctly and only drops 8” @ 400 yards. My other concern is you want to revere the 6.5 prc, do a comparison against the 6.5-300 Weatherby Mag it tears the prc a new ass on every level. Keep in mind kids if you’re worried about efficiency then you should get a new hobby. Performance cost period, quit trying to re-invent the wheel. Finally don’t cry about recoil. #WeatherbyAllDayLong

1st of all this is not accurate. 2nd if you know anything about Weatherby rifles, you’ll know they all have 300 yd zero. The 257 is the flatter shooting with 8” of drop at 400. If you want a level playing field do your comparison, 6.5 prc against the 6.5-300 WBY, the flattest shooting cartridge developed. As for hunting goes anyone that shoots out past 400 yds is not an ethical hunter. Your prc and bleedmores can barely mushroom bullets at those ranges and you say can the 257 keep up with the 6.5prc? Throw efficiency out the window, you want performance? Well it comes at a premium. The prc is a glorified big brother to a 243 win. Weatherby’s are a class of their own and the popularity of the prc and bleedmores are kids starter rifles. Take a look at big game hunters on a professional level nobody is using these weak cartridges that barely fly at supersonic speeds.
