It was BECAUSE for the love of my body and my health that I decided to lose weight. One of the best things I've done. I couldn't stand being fat. It was a horrible way of living. I just felt horrible all the time. For fear of diabetes and other health concerns I decided it was time to do something about it. I started eating healthy and actually moved around a bit. After that I started working out.

Heres how you balance it: Love yourself enough to realize if you are overweight you are not loving yourself. Your body is most happy and most capable when you exercise and put it through tough challenges. Using "body positivity" as an excuse to stay overweight is ruining society and creating a complacent victim mindset. Be positive about your body and understand you are capable of anything, but being positive that everything is fins as it is would be just a flat out lie. Otherwise, we wouldn't be having this comparison as a Ted talk today.

You need to eat healthily, in accordance with your caloric expenditure and physical activity. Cut out added sugars and saturated fats… Drink only water. I do have a friend, by the way, who weighs 180kg and only eats one meal a day. He’s vegan and mostly eats salads, but he spends his days snacking, so he gains weight. Also, water retention: you need to drink between 2 and 3 liters a day. No more. Avoid salt. Eating healthy and maintaining a healthy body is complex and time-consuming. Excellent video, and finally somebody who is overweight, but understands the problems and doesn't try to promote that it is ok - let alone preferable. While overweight people have been treated awfully by society (and, I'm afraid, still are), swinging the pendulum to the other extreme and actually promoting being overweight is equally awful. If an overweight person is fine with their body, as long as they are aware of the dozens of health problems that come with that, it's their business. But an overweight person who wants to get healthier should be encouraged by everyone. And, yes, you are absolutely right, you can love yourself and still want to be better. Loving oneself doesn't mean stagnation

Yes! Preach it, girl! Self-love means doing things that are healthy for you, AND loving the body you currently inhabit because it has gotten you this far. I can appreciate the reasons for my obesity & accept that there are barriers to losing weight, AND I can eat healthy meals and exercise to the extent that my body allows me to on a daily basis. And yes, absolutely, seemingly opposite things can be true at the same time. That's actually the crux of the therapy I'm in: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Well, there is a differance between fat shaming and being concious of health. Same is true about body positivity and and disregard for negative impact of obisity or leanness on health. There ar too sides to that discussion. One is about how the image of the body is concieved in society and the other is a bout pure medical analysis. Leanness and obesity are not good for the body and are associates with heart, stamina or mobility issues. No matter how society is thinking about that this fact stays. (In fact it is easier to die of obisity nowadays than of starvation) So everything that is said here about health issues has nothing to do with the discussion at all. Body positivity is a sociatal thing and not a mediacal thing. So why are we still mixing this?

I used to hate it when fat idols would lose weight. I felt betrayed and that I wasted my time and money on idols that were no longer "one of us". I had spent decades as a child and adult not seeing plus size people in the mainstream. I mean the false symbol of a fat singer dying from a sandwich didn't help. Our media plays a BIG part in how we perceive ourselves, its TOXIC. I realized that as Mrs. Lascano points out you can love your body and be body positive. I have beautiful memories of traveling and walking on the beach and knowing that it wasn't my size that attracted my partners but who I am as a person. it has always been my choice to be positive about myself no matter what my size, and those idols . . . I know they are loving themselves too.

I’m glad she recognizes the harm it puts on the body. Good luck in your endeavors. Respectively I hope she can get to her best self mentally and physically. 🙏

This is true, AND it's important to avoid shaming people for their obesity. There are so many factors that go into it beyond diet & exercise (like thyroid issues, chronic pain, a history of childhood trauma, etc.). Also, even once you are doing all the right things, our bodies are designed to maintain whatever weight we carry, and losing weight (and keeping it off) has been scientifically shown to be extremely difficult. The point of this video is to balance acceptance of people (including ourselves) for who & how they/we are, while also encouraging healthy behaviors. BOTH are important.

Who would have thought. 4:18 right, the self-proclaimed community accepting of all body types, that turns its back on people who actually want to improve themselves. 5:14 gotta tread carefully, as you know, fear of cancelation defines a "positivity community of acceptance". She's right about some things though, all people should be treated with respect if they take meaningful strides to improve themselves, the cult of body positivity is destructive, and that being skinny does not equal being happy, but that's a straw man argument. People are healthy for the simple fact that it's a beneficial trait to have, therefore it only aids the happiness that people can have in general.

Diet is the biggest part of this for me I was diagnosed with prediabetes and diet alone does so much. I went from 270 to 212. For reference, back in the day when i was younger i was 230 but had very low body fat (single digit). I started eating poorly as i got older. Its so hard to out exercise a bad diet. Look at what you put into your body. Stop eating in the meal sooner. Dont wait until you are stuffed or when the plate is clean. I hope this helps someone else. Everybody is different but somebody might need to hear that its not always about just sweating on a treadmill. In my experience diet is harder than exercise. It tastes good and even the good stuff has bad things in it that make you fat. Hang in there yall

Being healthy in 5 steps: 1) Stop making excuses. Being overweight is nobody’s fault but your own if you are an adult. DECIDE you WILL own your health. DECIDE you WILL do what it takes to get healthy. 2) Exercise for flexibility, strength and endurance. 30-120 minutes a day, 6-7 days a week. You should be sweaty, tired, and out of breath. Maybe a very little bit sore the next day. 3) Drink lots of water and eat non-processed foods that total less calories than you burn. Can’t control your cravings? Go on a walk/run/bike/swim for a couple hours. 4) Go to bed on time. Wake up on time. Get plenty of great rest. 7-9 hours a day, every day. 5) have and track daily calorie intake and exercise goals. Have and track daily weight loss goals. Weigh yourself at the exact same time every day. Celebrate every pound you lose. Be proud of yourself for working so hard and taking ownership of your health. I’m rooting for you!!! You can do this!!!

I stopped believing that the body positivity movement was actually about body positivity when the community around it harassed and abused and excluded anyone who struggled with underweight issues. No one seems to care if you're underweight and struggle with keeping it up. No one threatens to take away your freedom and force you into a hospital if you gain 5lbs here or there. But if you're underweight and accidentally lose 5lbs, you get threats and shamed left and right by everyone because they all think you're unfit to take care of yourself. They threaten to force feed you, involuntarily commit you to psych wards and criticize you for making everyone else feel bad and being a toxic body image. When all you needed was some encouragement and be offered a favorite meal. The exclusion of people like myself who have struggled with low weight their entire life is why I cant believe the body positivity movement was anything more than just excuses to demoralize others.
