Have you ever wondered what would happen if you put a VHD into a CED player? Would it work? I mean, both are capacitance electronic discs? JVC and RCA were pals on video discs right? Let's see what happens in this video when we try it.

Great experiment! I was wondering if anything would happen. I know vhd spins slower then ced but still cool to know that they are definitely encoded different

I could make a very long and drawn out reply as to why this would not and could not ever work, but instead I will mention this; the two formats are mutually incompatible and that means there is a zero percent chance either one will work in the other.

Watch it spin there at the end really is like, wow! Look at that flutter.

I'd like to see a betamax tape spooled into a vhs housing and played in a vcr and vice versa

I've only tried it with Beta in VHS. The audio was picked up by the VHS with lots of background interference and too fast. But no video signal at all. :)

Different speeds between the two machines so it won’t work like you are hoping. I tried this many years ago as well. As another reviewer replied- audio sounds very sped up and no picture

That's been done before, but VHS in Beta would be interesting...
@PurpleMetal75

@@pablorai769 I don't think it would fit, since those VHS tapes were wider than beta tapes. That's one of the reasons VHS could hold 2 hours of tape.
@pablorai769
@pablorai769 Жыл бұрын
@@PurpleMetal75 Width was the same, half-inch, Beta I was faster, that's why VHS had greater duration and Sony had to introduce Beta II. I've seen Beta II tape respooled into a VHS housing (you get some spedup sound but no video), but not vice versa.

I'm sure the signal on the discs is completely different for a start. The CED player is expecting to see a compatible signal from the disc. Which of course is not there with a VHD disc, resulting in a blank screen.

This is a fun idea, no matter what the outcome is. Next I"d love to see what happens if you try to play a CED in a VHD player... 😀

It wouldn't fit. A CED is 12in, and a VHD is smaller at 10in.

@@pablorai769 I'm sure it would give exactly the same results, a blank screen. The thing is CED and VHD are very different, not only would the recorded signals be incompatible. CED uses a spiral groove that the stylus follows, just like a record. VHD uses concentric ring grooves and the stylus is tracked electronically. In fact they're so different JVC didn't need to pay any patent royalties to RCA. BTW Technology Connections on YT did a very in-depth series about CED, and how VHD came about, that's well worth watching.

That was interesting but I felt that the intro video was far too drawn out. Almost painful to watch as it was such a short video. And I should have corrected myself I was referring to the intro in the premier aka the countdown

I need to find a cheap source for cartridges just got a CED player and it spins the discs up nicely and puts the stylus down properly but I get nothing at all I’ve tried different discs with the same results it outputs rf signal but the led display never puts a number up it’s an early rca player I’d love to get it working looks brand new almost like it never played any discs if I had a known working stylus I could see if that’s the problem or if there’s another fault with the player

Plenty of later laserdisc player models play audio CD, so there's no point to such an experiment. CD-ROM would be interesting, see which players may or may not automatically mute the data "audio" signal.

@@inuliger I'm curious if it would sound like data noise like when I try to play weird audio formats from Playstation 2 games in MFAudio. Sometimes the sound that comes out is a loud screeching noise and it's not music and if I get lucky it sounds like garbled music. Just need to get the settings right.

There is no way it could have worked, and the only outcome is a damaged VHD disk: CED has grooves to drive the stylus like a conventional record while in VHD the stylus is electronically locked to the signal spiral more like a CD. It is like playing a 33 rpm disc into an old 78 rpm mechanical turntable
@databits
@databits Жыл бұрын
VHD disc was not damaged. The tracking force from the stylus is not enough to scratch anything.
