@ArmchairViolence3 жыл бұрын
@RAWSNL While it can be dangerous, using it safely isn't all that difficult. It just takes a few adjustments and a little bit of caution. Most people shouldn't do it in their first week, but I hardly think that anyone would need to wait until black belt to learn it. Anyone that can't practice basic safety probably shouldn't even be promoted past white belt lol. (That's SLIGHT hyperbole, but you get the point)

@@Matt90Nine I would say that tani-otoshi probably lands you in a BETTER position but it doesn't look as cool, so it's USELESS! 😂 Alright, now I'm actually thinking of putting out a video on how to do the scissor sweep better. Because there are a few details that make it a lot safer and, apparently, no one knows them. Wait, are people taught to do this move WITHOUT first getting good control of their opponent?!? No wonder this move is viewed as dangerous! That's like teaching people to fire a gun without aiming!

@christophervelez15613 жыл бұрын
@@neildutoit5177 I think the crux of what he is getting at is your workout isn’t going to be as good going with someone unskilled. When I work with new white belts it’s a slow process and when we roll it’s not as technical, fun, or even a good workout. But it is important for me to work with those white belts to help them out.

@@haydenford9587 Yeah. I know Jake is a very talented grappler in Mike's own words and no doubt confident in his abilities to pull that off, but there's a reason that technique is banned in multiple competitive rulesets. I'd hesitate to use that in friendly sparring, much less in a shits-and-giggles demonstration. I can't say that it wasn't fucking cool as hell, though. As an outsider looking in it's not really my place to judge and I'll readily give Jake the benefit of the doubt and assume he knew what he was doing in going for that, but man it makes me incredibly nervous seeing it.

I’ve done karate for 20+ years. It was almost entirely focused on self defense, and we had sparring, but the sparring was essentially just sloppy MMA. Eventually started an MMA class where I trained (my only actual fighter went 2-1). Fast forward roughly a decade and I’m doing hospital security and protecting myself and others an average of once per shift and engaging in physical conflicts with people trying to be violent at some level….do you know what training prepared me most for those situations? My ‘combat sport’ training. The ‘self defense’ training at least from the physical side was shit at preparing me for real world violence, and it was what seemed to be very common type of training for ‘self defense’ in karate at least based on what I saw…. So moral of the story I guess self defense training is more mindset than physical, and you can substitute any physical training in and out of the self defense mindset and be successful.

Mike, I have a question that's not really much related to this video, but I hope you will read this comment. How do I *mentally* prepare myself for violence? I'm a guy that has some experience with boxing and BJJ and currently I'm not even that small at 78 kgs. My BJJ and boxing classes didn't change shit in terms of how I *mentally* react to violence. Even though I would probably beat the shit out of average Joe, my mind goes back to feeling like a little scared girl... hell, even when a drunk angry guy is screaming on the street. Well, maybe that was a slight exaggeration. I suspect this problem has something to do with my past issues, childhood and mental background and I don't expect you to turn into a psychotherapist for me. But since you know your shit about violence and self defense and you even used to be a police officer, you actually seem like one of the most competent people to ask this question. Don't you think it's an excellent idea for a topic of s video? ;)
@uuh4yj433 жыл бұрын
i know u didnt ask ME but if u arent confortable hurting someone, or being hurt yourself, then do not engage in violence, this is your conscience preventing u from doing something u will regret. If i really need to resort to it, it will be your last last last resort, which is a good thing imo.
