I've trained both, muaythai and ground grappling. Being a Thai, it was natural that I started with muaythai. Initially, I started with both ancient muaythai and sport muaythai. After only about 10 days, I really wanted to drop ancient muaythai, but hung on because I paid a full month tuition fee. What a waste of time and money. I started muaythai at Fairtex Bangplee at the age of 57, so physically, I wasn't up to rigour of training sport muaythai. Fortunately, I was taken care of by legendary Abhidej Sithirun and later by Nuengsiam Fairtex, aka the Rock. I trained at Fairtex for > 17 years, and moved camp to Sangmorakot Gym because of Covid 19. BJJ is not convenient to train in Thailand. Muaythai camps are available in tons. Nevertheless, Fairtex had an MMA competitor, who was kind enough to teach me one on one. I only trained once a week for about four months. Mainly to know how grappler would trap and take down adversary and several locks etc. I've already trained muaythai clinching, and am quite confident in taking care of myself. Here is yours truly doing muaythai padwork. Please bear in mind that I was 76++ years old when this clip was made. Also I'm not sport gifted, and never represent my high school sport team, A typical desk jockey you may say. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqeQp5WMZ5qGebM

I"m not sure what your personal schedule is or the schedule of your gym, but for me, and many of my students. We do multiple classes a day. I used to do three hours days. 1 hour Strength and Conditioning, 1 hour Muay Thai, and 1 hour BJJ or Nogi. Many of my student do two hour nights and squeeze their lifting in on other days or time slots. You'll have to play around with it all and see what works best for your personal schedule. I hope that helps.

Great video. This was how I found your channel, actually. I've always been a striker at heart, but I do have a good body and mind for grappling. I enjoy JJ and wrestling very much. In fact, my most recent plan (which I decided to abandon - more on that later) was to do striking, wrestling, and JJ/Judo as a kind of holy trinity. Well, things changed. I realized that I would HAVE to devote about 1/3 of my total training time to each of those, and end up a jack of all trades, master of none. At this point, I have been focusing on my grappling for about a year, and started to edge closer to an "average blue belt" level, and learning fundamental wrestling skills as well. However, I've decided to focus on competitive Muay Thai - my favorite art and sport - because I've always wanted to fight in a ring. I had been preparing for MMA prior to that - which was why I got into grappling in the first place - but then realized that I didn't actually enjoy MMA all that much. At least, not before I got the love for pure striking out of my system. With about a 97% focus on just striking and only grappling on the odd day out, my Muay Thai skills are improving rapidly. There's not doubt that my grappling is probably stagnating, if not even deteriorating. I've made my peace with that, and have no regrets. Whatever we choose, there are sacrifices to be made. Firas Zahabi talks about doing Muay Thai and BJJ concurrently, and putting in 200% of the work as everyone else doing a single discipline. However, this would be impossible if we consider what ELITE athletes in dedicated, singular sports are putting in - they're training multiple times a day, in a SINGLE art - the equivalent of Firas's 200%. So, in reality, there is no 200%. We have finite energy, time, and recovery. Even if you're a MMA savage, and putting in 5 hour training days, 6 days a week for striking and grappling, there will be strikers doing 5 hours a day of pure striking, and grapplers doing 8 hours a day of pure grappling. Meaning that you will NEVER be as skilled in those areas as the people who specialize. But, does that matter? It really shouldn't if your goals and intentions are clear to yourself. If they're not, you need to meditate upon your life and just what you want out of it. What do you love? Until there is crystal clarity, you might end up experimenting. But once you find your target... laser-focus on that, whatever it is, and fucking go for it! Work towards your passions and what the heart desires. And when the desire changes, you can change, too. Nothing is set in stone, and nothing is permanent.

Hey Krufessor. I am considering trying these two sports. However, I am worried about cauliflower ear, specifically from BJJ. I notice that most people who've done it for a while have them. I've read that head gear helps, but almost no one uses them. Do you use head gear?
@Krufessor_Rad
@Krufessor_Rad 2 жыл бұрын
Cauliflower ear is a lingering factor, but it's not guaranteed on either end. No guarantee it will happen and no guarantee it won't. I've been grappling for over 12 years and I do not have it. I know so many team mates and black belts who don't have it either. But I have a white belt who just got it recently during a hard roll, so I think it may depend on the person and how their body reacts to the friction and other factors. I currently roll with a headgear and I do fine with it. I do it because I must wear goggles because I have prosthetics in both my eyes. Another story for another time. If I didn't have to wear the goggles I wouldn't wear it, but if it makes you feel safer and you truly are afraid of the potential of cauliflower ear, than wear it and don't care what anyone else is doing or saying about it. If you want to do it, do it! and fall in love with it, it truly can be life changing for so many people.

Will some techniques in Muay Thai help my skills in doing sweeps?
@Krufessor_Rad
@Krufessor_Rad 7 ай бұрын
Not necessarily and not directly. Sweeps are crucial in BJJ and really dialing in the technique and rolling to learn how to manipulate a persons weight and when to do it is crucial. But clinching can help with the learning to move people around a bit. But it’s different on the mats. When seeking improvement in a particular move or set of moves in a martial art, training that move in that style is the only true way to improve in it.

traditionally, there are no knees, elbows, or clinching in kickboxing. Some promotions allow knees and even a one handed clinch, but that's by promotion. Muay Thai uses all 8 points of contact and clinches and sweeps. I train and teach muay thai because I'd rather know how to use all my weapons in striking and be okay if I have to limit myself to a couple instead of only knowing how to use a couple when I may need to use them all. @Krufessor_Rad 9 ай бұрын
Training costs, unfortunately, and if you want good training with great coaches you will just have to pay the price when you can. It's like anything else in that way. If you want something you have to pay for it, and you get what your pay for in many places. Being "self-taught" is not a thing when it comes to these martial arts. You can learn some things online to maybe get a workout in, but true technique and learning requires decent coaches and knowledgeable training partners. If you truly want to get into it you may have to wait until you can handle the financial part of it.

Do you think it's possible for someone to train 2 martial arts when you're super busy with a family
@Krufessor_Rad
@Krufessor_Rad 2 жыл бұрын
I do. I did it for 8 years before quitting my career a few years ago. Find a gym that has a schedule that works for you and has both styles in house so you only have to go to one place. Then organize and make the time for yourself.

@@Krufessor_Rad Thanks for the reply. I'm training in BJJ because the club is 5 mins from my work and fits my lunchtime break perfectly. But what I really want to do is Muay Thai. There's another club 10 mins from home that train at night. I want to go twice a week to both, but I worry I won't make meaningful progress in either and perhaps should dedicate 3 x a week to one. I'm busy with young kids, business, etc. and don't have time to train as much as I did when I was younger. But, my main reason is fitness and fun. I think the combo would be pretty badass too
@Krufessor_Rad
@Krufessor_Rad 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kinjo7 yeah, the combo is pretty awesome. You don't have a particular timeline so just train as much as you can were you can and don't worry about the speed of progress. Take it all in bite by bite. You have time to become great at both if you so choose. some people stick to one for a bit so they feel pretty good before becoming a beginner in the other. That's another option. I say balance however you can and in a way that works for you as to not bring imbalance to your life. I hope you can find a way and I wish you luck on your journey.

Imo, this is backwards. Chances are your strikes aren’t going to do enough damage, and then you’re on the ground where you actually have high percentage submission options. Especially against an untrained opponent. Submitting someone on the ground is way easier than knocking them out on their feet.
@OhYaSure

And let’s be real, most people don’t have knock out power, even if you can connect. You don’t need power to choke or break someone’s arm

@@OhYaSure You actually do need power to break someones. Thats why even un wrestling or BJJ or any grabbing competition, there are weight categories. @@OhYaSure Submitting is easier than steiking efficiently for sure and thats why fights do go down on a ground. However Bruce lee already proved that if you are a proficient striker, you absolutely dont have to take fights on the ground. Though this means anything goes.

BJJ . Muay Thai is great martial art , powerful and effective but... what will happen when someone grabs you and take you to the ground? Muay Thai will be useless. So BJJ is the superior art there , you will fell more comfortable and confident if you have some ground technique. And you can learn to punch and kick alone , shadow boxing and bag work . BJJ you will need a partner so I take BJJ.

Why do fear a BJJ guy mor than a Muy Thai guy? O would think on the street someone who could stand and use all eight limbs plus clinching and sweeping is more dangerous. I started in MMA. What ends up happening is all you train is "MMA" you get pieces of all of those things and end up mediocre at them all, but not truly skilled at any particular one. Unless you put more time into one of them specifically. Many fighters pinpoint a primary skill or skills they prefer or came into the training with and sharpen it and train it more often on the side keeping it sharper than their MMA training as a whole. If that makes sense. Like the MMA fighter who goes regularly to BJJ class, or does a lot of striking with their coach or many have a completely separate striking coach with a specific style. Boxing, Muay Thai, etc. MMA is not a martial art. It's a mixture of martial arts. Many fighters enjoy doing specific martial arts but if they wish to do MMA they must them train MMA to learn to blend them all together. That's my experience with it. Thank you for the comment. 🙏
