Veronica writes, “Hi Susan, could you discuss the best way to make an exclusive, 10-month friend with benefits into a boyfriend? He has been hurt badly so I think he is very scared to commit. But when we are together, everything feels right, and he seeks me out when he needs closeness, but I think it scares him; so I can feel him try to distance himself. Thanks so much, you are one of the best out there!”

It's a good point for all of us ladies to *realise* that our 'situationships' were actually real relationships and we're not going crazy and are unlovable! But I disagree that she should stay. Just for the woman's own self-respect, she has to go. She is pampering to all his needs and 'fears' but he clearly doesn't care about her, or he could give her the smallest scrap of care and assurance by labelling the relationship by this point. If he wants to have a physical and emotional connection with a woman then he needs to grow up and get over these 'fears', otherwise he'll just have to 'play' by himself. It's not like she's asking him to marry her! I just worry about all of the damage this sort of thing does to women's self-esteem, so think that if someone hasn't decided by about 2 months, then they should always walk. I know there can be exceptions but it's just not worth the emotional turmoil.
@Bethms123
@Bethms123 4 жыл бұрын
Well said. I love your point about "pampering" while not asking for the moon and stars. Sometimes, we don't even realize we are doing it. I pass no judgment on anyone who is being kind and loving. But these dynamics reach a point where they become so lopsided that the loving person burns out and then they have to recover from burnout *on top* of heartbreak. Speaking from experience, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Two months is too soon. The number of months may be different for different people. Men, just like women, are complex humans with many of the same experiences and fears as women. A man may not be able to open up to you emotionally in two months. For a lasting relationship he has to feel safe enough to open up to you emotionally.

I wasted 2.5 years (1.5 in the situationship ) on this bs. Guy is just non committed and playing the field. Low vibrations connection. Susan is correct 💯

There is no need to make moral judgements of him. She entered the relationship to be "friends with benefits" and she was satisfied. Eventually she developed feelings for him but maybe he hasn't. If that's the situation the best would be to finish it because the original contract is no longer there. There is nobody to blame. We can only learn from it that it is not good for our selves to connect too deep (sexually, emotionally) with somebody just for fun, boredom, lust or loneliness.

This is not looking good. If the guy is afraid and does not want a relationship from the beginning, it is what it is. He will say he is not ready for a serious relationship, then will make another excuse (can't move on from an ex, can't make future plans, let this "situationship" not a boundary for meeting other people, etc.) You will just have to make a decision if you want to stay in the "maybe" box or find someone who is not afraid of commitment (because you know you deserve better)
@DiamondsRexpensive
@DiamondsRexpensive 2 жыл бұрын
Short answer: No, don't waste your time with such things if you want someone serious. If he is scared and hurt, it is not your responsibility to fix it. Let his mom do her job which she didn't do so well to begin with

Just over a week ago, I told my now Ex that I love him. I say 'Ex' although it never felt like I could call him my boyfriend. He didn't like labels, was scared to commit etc etc. For the last 18 months, give or take a few, I have been so patient with him but for whatever reason, he didn't reciprocate (despite telling me in a drunken moment that he did love me). For one who normally has no issue with communication, I was struggling to keep my feelings under wraps for his sake! I don't regret telling him in fact, it was quite a relief. Thank you so much Susan for your insight and your clarity. I wish I'd found you before but I'm glad to say that your advice mirrored my action xx

Love you Susan! But I so disagree. She said that he seeks her out when he needs closeness. Sounds like he's using her for sex and validation. Being scared is a lie shes telling herself. She says it feels so right but he's not saying that. I wonder what would happen if she backed off, stopped sleeping with him and got busy with her own life and made herself unavailable.
@saludosalsol

Well you don’t know for sure, because I’m in the situation too and I’ve backed away and become unavailable many times and moved on with my life. He keeps chasing and coming back when I do that. I’m not going for him but he’ll always try anyways. I think he’s afraid to lose the connection too. Which is weird because you could really be hooking up with anyone. He said it’s special with me because we’re so “sexually compatible”.
@saludosalsol
@saludosalsol 4 жыл бұрын
@M M Yeah I think that's true. It's not as cold hearted as just a bootycall, like Susan said,, a friend with benefits is friends outside of the benefits. And we do have that. But that doesn't make it okay, because whether he's afraid of love or the responsibility of commitment (I do think that's a real fear), he would try to make it official if he thought I was the one. Either way it's a waste of time to put that energy into someone who's only gonna ever return it to you on a physical level & not deeper emotionally.

@@saludosalsol He is only chasing to get access to sleeping with you again, or to get the benefit of what he was getting out of you. Pull and walk away completely without giving him the benefit, and see what will happen. Don't just pull away for a moment, and then when he chase you again so to speak. That “with benefits” is so masochistic. Well because was a male that came up with that. A lot of guys do have a fear of a real relationship but want someone preferably a friend that would not turn it into a relationship but is willing to have sex with them when the sexual desire arises. So fear of a real relationship IS why that came up for many reasons fear of negative baggage a woman might have, fear of being played on, fear of getting deep into a relationship just to find out she’s the wrong one or she decided to cheat on him. And so whatever the fear reason behind it alot of guys do that because well many reasons for THEIR benefit hence the term “with benefits” aka they like the woman and want to hav sex but they 1) want it to be an open relationship to be free in case they find the right one they really want to be with 2) they do not want to settle down with anyone but wants to have sex with someone when the sexual urge arises until they ready to settle down. 3) they like the idea of not being hooked up but being able to have sex with their friend if they want and she allows it of course. In my opinion for me it’s not a good idea. There are many women that would like that too BUT in those cases ALWAYS ALWAYS one or the other get attached and one of them ends up getting hurt in the long run if they both in the long run don’t commit to having a real relationship

Oh my I have such a different take on relationship mentioned . I would be interested to know does he go out with her ? Has she met any friends or family on either side ? Or is it all behind closed doors and private . If so that’s so terribly unhealthy if you want more . I have seen friends with benefits become more but rarely . One partner usually wants more , to take it to the next level . I think if at any point you realise you want to be a legitimate couple and the other does not , you have to leave or there will be tears . I don’t think we should ever wait for anybody to commit to us ( not meaning actual marriage ) or try to force anybody . Friends with Benefits would only make me want love more , it would make me feel more empty . That’s just me of course .

This was very bad advice from Susan. This is an adult woman and she needs to take life as it is. This man is using her until something better comes along. The "no title" allows him to date and pursue other women without getting in trouble while still having sex with her. At this moment he is probably looking for better. The viewer should accept that she has disappointed herself and should do some self care. Would you want someone if you have to force a relationship?

But then I have another female in my life where her "guy" still calls her a lot, he calls more than he texts, but if he can't talk or is too tired to talk, he will have full text conversations with her. This one also does monetary stuff for her sometimes, she just hasn't met anyone for him, neither his kids, nor aunt's and uncles, nor parents overseas! What do you think? 🤔 I am trying to advise them. Do you think the 1st one is just a meaningless drawn out fling/hook up situation, and the other a more meaningful thing so a situationship? 👀🧐🤔

Problem is many men are not like you.and I think the more women that men sleep with the more difficult it becomes to stick with just one.Its not only how you feel with them, in bed . IT'S how you feel with them as a whole person outside of bed. Sex is only the , frosting on the cake when you have a good relationship. And any man who says he wants to date but nothing serious. Means he wants to go to bed with you, and when he's tired of you, he's still looking for something better. Some women are not stupid. Intimacy in bed lasts only a short while. But a true loving relationship keeps building day by day.

@@leeorsay2571 it takes two people to build a good foundation, for a loving relationship. Doesn't work if it's one-sided. It's not so much finding the right person it is being the right person.. Unfortunately a lot of people are not honest. Love is a decision not necessarily A feeling. To be with one person, and making their happiness come before yours. It's a dance a give and receive. I wish I knew then what I know now. I gave and gave and never received much. But once you have children it's not about you anymore. So people stay in lousy marriages, for the sake of the children. Once two people stop caring about each other. Being thoughtful, and doing loving things for each other. And there's a lack of respect. It starts going down the drain.

They certainly can if they care, are still attracted, want some action, and you haven’t screwed it up by being needy, desperate, or begging. The best course of action is to just disappear immediately, for an extended time, and let them wonder why you haven’t reached out. Let them come to you, maybe ping them after 30+ days or longer, if you must. They may only come back once for nostalgia and to feed their ego / desires. Likely if they’ve done it once, they’ll do it again. Therefore, at the very least, you are owed a sincere apology, and boundaries must be set before agreeing to anything.

I agree with the original commenter, as well as the other comments. Works for some, not for others. Personally, I don’t like the idea because someone is usually more invested and when it ends, they’re blindsided, it hurts, someone feels unworthy of continuation, and leaves them with a void. I wouldn’t want to feel like that, and have too much self respect to put someone else through it. If both parties truly are on the same page, it can work and end easily, I guess... but in my opinion, one person is confident in their head that they do not want a relationship and still have their eyes open while the other is open minded, but hopeful that they can win the other person over and it could become something more. Once it’s over, both parties regret not using that time to go out and meet a real partner, especially the one who was more invested and blind-sided.

Such great advice, so many people degrade a friends with benefits arrangement but at the end of the day, it’s between you and the other person and it has nothing to do with anybody else. It doesn’t have to be everything all at once, you can have an exclusive arrangement and a beautiful connection that may take time to get to where you really want it. I love the sympathetic grounded and optimistic way Susan handles these complex situations, just brilliant ☺️

I told my FWB I'm done and it was time for him to go find his girl and vice versa, his response after years was (ha ha ) I went into NC Immediately and now its been 4 months without a word from him. I do have to say I've learned the hard way but I did learn. One other big thing that I learned was what a dismissive avoidant is like and I now know all 4 of the Attachment styles. Next! And never again. Learn and turn is what I call this lesson ❤

Thank you so much Susan for your expert advice. I'm in the same boat with a guy whom I've been Fwb with for almost a year now. He's pursuing another girl (they're just getting to know each other according to him)but still constantly talks to me as if I'm his girlfriend. It's so confusing and frustrating

Friends with benefits doesn't exisist at all. The name is misleading. Be real: You are NO friends. You'r just using each other for sex in a superficial manner.. its sad! Because you'll NEVER be friends, let alone become lovers! Friends with benefits is just to consume each other for own purpose. No future, no depth, no progress, no nothing! Maybe it sounds smooth...'friends with 'benefits'... Real friends respect you. "Friends with benefits" are Pumpadumps! Of course they don't want to share anything else with you besites that.. Because they are far from a friend. These are just booty calls, wake up! You are no friends at all and not the only on the shelf to pump and dump = benefits...👭👭👭👭👭

Dear Susan, I love how you approach these topics! A 10-month friend isn't a boyfriend? The truth is they have a relationship because friendship doesn't involve sexual intercourse, and this is why I don't understand at all this new dynamics in dating. Reminds me of the video you did a long time ago when one called "why playing full out gets the love you want!". Friends with benefits might be "amazing" for casual whatever, but why not share our bodies, souls, and beliefs with someone who wants to be full in like us? Have a lovely week! 💖 Alexandra

Hi Susan... Thank you so much for this, once again what you say is making so much sense. Our connection seems to be like Veronica's situation. We have spoken before and you have given some advice, but this is so frustrating. It's been about 7 months and the 2nd time we've been here. I actually told him exactly this, that we are actually committed and that him saying he can't doesn't sit well with me. When we see each other it's a happy situation, but he has all sorts on the go including a group of friends who control his life... I seem to be a reprieve from them because I am not part of the click, I am special in my own right. He backed off when he realized we were getting too close, but still seeks me out, like Veronica's situation. I am so on the verge of telling him I'm done, yet I do think we have a chance. You always seem to share items that are so pertinent to me and my life. Once again, thank you for your incredible work.
