Oh it’s most definitely a real thing. In my experience it’s been the woman who’s initiated the idea. However it can go south when feelings rear their head, as they will do at some point. Women are emotional creatures and no matter how high her defences or her attitude to being just FWB it often comes to a point of pain. It goes two ways, they run because they develop feelings they thought they wouldn’t or they say they’ve changed their mind and want more. Just my two cents from my experiences from being in FWB situations.

attraction must be intense enough or isn't enough from the start: usually, this situation of "friends" means the attraction is not at the right level and turning it around may not be worth the effort, because the problem is that she's already got a frame in her mind (conscious and subconscious) of what it's about: "friends with benefits"= settling for less than, which is never the best situation... the man might think attraction can increase by changing his attitude, but the fact remains that she's got it figured out already (even if she doesn't know it, she already knows), sooner or later she's going to meet another man that she has no doubt about and who she won't ever consider just a "friend", and that's where her interest and priorities will shift... once an option, always an option... it's better to move on and find something genuine and right, because hanging around waiting isn't going to bring results, better understand the truth and move on, find someone who feels the feeling and doesn't have any doubts... unless, of course, you don't mind settling for less as well

Sigh. So I'm polyamorous. I had no intention of finding a serious secondary partner, just casual encounters and FWB. So that's what I agreed to with this new guy. I'd only spoken to him online because of lockdown until a couple of days ago when we met in person. We went over the whole FWB thing again just to be sure of what we were looking for. But he is really sweet and I find it *very* difficult to find people I am into, let alone someone who I feel is a match.
