Anytime you backwash, rinse it also. And you want to turn the multiport just one way. Clockwise. Going Clockwise then counter Clockwise will cause it to leak.

Walmart has a pool chlorine now, with much higher concentration of sodium hypochlorite (chlorine), so you don't need as much of it. You want a low pH for when you need to shock. (raise it when the algae is all gone) Alkalinity should be 50-60 ppm and it is to keep the pH from going up and down wildly - stabilizes the pH. As others have said, your CYA is absolutely crazy, and there is only one way to lower it: Drain a large portion of your water and refill. That should be your FIRST step! Once the CYA is around 50-60, you can determine how much chlorine you need. Otherwise, you're spinning your heels and adding more BBB than you need. First step is always to get your CYA under control - you're flying blind until that happens! But thank you for taking the time to make the video.

When things get out of hand I usually take a water sample down to my pool supply store and have my water tested. I then use my Taylor K-2005 test kit to confirm findings. I found this video somewhat helpful in the fact the guy didn't spend that much, maybe $50 and got a clearer pool. Draining and refilling costs more, especially with start up chemicals. One thing I noticed, if he dumped 2X the amount of store bought bleach as it's only 6% vs 11% chlorine from the pool store. Also test strips are not that accurate and I personally can't rely on them, especially the ones from Clorox with the app. One minute it says add PH Up and the 2nd test says add PH down. Also his cyanuric acid was very high, as poster chuckschilling mentioned. It's been my experience that CYA readings at 200 and above cause problems. It's basically an uphill battle if not addressed.

Good points you made....I used regular bleach because I waited too long to close my pool and could not get shock anywhere....You’re right, my CYA was way too high, but I didn’t want to drain and refill the pool at closing....The bleach did clear it to a better degree, but not totally.....I had to drain and refill at opening the next season....Thanks again for the tips!

My pool has had the same problem. The shade of green of your pool is wild! Maybe we have a different algae here in NJ. On the CYA level, did you by chance add a lot of stabilizer during the year? What a pain to keep everything balanced. Great video, man. If possible, get the big container of liquid chlorine from a pool store. It does the job fast. Good work.

Your pH was fine, but your cyanuric acid was off the chart. The reason your pool was green was because your cyanuric acid was so high it is binding all the chlorine up and making it completely ineffective. You need to drain and refill that pool.

I live in California. I only got algae once in the spring because we ran out of chorine. I never covered the pool. We had 8 boys they used it constantly so no time to cover it.....In California we used it from Mar - Nov. ....

@@pw1615 depending on the cover. But a cover that shuts out sunlight will not allow algae growth. I have an inground pool for the last 14years. This year with the automatic cover, I open and close it as I need and not once I had to deal with algae. Saves a lot of money and time in chemicals and cleaning! Saves money heating the pool because the water retains the heat better.

Assuming the strips were accurate (which most strips are NOT) the the issue was, as others have pointed out, the high CYA. And completely false assumptions about household bleach, Total Alkalinity being an issue, and a complete lack of understanding about pool chemistry. For the CYA, 30-50 max as the test strip container says. But, even 50 is pretty high. I keep my customers pools between 20-30. Chlorine tabs continually add CYA and IMO, should never or rarely be used. Household bleach is not strong enough to really 'shock'. because you would need such a high volume that the high pH (around 14) increases the pH of the water to a level where the chlorine is not effective. The higher your pH the less effective the chlorine is...at a pH of 8, the effectiveness is near 0. Adding the baking soda also increased your pH. The recommended chlorine level for algae kill is 30ppm. If you had been using 'pool' chlorine (12% chlorine instead of 3-5% found in household bleach) you would have needed 4.42 gallons of 12% chlorine bleach to raise chlorine level to 30ppm. I looked close to see if the bottles of bleach you used had a % on the label and did not see it. So, that generic bleach was probably 5% max chlorine and probably less. 7 bottles wouldn't have introduced even remotely enough. 1# of a 65% chlorine powdered shock is = about 80 ounces of 12% chlorine. @xiongfa2152 you just watched a video literally proving half of what you typed is incorrect, so kind of ironic to harp about "a complete lack of understanding". Worst assumption is 30 ppm chlorine for algae kill. No. That is the level for complete molecular destruction. Actual death happens much lower if you need it now, but also time is factor. Tons of evidence that complete kill is easily possible by maintaining 10-12ppm over a 2-3 day period. Next your assumption about 3-5% concentration for household bleach is rather silly considering the label clearly says "concentrated" and you could have easily Googled this brand before spouting nonsense. No one sells a "concentrated" bleach that low and this one is actually 7.5%. Also your CYA numbers are off, no one recommends 20 ppm like you (that's wasting your customer's chlorine) and no, 50 ppm is not "pretty high" considering many of the big pool supply houses recommend 30-100 ppm as a normal range. Bottom line: it worked and you said it can't.

One important thing with the dial on your filter base. Always, and I mean ALWAYS turn your valve CLOCKWISE when turning to a different setting. NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO. Always clockwise, never back it up, make a full circle if you have to. I learned the hard way.

If you move the valve one way, go back the other, then the other way again, it will rub a flat spot in the O-ring gasket and cause it to start leaking, or to blow out. If you move your valve from filter, to any other setting, always spin it clock wise, make a full circle and stop where you need it. Never back up. Always make a full circle.

Just pump the pool empty. Then refill it, you will complete the job the same day. Add a suction hose from your pool pump to the center of the pool. I emptied my 13000 gallon inground pool. Pressure washed it, then refilled it on Friday. Buy a small electric sump pump and wash the green algae to the pump's suction with a water hose. I never treat a green pool anymore. The cost of the water was maybe 30 bucks, and the pool looked new again.

good chlorine level is between 1.0 and 4.0 parts per million (ppm), while the pH should be between 7.2 and 7.8. A 5 ppm mix would be 8 drops per gallon.(0.55ml) 1 ppm equates to about 1.5 drops each gallon.(0.10 ml).

Your CYA level is at 300ppm according to your test strip. It should be 30-50ppm. At 300 you are in the dreaded Chlorine Lock, that's why the 7 gallons didn't kill everything overnight. Also baking soda raises the pH but does very little to TA. To raise your TA, you better use Bicarbonate.

You are correct about the CYA level being far too high (by a factor of 10! 😳), but you are wrong about the baking soda. Baking soda IS sodium bicarbonate - the proper chemical name is actually “sodium hydrogen carbonate”. It raises total alkalinity but does not affect pH all that much. Sodium carbonate (a.k.a. “soda ash”) does the opposite - it raises pH a LOT but doesn’t raise total alkalinity much. To raise pH, you only need a little sodium carbonate (probably well less than a pound) - whereas to raise TA you need a LOT more sodium bicarbonate (probably several pounds). As you said, the real problem here is that the CYA level in this pool is absurdly high, and it is locking up all of the chlorine. With a CYA level of 300 PPM, it would be very difficult to even put enough chlorine in the pool to have enough free chlorine to effectively kill that algae or sanitize the water properly.

Wow. Your Cyanuric Acid (cya - chlorine stabilizer - the last patch on your test strip) is super high. This makes chlorine at normal levels ineffective. To lower cya you need to drain water and replace with fresh water. Do you regularly use chlorine pucks? I suspect you do from seeing the floating dispenser. The pucks continually add CYA/Stabilizer. I had to drain half of my pool (20k gal) water and refill to get from a level of 150 to about 70. After I did that maintaining an algae free pool was easy. I stopped using pucks and switched to a 40lb bucket ($90cad) of granular chlorine (shock). The granular chlorine has safe handling considerations that need to be followed. I would toss about a cup into the pool every 2 days. For me it also raises ph after a while. I manage this with Muriatic Acid which also requires safe handling practices. Overall going away from pucks has given me a better and cheaper pool ownership experience.

Regular ol' bleach from Walmart, Dollar General, or wherever is much better for your pool's chemistry. The only thing I would suggest (from years, and years of experience), is to monitor your CYA level (cyanuric acid). For a non salt water pool, you want the levels between 30-50. Anything above 60, and it's going to take more sanitizer to keep your pool clean. The only way to lower CYA levels in a pool is to drain water out, and refill with fresh clean tap water. Test it after draining some, and drain more if needed.

@@LoveKrom21 the only accurate way to test cya is to do a liquid test from Taylor. Strips will show you a general range but with liquid you can dilute the test if it's over a 100 to know where you are at. Use only FRESH liquid chlorine that's under a month old or calcium based shock. Store bought bleach is usually under 5% depending on how long it's sat and can be loaded with additives.

I never did get my pool up and running this year it had to Much algae and I couldn’t get the chemicals right so I’m closing it now with a bunch of algae and leaves in it and might going to be able to get it all cleaned out next year to be able to open it up I planned on emptying it and refilling it next year but I’m just hoping that I can clean all the algae out of it in order to do that

When you open the pool next year you'll need to brush down the walls and floor of your liner to remove the algae.

Get some mr clean sponges - off brand- and put them in your skimmer or filter and run it for 1 full day. Then waste some water and use some algaecide by hth or this bleach method hes showing and run the filter again. Youll have to manually get the leaves out with a good leaf skimmer but over 3-5 days itll get clean!! Waiting another year will make it worse

Hi. I started your process about 36 hours ago. 7500 gallon pool. Put in 4 gallons bleach and 6 pounds baking soda. There is some improvement - water is blueish green (more green) so will continue to run the pump. Your last shot of the clear pool - after how many hours/days did that finally happen? Many thanks!

Super chlorinate and use a good algaecide. It'll be clear enough to see where you need to vaccum in about 8 hours. Brush and backwash every couple of hours. Then follow up with a phosphate remover and let you pump run for 24 hours. I did this yesterday and my pool went from almost black green to clear. I feel your pain. I've given up a thousand times.

probably too late, but, if you lower your ph a bit first then add the bleach, then use the baking soda it works like a charm. I only ever use chlorine and baking soda all season unless we get unusual weather, then I have to go with the bleach method

Dude I can’t even stomach how many things you didn’t do correctly. First you should’ve never added bleach that high up because it will splash. You need to brush the pool before you do a super chlorination. Next your page was actually 6.8. It looked to me to be at about 7.6. Bleach is a strong base. There’s no way in hell after adding 7 gallons that your pH was at 6.8. You should always check the pH and alkalinity of your pool before you add anything to the pool otherwise the chlorine that you’re adding is not nearly as effective. Don’t waste your money do it the right way!

Mariana Serly You should be able to find a packet of shock at your pool dealers. It usually costs 3 or 4 dollars. I dilute min in a bucket filled halfway with pool water. After the shock has dissolved, dump it around the pool as you walk around the outside of it. Keep the pump and filter running. The next day it should look cleaner or maybe a little cloudy. Change the filter, (or backwash if you have a sand filter), and keep it running. As the algae dies, it breaks down into microscopic bits. These bits can't be filtered because they are too small, so they pass through the filter and back into your pool. So after your pool is no longer green, you need to add flocculant, (sold at the pool store for like 8.00) What the flocculant does is it coats the dead algae with a polymer that makes it easier for the filter to catch it. What doesn't get trapped in the filter, goes to the bottom of the pool where you can simply vaccuum it up. It takes some patience and a lot of filter running, but don't let it get you down. Use 8.25% unscented bleach. One 121-128oz. bottle for every 10,000 gallons. Liquid shock is the same as bleach but higher % like 10-12% chlorine. Raise and lower ph Borax to raise Muriatic acid to lower use 16oz a time and check. To lower the pH, the most common liquid acid used is muriatic acid, also known as hydrochloric acid. To raise the pH, soda ash (sodium carbonate) is normally used. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) can be used to raise pH if the alkalinity is low, but it's more commonly used to raise alkalinity. Stay away from stabilized chlorine.

I wouldn't recommend doing anything the way he did. Pool store beans products are stronger and end up being cheaper than box stores. And it's pointless to do what he is doing with cya that high, if the test strips are anywhere accurate in it's reasons for his cya, test strips are incredibly inaccurate but that's still easy to high even if it's a wrong reading. Also you HAVE to rinse after backwash and backwash til the water comes out clear. Backwash multiple times a day til the pool is clear. He could have cleared this pool in half the time if he just got pool store products alone. And even more quicker if he had them test it as well

My pool has gone from grayish blue to green and now back to grayish blue over the past 3 weeks. My alkalinity is low and ph is low. it has been like this for 2 days. I have a 24 X 52" above ground pool with a sand filter. I have shocked it, put in ph up and alkalinity up and nothing has happened! I have no idea what to do next. I tested it again this morning and it everything is good except ph and alkalinity and stabilizer is low. Please help!

I had the same problem... I used Baking Soda (8 lb. bags) that I got at Wal-Mart. .. My pool is 27' x 52"... I used 20 lbs and the alkalinity was raised over the next 2 days which cleared up the pool... Hope this helps..Good luck!

I was in 3 months sad after I finally fin out how to deal with the problem turm all of Clean you filter after you clean put the refill for the filter I put 5lb. Because my pool is between 18 to 20 k gallons of water after dump 8 gallons of bleach and turn on the filter for 24 hrs at night do not put tablets during this just the bleach, at night I put one back os breakout total is Chlorinating shock only one next day in the morning I add 10 oz ALL-CLEAR Green Alagecide. Make sure you pump is working the right way. Remember do not put the tablets my pump is 2 horsespower. sorry my english. do what i say and you will be happy like me now I fix the ph with Borax. Lower your stabilizer first or nothing will work. Use only FRESH liquid chlorine or calcium based shock that doesn't contain stabilizer. That way you will only get stabilizer from tabs.

Borax is sodium tetraborate, it can be used to raise ph while having a minimal effect on total alkalinity.

You can't empty your pool for the winter and not refill it. The pool walls will collapse from the wind and the weight of the snow on the cover. If I left it as it was and waited for the next season my pool liner would have been stained.

household bleach is MUCH weaker in concentration than Chlorine you get from the pool store

@@kenmarlow690 yeah true. When I searched this online though, it is said that half a pound of Colorox will raise a 10k gallon pool by 5ppm. This is why I was shocked. His pool probably got to above 20ppm chlorine from those 7 gallons.
