The difference between Rank and Appointment is something that civilians or pre-service personnel often get confused about. A soldier could hold the rank of Warrant Officer or Master Warrant Officer, but she or he could hold the appointment of Company or Squadron Sergeant Major, Pipe Major, Bugle Major, or Drum Major, etc. in a regiment. Chief Warrant Officers aren't all Regimental Sergeant Majors. They could be Command Sergeant Majors or Base Sergeant Majors. An Honorary Colonel of a regiment is a ceremonial appointment not a substantive rank. It can be held by a civilian or someone who is actually a General. It is also important to highlight some more exceptions: - Sergeant is spelled Serjeant in rifle regiments or light infantry regiment - Privates in Foot Guards are called Guardsmen as the video says, but a private in the Horse Guards is still called a Trooper like the rest of the armoured corps - Corporal of Horse means a Sergeant in the Horse Guards - A Lance Sergeant is a Corporal in the Foot Guards - A Private in the Pipes and Drums Platoon is called Piper or Drummer - A Private in a Signals regiment is called Signaller - A Private in Fusilier regiments are called Fusilier - A Cornet is a 2nd Lieutenant in the Horse Guards - An Ensign or Subaltern means 2nd Lieutenant or Lieutenant in the Infantry - Privates in regimental bands are called Bandsmen or Drummers Other Interesting Facts: - Whereas all armies in the Commonwealth more or less share the same rank structure of the British Army, Master Corporal is a rank that exists only in Canada and not elsewhere in the Commonwealth. During the 1960s the Corporals training curriculum was revised into A Phase training and B Phase. Those who have passed the B Phase were unofficially called B Corporals and that subsequently became Master Corporal. The Lance Corporal rank was eliminated at the same time in Canada and that one stripe is now given to trained Privates to set them apart from Recruits. - A Brigadier is no longer considered an Officer in the General grade along with Major General and Lieutenant General in the British Army, it still is in the Canadian Army. - Lieutenant is pronounced as Lev-tenant in the Commonwealth and it's only in the US that they pronounce it as Lieu-tenant. This is because in old English the letter U and the letter V were often interchangeable because it was hard to carve the letter U in wooden block printing. - Corporals in the Foot Guards wear three white stripes on their arms and are called Lance Sergeants because Queen Victoria believed her Foot Guards were superior to other infantry of the line regiments and therefore in her view a Corporal in the Guards would be the equivalence of a sergeant in other regiments and hence she ordered that rank created. A real Sergeant in the Foot Guards would wear gold chevrons and hence they are also called Gold Sergeants. - Whereas a Private in Highland regiments are called Highlanders, Privates in Lowland or non-Highland Scots regiments aren't called Lowlanders. They are just Privates. - The rank Colour Sergeant or Staff Sergeant no longer exists in the Canadian Army but it still exists in the British Army and the Royal Marines. But the Sergeants in a Colour Party in parades could still be called Colour Sergeants in Canada.

It's also important to mention that NCOs and WOs, especially in combat units, are also the subject matter experts. They are highly experienced on their equipment and weapons, as well as tactics and SOPs. As such, they are the ones who maintain the unit's proficiency and professionalism, serve as mentors to junior officers and junior NCMs, maintain unit cohesion through the propagation of their corps' and units' histories and traditions, as well as enforcing dress and deportment. And, because I'm biased, the role of sergeant major in an armoured unit is way more involved and critical to combat operations than just standing by to serve as 2IC.

I have a question and an observation to make. In the 40+ years I was in the Canadian Army captain was a junior officer not a senior officer. Has that changed in the last few years? The observation is this: there has been much confusion of the use of the term NCM since it was brought into use. Some think it has replaced the term NCO when speaking about our ranks. That is not true. NCM simply means those personnel who are not commissioned officers. When speaking about our ranks it does not replace “Warrant Officers’, Senior NCOs, and Junior NCOs”. You can refer to CWOs, MWOs, WOs, AND Sergeants as Senior NCMs and rest of the non-commissioned members as Junior NCMs but you cannot use the term NCM was speaking of our rank system.

If you havent completed DP1 but you did BMQ you are considered Private Basic. Private Trained is the default designation of the single Chevron Rank.
@Benoit2623 жыл бұрын
Not always. If you have less than a year in you technically aren't eligible for your first hook. No hooks can be fully trained on basic and DP1. Just depends on training schedule. There's also weird circumstances where you have BMQ and DP1 but not BMQ-L and are stuck in a perpetual No Hook loop. Because of COVID I myself have been a DP1 qualified No Hook without BMQ-L for over a year... So my rank is Gunner, yet I'm not fully qualified. It sucks ass lol.

Hey, good video. Capt. is still considered as a junior officer rank, senior officers start at Major. Lt. and 2Lt. are subalterns. Also, when I was active, Sgt. was a senior NCO and belonged to that mess. Has this changed?

Hi, thank you for your content. I have a question regarding the officer career path I hope you can speak to. At what point does a PRes OCdt commission as a 2Lt? Is it upon graduating CAP/BMOQ-A/L? Or is it after completing their basic trade qualification/DP1?
@Benoit2623 жыл бұрын
In my experience a Commission to 2Lt usually comes after completing CAP. Then eligible for promotion to Lt once you complete DP1.1, at least that's how my Regiment has done it.

@@desmondmorgan3389 ok thanks, because England has that rank.

The reason I asked is because our regiment has that rank. We were formed by HM Foot Guards on 23rd July, 1962. Our regiment is from Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹, a country in the caribbean. I'm a retired infantry Staff Sergent. I retired July last year. My role and function was the issuing of kit to my company, as well as ensuring the barrack rooms are well equipped, and logistic duties at company level. What is the equivilent rank to Staff Sergeant? My rank is one below WO2 (the crown surrounded by wreaths).
@seanthompson91763 жыл бұрын
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colour_sergeant Colour Sergeant does actually exist in the CAF within certain reserve units. It is the equivalent of WO (Warrant Officer) throughout the CAF) It is used within the ggfg and gghg (governor generals foot guard/horse guard) who form the backbone of the "changing of the guard" in Ottawa (ceremonial)
