Dude. Flashback ! I served from '99-'03 and remember my first exercise. Woke up with 5 inches of snow on top of my bivy and i was toasty warm. So comfy that i didnt want to get up. I remember turning the sleep system bag inside out, putting my booted feet inside it, then sliding into my sleeping bag. If shit hit the fan, i could exit my bag ASAP, boots already on, and get into the action. Just had to tie the boots up when i had a spare second. PS- I hated those fabric retention tabs, especially on the mag pouches. Great video.

It took me a few years but I finally completed my C2/82/Alice ruck. C2 welded frame (very certain it is the one that Beaver Surplus once sold), 82 straps and ruck body with an Alice belt/kidney pad. I love the C2 frame as much as I hated the 82 frame, but I am only about 5'7" and I couldn't for the life of me make the 82 frame work for me.

64 pattern ruck was based off the US ruck and was awesome. We had them in 2001-2003 in my cadet corps. The negative of the 64 pattern was that you couldn't access the main pouch on the march because the valisse was on top of it. The 82 pattern was based off the British Bergen style ruck that you see the commandoes yomping and stomping the argies around with in the falklands. At CFB Borden, when we were given the 82. none of us could keep the valisse strapped in because the straps sucked and somewhere along the road you would fall out and redo your straps because it would fall down your legs. 64 pattern for me overall was better but the 82 pads were nice. I own both and my bugout bag would be the 64 for sure but maybe I would get a second 82 and adapt its padding to the 64 frame like you have in your vids.

The ALICE packs belt is called a kidney pad and strap. It wasn't made to go on the hips. Thats because at that time we issued web gear, which would interfere with a hip belt. The pack is supposed to work with the belt to get the load on the hips that way. So, an ALICE on its own won't be great without a belt kit.

Great review man! I also wore one of these packs and wasn't the best on the back. Great info though . I always wanted a jump ruck so the valise would be on top so the weight would be across your shoulders. I like your channel keep up the great

add some extra padding...it's not hard to do...get some foam and some OD green material...cover said foam and fasten around them frame......makes a HUGE difference.......I don;t get WHY serving members can;t figure this out on their own....hell when I was serving it was common to set up your kit so that it functioned FOR YOU......Military kit is ALWAYS made for the largest common denominator of people...so adjusting it for yourself is logical, as everyone is different.....

Interesting! Thanks for the review, I have an '82 pattern Rucksack, but it didn't come with the hip strap. So I used the '82 pattern webbing belt for that purpose.

I enjoy having my sleep system strapped to the bottom of the pack as opposed to the top. That's one thing I liked about my ruck when I was artillery. I could never figure out why anyone would want to have to take their sleep system off first before going into their pack or worse yet, have to pull it out of the ruck just to access what's in the bottom of it like the Americans did. Good to see this video though and hear the thoughts of someone else on our ruck sack.

Cheers on the vid mate. Love that you were taking the piss out of the $$$ gear junkies. I myself am now trying to keep it going with a degenerative bone disease so every ounce counts, I've spent a lot on newer, lighter gear. Live in BC and depending on weather the ruck gets heavier. As for your service? Respect.

I never got a chance to play with one of these, they were just coming out for reg.s when I got out of the reserves in 84, we were issued 58 pattern if I remember. Good to know about the frame, I'm 6'5".

I'm 5'8 and the ALICE pack I have still doesn't reach my hips, so I don't use it, I would definitely like to get one of those frames and see if I could somehow make a hybrid out of it.

In the eighties I carried a High Sierra backpack similar to no strap padding and I carried a Korean War Arctic feather gown sleeping bag inside of rubberized US Army laundry bag it was the same size is that bag cuz I didn't have the proper sent using straps to tie it up tighter and when it got wet it went from an 8 to 10 lb bag to at least a 25 lb bag cuz the stuff sack was rubberize it kept all that water inside so it never got to drain out

this bag has a lot of the swedish lk 70 features except the lk 70 seems more rugged much larger pockets and that sleeping bag would disappear in side it nice to see it thanks

I hated it because of my ruck’s frame dug into my shoulder blades. I think there was different size of frames though but the only thing good was the quick release straps and the valise. I was C6 Gunner in a 3 man weapons det(late 80s early 90s had low recruiting) so always carried a big load, felt like a mule some times. We had to carry a radio, karlgustov, a C7 and a C9 and all the extras usually split between 6-8 guy section. But always had fun!

About Canada and uniform why is it so hard to fund a new uniform on like Ebay ect do they not sell the uniform? i heard something about that but im not sure i want that uniform but it seams impossible

I've never used it extensively or for long periods of time I've heard other people say they are quite good and something along the same quality as the "82 Ruck. I figure if people are still looking for them they must have done something right with them lol. I live in Oshawa too by the way..............

The '82 was easy to get things in and out of, but hard on my back. A lot of guys in my regiment put the bag onto a '64 pattern frame so I tried that and loved it. Putting the weight higher up took a lot of strain off my lower back, and I didn't feel like I was leaning forward to counterbalance it. That being said lots of guys loved the '82. I've been out since '07, so no idea what the new ruck is. Cheers from MB!

I put the top part over a cross bar and the side part over the side bars on the 64 pattern frame and laced it on with paracord. The top corners aren't fastened but it doesn't matter, it's only a couple inches. Works minty, half my regiment did it.

hero army surplus in oshawa has them around 75$ and they ship, army navy outfitters out of Buffalo has them for around 160$? which i think is ridiculous, just to give you two examples.

"Spanish buckles"...they are a two part buckle...the formed plastic or metal "loop" then the tab that fits over the "loop" and the pull tab ( fabric) that goes through to secure it....

No worries mate...glad to help.........yep, they are an old design, but do the job...........they where very common as a fastener on British and Commonwealth Military kit since WW2 anyway......I had some issues with them when I was serving in the CF during Winter Indoc Ex's etc. when snow / ice get into the buckle and freeze up.......not a major issue...but it can happen....

Cool trick with the waist belt, I should suggest that to my old air cadet squadron. I've been trained differently with the 1982 Canadian Pattern rucksack. I SWEAR MY WO1's DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THESE PACKS.

you're wearing your waist belt way too low. proper fit of the rock should have your waist belt right around the belly button area for core support

I disagree, the world is full of people who go through there day to day life with back pain who use pills or the bottle to deal with it rather than see a doctor and get the underlying problems treated. These people then try and strap 80 pounds of gear on there backs and carry it all day, BOOM, they blow a disc and it must be the packs fault. Who ever invented this and sold it to DND made a fortune. This rucksack caused a lot of back problems for a lot of people. Bad info on packing the kit...time after time you see some dickwad with a valise hanging off the rucksack because they don't know how to pack their kit properly.

It's true that the 82 did not have a sternum (chest) strap as they weren't really a thing in 1982. There are some options for adding one. 1. Aquire an aftermarket sternum strap from a local camping/backpacking store. 2. Find a sternum strap from the newer CTS (cadpat) rucksack that will fit on an 82. 3. Make your own modeled off of CTS strap. I have done all three of these over the years and settled on a DIY job. How hard are they to find? That depends. Are you in Canada? Do you live near a major city or an army base? Are you on Facebook? The OB group is a great place to start.
