This is the final conclusion to our series on the 82 pattern rucksack that I have wanted to make for years. I hope you guys like it, I edited it the best I could to keep it as short as possible considering how much information we have to cover.

Man, nobody's gonna make me do ruckmarches with the old 82 ever again. Fucking hated that rucksack, but now we got the new ones, so it's fine.

Great that you used high-visibility colours for the video! Made it much easier to see. I always add a chest strap to help distribute weight on mine.

Quite clever. I did the same with my 64 pat frame in 86 after 6 months of stupidly using the 82 pat ruck I was issued in 85. I had obtained a US Alice frame in a trade and it would also work although, I never bothered to use it. I used the issue valise straps but with fastex buckles. I used it that way for nearly 10 years. Problem is that despite some nice pouches etc, the 82 main bag is limited in capacity. One can really stuff a lot in the valise but then you wind up with the bulk of your kit/load at the lower end. At lest with the 64 ruck, the load is higher up. In the mid 90s, a soldier who was sewing kit on the side, sold me a new improved 64 pat lower bag made of Cordura with several features including larger pouches. I switched back to the 64 ruck and ran that until issued the new CTS ruck in 2013. Interesting side note. In the mid - late 80s our Recce Pl would replace the valise on their 64 pat rucks with the bag of an 82 on top. This gave them 6 exterior pouches and the nice zippered top pouch. Also it allowed quick top access to a ruck bag.- a complaint about the 64 pat. Much of that 82 bag would be filled with a 77 set radio but, at least the 82 pat bag had a radio pocket. When using a pure 64 pat with a radio strapped to the frame, you had to remove the valise and usually the radio too in order to access your main bag. This way you could pack essentials in and around the radio and in the 7 external pouches with longer term stuff in the main bag of the original 64 pat. Wasn't great for lugging a sleep system as there was no valise, but, they liked to move 'light on snivel kit' anyway. One could cinch up a few poncho liners and bivvy bag (we used to buy our own back then) in a commercial stuff sack and put all that into the 64 bag.

First of all, great videos. the only thing i have not seen you do with the 82 rucksack was weave in an 82 web belt onto the 64 frame and than add pouches (utility pouch per-side, can teen preside, kfs pouch, compass pouch, rifle cleaning kit -or- what ever pouches you so choose). the only frame mod I seen was the 64 frame but would like to try this frame. like to find out if the 82 web belt goes on it for the extra pouches. but I have a couple of questions for you. have you used the other 1964 pattern rucksack (frameless) or as we called it, the mountain rucksack? also, have you used the small 1982 pattern pack or the NBC bag? I do not think you can customize the small 82 pattern bag because it was to go with the 82 webbing (with all the pouches), similar to the 1951 pattern web gear's haversack (but with a little more room). But as for the frameless 1964 pattern rucksack (which I only used in basic, long before you joined up), I was wondering if anyone has done any work with it. I was looking at putting an ALICE waist belt onto it, but not sure if anyone could sew it onto the pack. Thank you for the videos! Some of the best out there.

Thanks for watching Joe. You have a lot of great questions here and I'll try to answere them. For an open discussion on rucksack mods I recommend joining the Oshawa Bushcraft Facebook group, we have many members working on the same kind of projects. Yes, I was issued and used a NBC bag. I have handled a few of the original "soft" 64 pattern bags but couldn't bring myself to buy one because they are just so aweful. I have played around with puting different webbing pouches on the ruckbelt but rarely use more than a canteen pouch on a regular basis.

Which surplus store would you recommend in the west end of TO. I like that mod. Wish to do one myself.

Hi Gordon. You have two great resources in the west-end. Oakville surplus is a great all-around surplus store thats reasonably priced and has a very good selection of CF surplus. They had a good selection of 82 rucks the last time I was in. Whats really nice is there prices for rucks will vary based on condition. If your on a budget and don't mind one that rooks a little rough you can find something there. If you are willing to pay a little more you can find one in excellent shape too. The other option is Army Issue, I haven't been there myself but they have a very good reputation. Good luck and make sure you tell them I sent you.

Could you use a US army frame for the rucksack?

If you don't have somewhere local where you can buy one you only other option would be to have one shipped. Heroes Outdoors probably ships more surplus in Canada than anyone else but they are not the cheapest. Oakville surplus had a large stock of packs for 40$ but I don't know if they ship, you can try. If you know for certain that you don't need the original steel frame you could just order the soft parts to save on shipping, we even have members in the OB facebook group that I can vouch for that might be able to help you out.

Was tortured by an 82 pattern for over 25 years. No matter what you did those shoulder harnesses always sucked balls. The ALICE pack was the only solution. I wouldn't touch one of those things in civilian life ever again. Watched through to help your analytics. Your welcome.
