The 82 Pattern was used for so long because of cheap governments and garbage planning. No one that I know who served liked this ruck. Mostly because of the weak frame, when put on a different frame the 82 main bag wasn't bad except most are pretty weak fabric.

1. the lid has an outer pocket and an inner pocket. 2. the back pad (as you call it) flips up or down for shorter or taller persons (not to short and not to tall; they used to order special rucksacks for the extreme short and extreme tall persons). 3. chuck out that frame for an American alice frame. that frame can easily break when getting in and out of trucks/buses/planes. and 4. get a 1982 web belt for a waist belt and string it through. than get addition canteen pouches, kfs pouch, compass pouch and ammo pouches for gear or trail food.

What ever happened to army surplus stores, I remember when I was a kid there was an actual Army Surpuls store down on our main street that sold all military surplus and discontinued things, it was even run by retired vets,, you could get anything from rations to survival stuff sleeping bags rations, clothing, cook ware, water filtration, knives, you could even order a jeep if you wanted? I wonder why they closed down, it would probably be good for them to open again, would be a good way to raise more proceeds for our military and our miltary vets as well?

Surplus stores have mostly disappeared in North America largely due to the fact that most countries destroy equipment rather than surplus it so it can't fall into enemy hands. Canadian Forces have a warehouse where they shred all uniforms, packs, etc. so they can't get into the publics hands.

When I was younger there was a lot of military kit on the market. This was a result of the fact that a lot of it had been made both during and after the war and there was less need of it. In addition much of what was available had civilian applications. I remember that '37 pattern webbing in mint condition could be bought for pennies and used by everyone particularly schoolkids and workmen. Similarly many items of clothing were popular and widely available, such as leather jerkin, greatcoats and combat jackets. Nowadays military clothing is much more specialised. Compared to '37 pattern what piece of '58 pattern webbing or PLCE would have a civilian use? Or, aesthetically, who would choose to wear a modern jacket with pockets at all angles and clumps of velcro all over the place rather than an M65?

If you're not just the right body time, the packs are horrible.

Yeah. That pack sucks. I used it in basic. Then as soon as I was allowed I started using a’64 pattern ruck. The design was 24 years older than I was and basically what Forest Gump “used” in Vietnam. That thing was amazing. The ‘82 pattern might have worked well without web gear. But being a paratrooper and infanteer, I wouldn’t know. The ‘82 frame was way to tall to work with webbing. The combination sucked. The ‘64 was much shorter and sat nicely above the butt pack on the Canadian web gear.
