17:09 Thassa’s Oracle is seven points. Flash is also seven points. The best combo decks are probably Tinker or reanimator decks.
@zakmarcus62225 ай бұрын
Time Vault is one of the top decks in the format, the best versions of it are a hybrid combo-control build (the big innovator in this space was Joking101 who you've had on the channel before.) A Jeskai Breach deck called Slushie has also put up some good results recently. Creature combo builds based around Spellseeker, Agatha's Soul Cauldron, Devoted Druid, Kiki-jiki, etc. are viable. Various flavours of Reanimator are strong as well (Dimir, Esper, Oath variants.) The common thread for all these decks is that they have a solid plan B or their combos layer well together. Glass cannon combo can struggle due to the nature of 100 card singleton but you can still find success with Lotus Breach, Doomsday Breach, Flash Hulk and Thoracle decks. In general, recent Magic design doesn't give much to combo and a lot of midrange threats these days feel like 1 card combos (I'm looking at you Minsc and Boo) so the format can feel like a bit of a midrange slugfest.
@janmelantu74905 ай бұрын
5-color Lands Thoracle (Thoracle 7 + Strip Mine 2 + Tainted Pact 1) did exceptionally well at the Canlander year-end. As did Breach Storm (Lotus 7 + Breach 3). Paradox Academy and Eggs are also popular combo decks. But also Red Deck Wins (the points don’t matter lol) and Death & Taxes are still top decks.

@@jonathanvogels1690 Lawless is obviously without White, white is the maker of laws. Thoughtless is obviously sans Blue (blue is the color of thought and research). Emotionless is obviously without Red (red is the color of emotion). The last two are harder. I could see Selfless as without Black (black is the color ambition/prioritizing oneself). And that leaves Shameless as without Green (green being the color of the animalistic and natural, you don't care about shame you just exist as you are and live in the moment?), but that doesn't work, because that would be "Shameful", because Green is missing, so I'm not sure about the reasoning for that one sorry. Great idea indeed @TeaHauss!

Something I love of Canlander is how even the most aggressive combo deck needs to be able to box against just good old fashioned "So, 8 power turn 3 going in?" Surprisingly fair and balanced format for something you can play freaking Ancestral Recall
@Atom1c11415 ай бұрын
So for Canlander, right now the midrange piles are king because of the best cards fitting into those decks from recent sets IE. Forth Eorlings/Broadside Bombardiers/Minsc&Boo etc etc. However combo is very potent, lands combo will destroy midrange decks because glacial chasm and tabernacle, storm decks are strong as well, artifact combo is very popular with paradox engine/the one ring (can't do that in Cedh). Loading Ready Run runs a canlander championship every year and lands combo just won the 2023 season.

Love you guys! Thanks for the Gay to Win merch and I'm really thrilled to see you guys get into CamLander. To my, the format is everything I love about the spirit and ethos of cEDH while actually being magic. 1v1, 20 life is just such a different experience from Commander's multiplayer metagame. And it's a slightly different skill set, which is really interesting to watch. You guys broke it down and referenced some sequencing decisions and misplays, and that's what CanLander is all about you me. Both Decks are basically loaded guns. A pile of the most busted cards in the game. The first one to blink gets shot. Games get ended over tempo and incremental advantage instead of advantage engines. It's magic on the micro level where as cedh is magic on the macro level to me. I love that you can get absolutely blown out on turn two in canlander and you just shuffle up and go again. Instead of getting blown out on turn two in cEDH and now you have to sit through the rest of a game of Commander. Love that we got to see five games in the video. And they are five good games! Love seeing you guys play with initiative once, miss half the triggers and still come to the conclusion of "wait a second, this is busted as shit" Great video and hope to see more like it

@loganator3265 ай бұрын
Canadian Highlander does have combo decks, but god are they convoluted as all hell. Actual masterclasses of deckbuilding because they don't focus on 1-2 combos as much as they focus on assembling an engine that combos out and wins the game
@jcprofit5 ай бұрын
So, on the combo decks, thoracle consult is a deck, but moreso the combos are paradox engine, tolarian academy, lands with fast bond, and underworld breach lines

If you like cEDH and Canadian Highlander I highly recommend Duel Commander, It's a great format. Having a commander gives some build-around potential and requires less of a goodstuff-ish approach than Canadian Highlander. The ban list includes cards like sol ring, mana crypt, fierce guardianship, deflecting swat, etc. It makes for a slower and more consistent format than Canadian Highlander. I play cEDH, Canlander, and Duel Commander, they're really all worth playing.

Best combo deck in the format is probably Time Vault (Redless Vault is usually how it’s described on deck dumps) If you’re in the Canlander discord, one of the TOs has a spreadsheet of basically every tourney winner over the last 2 years
@lane96685 ай бұрын
Also if you want combo decks that're familiar to you as a cEDH player, various forms of Jeskai Underworld Breach (usually called Slushie) or Thoracle Doomsday lists will probably feel pretty approachable. The Breach decks are mostly just Jeskai control with a combo finish, but Thoracle Doomsday is a little more all in, and it DOES get to play Thoracle + Consult. Main gameplan is Doomsday -> Thoracle lines, though, since tutors are pretty slim with Thoracle eating 70% of your points.
@cobaltbeau5 ай бұрын
The (obvious) thing about the combo point - in EDH, you have to beat 3 times as many players that each have twice as much life. That's a much higher bar to clear with combat damage. Oracle consult is win no matter how big their life totals are.

As for combo lists, theres a ThOracle Lands list where you can Crucible back surveil lands that you wasteland yourself and with Fastbond and a Courser of Kruphix you mill your whole library and win with Thassa's its a lot, but im sure there are other combos that win well. Check out the most recent top 8 that LRR and Yellow Jacket put on and you'll see a few more combo lists there too
