This parody tries to use humor to deal with a REAL problem in Alberta, and Calgary. Since the oil crash and following anti oil movements the job situation in Alberta is terrible. Though If id do something like that I would take my RV trailer with me and live in that while there. Great thing about Vancouver is you will never see it get even close to cold enough to render Propane useless. Alberta gets the to boiling point(of propane) of -40C quite easily, when that happens it is basically useless and you freeze to death in your RV

True Story: I met a man who commute on foot from Sharjah to Ummul Quwain. This place is near to Dubai. He wokes up around 2AM and he walks all night and around 9AM he reaches his driving school, where he was becoming a truck driver. He was from India and a Sikh who wanted to have heavy vehicle license. I gave him a lift anonymously because I found him very early morning in a remote place like there was nothing nearby and a person shouldn't be there in desert site and nobody was there many miles long and later me and my wife interviewed him in car as we dropped him at his driving school, then after few days we went to his school and we complained his teacher that he walks all night long to reach here, then his teacher arranged some location nearby place. He was too shy and didn't said to his teacher and a thin guy and was basically a labour. His name was Dilbar Singh. There is no public transportation in Ummul Quwain. It happened somewhere in the month of July 18.

Nice satire, and it does hit hard for Calgarians out of work due to the Oil Sands downturn. If this were real, he and his employer would be in violation of BC labour law as you must account for travel time that is outside the municipality as part of the maximum hours of work permitted, which in BC is something like 12hrs per day, although it is a complicated rule. But the fatigue a worker would experience driving 1900km round trip and then working a full shift is excessive. "Despite any provision of this Part, an employer must not require or directly or indirectly allow an employee to work excessive hours or hours detrimental to the employee's health or safety." The employer would be responsible for employing someone living and commuting from Calgary to BC.

The law states that "an employer must not require or DIRECTLY ALLOW AN EMPLOYEE TO WORK EXCESSIVE HOURS OR HOURS DETRIMENTAL TO THE EMPLOYEE'S HEALTH OR SAFETY." It's pretty clear that the employee IS in fact in violation of the law, by allowing him to work full shifts if travel time is accounted for.

Nice satire. Commuting is a big problem. So much waste of people's time and potential. Someone who commutes 4 hours for a 8 hour work day, essentially has a 60 hour work week, with 20 unpaid hours. For every hour of work, you wasted 30 minutes of your life commuting. Imagine if those people could spend those 20 hours doing something meaningful instead. Heck, I would even think the government should get involved to try to see if they can help people get local jobs. Lots of people would probably be prepared to work 10 hours extra, if that meant they didn't have to spend 20 hours on commuting. That would benefit society.

I did 300 kms a day on my new job for 15 days. Woke up at 5 am .leave at 7am . Ride 150 kms to arrive at office before 10 am . I Left office at 730 everyday. Reached home at 10 pm. No breaks apart from fuel and toilet sometimes. I used to drink water a lot. And ate a sandwich for lunch. Sometimes I used to sleep late because of having fun with friends. But three hours was enough for me. It's absolutely possible for the ones who love doing it. What made me do this was just the fun. It made me happy. I was happy to ride. I didn't like the idea of living in hostel after office and waking up for office and farting all day. I'd rather eat less, drink more, work smart, and mostly ride all day

This isn't that far from reality. When I first moved out with my wife I would do any job anywhere. I would take a grey hound 2 hours each way for a 4 hour security gig shift, company would pay for grey hound tickets. After taxes I would pocket a cool $30, but that's just what it took at the time and what was available to me. I would get jobs in my city too but it was constant bouncing around in the city or a few hours out to different locations. And I had no car. Whatever it took.
