The GSG 9 was founded after the Olympic disaster of 1972. In 1977 they liberated the hijacked German airplane "Landshut" in Mogadishu, without any victims among the hostages.
@Far1988Ай бұрын
Two additional facts: The Landshut operation is still a staple for hostage rescue operations and is studied by new SF recruits because of how smooth it went. Funnily enough German hotel guests knew that some sort of special forces arrived because they stayed at a hotel in Mogadishu. Suddenly 10 to 20 buffed up people arrived with a lot of luggage and they were "swimming lines in the pool like they were olympic swimmers", one of the hotel guests remembered.

They even got the German Optimus Prime as the narrator for the video. "In the beginning, there was terrorism. And then began the war." 😂

GSG 9 is technically a part of what used to be border control. Police in Germany after 1945 was a thing of the states, with the Bund (the Feds) only dealing in border control and, like, customs and all that. Oh, and airports and railway tracks and stations. The BGS, Bundesgrenzschutz (literally: Federal Border Protection) was the particular police dealing within that jurisdiction. GSG spelled out is „Grenzschutzgruppe“, literally „Border Protection Group“. I seem to recall GSG 9 getting (re)organized as a special federal police force (probably even better referred to as a kind of counterstrike force) in the early to mid-1970s, as a response to the Rote Armee Fraktion terrorist group and usually Palestinian terrorist hijackers, and equipped and armed for counter-terrorism strikes, including counter-terrorism efforts abroad, as with airplane hijackings. (I seem to recall GSG 9 being the guys successfully storming the hijacked Lufthansa plane „Landshut“ at Mogadishu airport in Somalia in the autumn of 1977.)

Only in Westgermany and after reunification police was a thing of the states , Eastgerman Volkspolizei was centralized. Strangely a sort of counterpart of GSG 9 in East Germany also had a 9 in their designation. And Bundesgrenzschutz was paramilitary ( Combatant Status) until 1994.
@Roberternst72Ай бұрын
@@brittakriep2938 Sorry, but when I see something about GSG 9, as a West German, I certainly don’t give the GDR, the East German dictatorship, any thoughts at all. Besides, the GDR didn’t even HAVE states between 1952 (de facto, de jure 1968) and 1990, iirc, hence their police or ACTUAL paramilitary (like „kasernierte Volkspolizei“) can‘t have been the states‘ jurisdiction. The GDR wasn’t a FEDERAL republic (except for a couple of months in 1990 and arguably between 1949 and 1952, but given the GDR‘s actual system, that first period wasn’t really a federal system) and fortunately is completely irrelevant these days.
@ropeburn6684Ай бұрын
@@Roberternst72 In hindsight I find it pretty interesting how regional identities (Saxon, Thuringian, Brandenburgish etc.) survived the GDR pretty much unchanged, until eventually becoming the federal states of today. Goes to show that a few decades of whatever government system can't undo over 1000 years of history in the slightest.

GSG 9 is one of the best CT units around. They were formed as one of the first CT units in the early 70s along with GIGN and JAMAM, so these guys had to develop some groundbreaking methods & tactics. GSG 9 is pretty much a Tier 1 SOF unit even though they are police, since the unit is based on the SAS and Sayeret Matkal, they cross train with them but also with Delta, Devgru and JTF2. Also, they perform abroad missions in foreign countries if necessary.
@DJone4oneАй бұрын
GSG9 means in German = Grenzschutz Gruppe 9 (Borderprotect Group 9). Bundespolizei = state or federal state Police. The Bundespolizei have many stations to protecting. Harbors, Airports and trainstations.

The state of the art elite anti terror unit of the German Federeal Police. GSG 9, formerly short for Grenzschutzgruppe 9 (German for 'Border Guard Group 9'), is an elite special forces unit of the German Federal Police (Bundespolizei) to combat terrorism and violent and organized crime. Similar units are the SEK units of the several state police forces. Kind of similar is the KSK of the Bunteswehr, the military counterpart: The Kommando Spezialkräfte or KSK (English: Special Forces Command) is the special forces military unit and a large brigade-level unit of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) for special operations and commando warfare, reconnaissance, counterterrorism, combat search and rescue as well as military advisor.

@@UntilWeregoing it realy surprises me, that no one it seems, actualy mentioned what *"Kanak"* in german means. > We know it is in english a written *C* at start and not a *K* but sounds in german exact same. > The word in total including the written "u" sounds as a german "a" is lit. 1on1 with german spoken "Kanak(e)". *Du Kanak ~ Du Kanake! > You Kanak(e) !!* > It is a german swear word! > Wiki: Kanake Kanake (plural: Kanaken; also Kanacke) or Kenek (plural Keneks) is a mostly derogatory word in German colloquial language for people from Southeast Europe, the Near and Middle East and North Africa. In addition to being used as a swear word, it is also used as a german *"Trotzwort"* > Word of defiance. So be aware now speaking it out in the german audiance room, not knowing the context behind the *spoken* word "you" think is unique to your region,..which it is (sadly) not.

I know it is so off topic, but I am still sooo fascinated by Mace's skill, to hear German terms like "GSG 9 Bundespolizei" and then being able to repeat this like a German would, too ! Mace, I know you said you are learning a different language at the moment, but I would love to watch you, teaching yourself German, because you already sound great, this must be one of your talents ! Just compare this to Ryan, who focuses on German content for two years now, and is still screaming HOLLER at us at the start of his videos, instead of actually saying "Hallo". And Mace is even able to pronounce "Moin" and "Tschau or Tschüss" like a pro :) !
@UntilWeregoingАй бұрын
I’d love to share that but I think I’d need a separate channel. Not sure how many people want to watch me learn German haha Thank you for your kind words ❤️

GSG stands for Grenzschutzgruppe, Border Protection Group. That originates from the time as the Federal Police was only the Federal Border Police and the Federal Railway Police. The group 9 was founded after the disaster at the Olympics in Munich 1972, as Palestinian terrorists of the "Black September" group took Israeli athletes as hostages, which were all killed during a dilettantish liberation attempt by the Bavarian police at Munich airport, as well as one policeman; the name was maybe also kind of a disguise to not to show off the new capabilities prematurely. This disguise was lifted with the successful liberation of the airplane "Landshut" - hijacked by the PFLP - in Mogadishu (Somalia), to which airport the airplane had been redirected after the start in Palma de Mallorca (via Cyprus, Dubai, Aden/Yemen). No hostage was killed during the liberation, which was the foundation for the fame of the GSG-9.
