I always dig how they're tackling modern day shit, especially differences between races and stuff; it's really eye opening to hear from an Asian-american perspective. This is compared to other guests where they mostly talk about themselves which may or may not have any relevance to the majority of people listening. Helps that they both have great chemistry and they're funny from time to time. David and Joe are the best combination so far!

Thanks for bringing up the political stuff. I was considered a conservative Democrat based on a couple of tests I took back in high school/college and I never wanted to talk about politics because I knew it would cause problems among friends. And I was that person who started feeling more liberal based on the stuff that the media put out there. Ever since the last presidential election, I've actually been looking into facts about gun control, abortion, immigration, etc. rather than just take in what the media shows so that I could be more informed and see who's spreading the lies. Now I can securely say I'm moderate because there are things I like about the right and the left. I just hope more people can be more open to level-headed discussions and try to work together for solutions rather than against each other. This podcast is great! Love you guys.

In regards of cultural appropriation: the line is drawn where the dominant culture takes from a minority culture and passes it off as their own while the minority is still discriminated against. (Ex. Locs being seen cool on non-black people, cornrows being renamed “boxer braids” etc) Those who partake in a another culture in a respectful way are seen as appreciating the culture, not appropriating.

I love having Joe on the podcast because he's actually culturally educated and is willing to learn something he doesn't know. And thank you for knowing the difference between appropriation and appreciation lol. I hate when people think one or the other doesn't exist because the world is black and white. I also knew someone who not only faked the way he spoke, but it was like he didn't have a personality of his own. It wasn't just in person- If you were texting him, he'd try to write like a 19th century vampire (none of it made sense, but they're hilarious) but at the same time, he'd start to use your phrases or colloquialisms. It was like personality appropriation. No one said anything because 1. He walked on eggshells and 2. None of us liked him. What's also funny is he told me, "don't let me deter you from dating other white guys." We never dated and he tried to project his racism and shitty behavior onto me. He was someone who said the N-word behind your back, but swore up and down he was "fighting against bigotry" (an actual thing he said).

Nah guys ... the problem with Andrew Zimmern isn't that his opinions on Asian food aren't valid. He probably knows more than i do as well. The problem is that there ARE authentic chinese food restaurants in the midwest, there are Chinese chefs who open authentic chinese restaurants but non-chinese people don't go to them... because let's be real a lot of white people find it weird. But then a white guy opens a restaurant and all of a sudden those same people are now open to it. On top of that, it becomes the "new big thing", he's get's a lot of publicity, he becomes known as the guy who brought authentic chinese cuisine to the midwest, he's going to charge way more money for it and ultimately make a lot of money. And the Chinese chefs are like what the hell?
@Laura-Yu
@Laura-Yu 5 жыл бұрын
Mr Robots But can you blame them? You’re trying to bring foreign cuisine to a country that may not have the taste buds to appreciate it, and then the non Chinese chefs change it up a bit to fit with the tastes of that country. Of course that place would be more popular. I don’t know what you’re even complaining about
@natsoti6268
@natsoti6268 5 жыл бұрын
로라 [Laura] except that he is sayin he is cooking “authentic” Chinese food. Though if you look at his menu...outside of dan Dan Noodles or xian style noodles, a lot of his menu is still your basic American style Chinese food. Anyway I’m not going to comment further on his food since I haven’t eaten it (but I will bet you 100% his version of Kung Pao shrimp is not that much better than a good Chinese restaurant) But this same thing happened with Andy Ricker and Pok Pok, who opened an authentic Thai restaurant. I’ve eaten it and he did not “change it up”, His food is authentic and it is good. ...but it’s certainly not a level of Thai food that is equal to the money, celebrity, and acclaim he has gotten for it. I mean dude won a Pacific NW chef of the year award or he was on Bourdain’s show. Meanwhile I’ve known plenty of Thai restaurants serving the same, if not more, authentic flavored Thai food who don’t get recognized. Or worse they struggle or close due to lack of business. Your regular Thai restaurant serves Issan style sausage and it’s the “wierd” dish people rarely order...he serves the exact same dish and it’s a sign of making something exotic and pushing the boundaries of cooking or whatever.

Hey guys! I’m a big fan from the Bay Area, I teach Ethnic Studies in Oakland, CA. I just wanted to give my input on the Diddy comment. I respect Diddy’s anger because yes, Black people created hiphop and most of the world enjoys it, but it doesn’t mean that the world supports Black people. Also, especially within Asian culture and how much anti-Blackness exists, it becomes problematic when we encourage people to enjoy Black culture without critiquing how they treat Black people. Just food for thought! Feel free to reach out for more convo if y’all are curious. Cheers!

Completely agree that the taiko drummer was an act of cultural appreciation. He was not trying to “wear” a group’s aesthetics and indirectly disregard history. HOWEVER, cultural appropriation is a real thing, David. You mentioned the Kardashian’s, and they are living proof of the appropriation of black women. I understand this word gets thrown around too easily, but it’s not something to resent. It’s something to identify and call out. Just my two cents... anyways, thank you for giving us quality content, I love hearing your discussions!

Cultural appropriation is a problem when you are fine taking and enjoying all the culture, but aren't down with the people themselves. Like you'll be listening to and acting hip hop all day long on the one hand and saying "all lives matter" on the other hand.

You are allowed to pick and choose aspects of certain cultures to like. You can like japanese food, but think kimonos look silly. Same with politics. I can like guns, and believe in global warming.
@natsoti6268
@natsoti6268 5 жыл бұрын
@@calebpettifer well you are technically allowed to do anything you want, doesnn't mean you can't be shitty for doing certain things. I probably shouldn't have chosen a political example... but original point remains. culture isn't just a commodity like shopping in a store. culture is linked with the people that make it. so my only point is if you liked Japanese food or anime but didn't really like Japanese people or cared about them... then you are essentially just using them and that is kind of shitty.
@calebpettifer
@calebpettifer 5 жыл бұрын
@@natsoti6268 i disagree, because you are still spreading the culture. For example, I'm white, and if i see people start serving american food and american product in other countries i think its dope. I like wearing jeans, those are an american product, that when I'm in cambodia and rip my jeans, i know there us a good chance i can go into a store and there's a good chance i can find a new pair to wear. I know its not quite what your saying but its just an analogy

It is worrying how Joe uses his words. I definitely don't think he means any harm. However, the ease in which he explains his experience without showing doubt, that bias, in all forms, always exists paints him as a man no longer looking for answers and comfortable with his current knowledge as gospel. I suppose it would be hard to always question yourself in a short podcast.

eh, i was honestly expecting more from these two, but i felt like this episode was fiiiillled with hypocrisy. For example, they talk about not hearing out the 'other side' of an issue, yet immediately dismissive at just the mention of issue with racism/ cultural appropriation/ "why can he where braids but i was ridiculed for it" and rule it out as oh everyone else is just too sensitive rather than actually exploring and examining and willing to see some kind of understanding to these issues. meh just dissapointed in such missed conversation over them not really wanting to potentially see any wrong in their ways and changing.

The society that has been cultivated is that more negative comments and memes appears because psychologically speaking you're more likely to spread a bad experience than a good one. You see it in the comment section and on most platforms. I've been all over the US as a mixed minority and 99% of the time no matter where I end up there are good people. But there are the fringe of society are the most outspoken and those are the only ones being reported. But this is a great episode not to jump down each others throat and work it out by treating each other as humans first.
