Racism against Asian men in the entertainment industry is starting to come to light, so Hollywood must be trying to get ahead of the controversy

Still not even close to enough, though, for instance, the only male marvel hero, who got their own movie… Who also didn’t have a love interest… Was Shang Chi.

Also Asian men are all competitive with one another. So it doesn't help that we're always trying to get on top of one another instead of lifting each other up.

Well the problem is that the entertainment industry in the West is controlled by or run mainly by liberal Jews and they will make false claims that they are not racist and use another excuse it won’t sell if they use Asian male actors.

When Joy Luck Club came out, I thought that it was pretty cool at first. But then I wondered if Hollywood would have allowed for a similar movie humanizing asian men at that time, and the answer was no. The west is more inclusive towards Asian women in general, while Asian men are more likely to be seen as perpetual foreigners. It’s slowly changing now, but there’s much more room for improvement.

Sadly for He Quan and many Asian actors back in the 80s and 90s, there weren't that many lead roles for them in Hollywood. Most roles for Asians back in those days were mostly token Asian person, love interest (only applied to female Asians) or playing a villain. For the youngsters out there, Jackie Chan actually tried to make it in Hollywood in the early 80s before he gave up and went back to Hong Kong and became a big star. He made two Hollywood produced films in the early 80s and both of them tanked at the box office. They tried to make him into a combination of Bruce Lee and Clint Eastwood and it didn't work.

@@bigbigdog If you're alive and know of Jackie Chan back in the 70s, then I'll take your words for it. I was very young in the 80s and grew up in Southeast Asia and Chan aka Zern Loung, was the king of action star. I saw The Protector in Thailand, his last Hollywood produced film and I didn't really like it.

@@bigbigdog Brah, I've seen ALL of Chan's films from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Drunken Master is one of my favorite Chan's films. He decided to make Police Story because he didn't like how The Protector turned out. The Protector was directed by an American director and Chan didn't see eye to eye with him. In fact, Chan re-edited the film for the Asian markets.

Let's be honest ever since Hollywood saw Bruce Lee they decided they weren't going to allow an east asian men to be represented positively in society because they saw that Bruce Lee wanted a better future for actors that looked like him. Even during the silent film era they were keen on using east asian actors as main characters to be villfied and once they used them they basically disposed of them

If you guys have ever watched Bruce lee story back in the 90s you'll see how he struggle.. to get into the Hollywood and they only took him because he's incredible in martial art. That was the green Hornet series where they dont want him to take off his mask because people don't want to see his chinese eyes. Bruce went back to China to make movies and becomes more successful there with movies like way of the dragon before they finally acknowledge him and people misses the green Hornet guy which asian can only play only as a sidekick in the Hollywood not as the "main character" thats right being an Asian you can only play a sidekick role. So when they acknowledge Bruce finally made a stand to his last movie enter the dragon. Linda was very supportive and love Bruce so much no matter the racist he face in school but it gotta put a tears in your eyes when Bruce was gonna go to China and maybe live there because he has an argument with Linda that Bruce is not gonna be a star because he's just a little China man..they were in debt and losing money but Linda just loves her husband. It wasn't just a different culture argument. All I know is the standard in Hollywood is youths speak English like American because many viewers tends to mock accents even Stallone and Arnold was mocked let alone Asians. Secondly..usa people tends to lose interest once they see the American show is lead actored by asian maybe it was the looks, height and physical standards that they dont think asian is not qualified. One thing is for sure..3rd and 4rth citizens are Asians and hispanic, immigrants while battling for top 1 and 2nd are dark and light Americans it doesn't matter..any of them can get the main character roles and usa will support them.

Andrew hit the nail on the head when he said that the entertainment industry is all about capitalism. In the past, Hollywood did care about catering to any Asian people. There was no "Asian market" or "Chinese market." But now there is. I think in Hollywood, one huge game changer was the Transformers franchise, because that was huge in China. The studio made billions of dollars in China alone. So Hollywood started to make more and more movies to appeal to the Asian market. And that then led to films such as Crazy Rich Asians and Shang Chi. Then on television, you had Fresh Off the Boat and Squid Game becoming huge hits. And there was no way Disney would've put out a live action Mulan movie back in the 1980s. It would've been too big of a gamble. But today? They know they could make up the entire cost of production from China ticket sales alone. It's a bit of a bonus that Asian Americans are the fastest growing minority group in America.

When Crazy Rich Asians came out a lot of my non Asian friends were like "Hey congrats Asians finally get a movie". This sentiment matched that coming from a lot Asian Americans in mainstream media. I didnt understand all the attention the movie was getting and I thought it was insulting bc there have been and continues to be tons of great movies featuring Asians all the time, coming from Asia. The underlying implication to me atleast was that Crazy Rich Asians mattered bc it was a mainly English speaking movie for a mainly white audience. Other that the movie was just an average romcom. Thats sort of how I frame this video's argument. Does the movie/actor only matter when its for a white English speaking audience? Im happy for Ke Quan but didnt he also have roles in a few Chinese movies during his "time off". Is it possible he's only an average actor with average looks? I think he may have had a hard time getting leading roles is Asia as well. With that said, I loved him in EEAO.

Apples to apples comparison: Christian Bale was also a child actor around the same time as He Quan, also starred in a Spielberg movie, however not as big as Temple of Doom, went on to star in over 50 movies and worked almost his entire life. You can deny racism in Hollywood doesn't exist but you'll also have to deny basic facts and evidence that debunks your assertions
@Bluboy30
@Bluboy30 Жыл бұрын
Let's be real, Bale grew up and look like a traditional Hollywood leading man. White, muscular, tall and the often use term "All American" look even though he's not American. That's why he became a big star. Unfortunately for He Quan, he's Asian, not that tall, doesn't have that manly typical Hollywood leading man look and that's why he didn't become a big star when he became an adult. I know Quan is getting all the hype currently, let's see how many roles he'll get after the hype dies down.
@DiamondFlame45
@DiamondFlame45 Жыл бұрын
@@Bluboy30 The point is that Asian Americans tend to dismiss racism. Don't get me wrong, I bet both Bale and Quan worked hard but to dismiss the subliminal influence of race into their careers is very disingenuous. I just think that asian americans dont want to play the racism card because they want to be that good model minority to be in the graces of white adjancey but they dont have to be mutually exclusive. You can acknowledge that you didnt work hard enough but also take into account the white dominance in media that influences decisions.
@DiamondFlame45
@DiamondFlame45 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! You can acknowledge that He Quan did not work hard enough in the industry AND the influence of systemic racism in the entertainment industry because it subliminally skews white/euro centric. I swear that asian americans just want to feel that they are above racism but look at all the recent asian hate crimes. They just dont want to be in the bad graces of those in authority even though they are the ones who tend to treat them like crap.

I think its cause since the 70s Asian actors could only be the lead if they knew martial arts. Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Bruce Lee had no problems getting the lead role but they were always playing a guy who just fights in an action movie. At the end of the day it is a business though, and other then those 3 there's no asian actor imo thats guaranteed box office draw. Even now Simu Liu is only the lead with the backing of being an MCU character. Ive never seen him in anything else as a leading man cause I dont know how big a draw he actually is without crutch of playing a superhero

Hello guys! I am enjoying watching your "Asian" videos. Like my earlier comments I still find mass dislike of Asians hard to believe. I am not being super left virtuous signaling. In fact I am much to the Right. Again, in my long life I simply have never had any friend express Anti-Asian words or deeds. Perhaps you may consider investigating successful stories of Asians integrating into American culture at all levels. You may also consider that sometimes it is the Asians who resist acculturation. I do understand how it feels. I am a second generation Irish Catholic. It was difficult breaking into Wasp banks of the day. Well be good and be happy.
