okay, i know this is head canon but here is the canon, this is an excerpt from the journal of the two sisters book by amy keating rogers. Dear diary, My name is Celestia. Today, my sister, Luna, and I are to be crowned princesses of Equestria. I'm starting this journal so we can both write our amazing adventures as princesses. Well, I hope they are amazing. I don't actually know if they will be amazing. I'm assuming they will be amazing. But I guess I shouldn't assume they will be amazing because i have never been princess of Pegasi, Unicorns, and Earth ponies. Maybe they won't be amazing. Maybe I won't be amazing. Maybe I'll be really rotten. What if I'm known as Celestia, the really rotten princess of Equestria? Okay, calm down, Celestia. Your freaking yourself out again. Take a deep breath. You're going to work hard like you always do. And as long as you work hard, you're going to be just fine. Okay. That's better. First of all, I just want to say I can't even believe that Luna and I are going to be princesses! It all happened so suddenly and unexpectedly. A very unusual Unicorn sorcerer who called himself Star swirl the bearded approached us. And when I say unusual I'm not meaning to be rude, just accurate. First of all, he came by "the Bearded" quite honestly because he has the longest brown beard I've ever seen! second of all, he wore a large wizard hat and cloak with stars-and moons pattern on the fabric, and all over the edging were bells that jingled and jangled when he walked. Let's just say i could easily find him in a crowd! Star Swirl and his representatives - Smart Cookie of the Earth ponies; Private Pansy of the pegasi; and Star Swirl's apprentice, Clover the clever of the Unicorns- told us all about the previous struggles between the Pegasi, Unicorns and Earth ponies. Since the tribes came to a peaceful understanding and established Equestria, they wanted rulers to help uphold that peace, which was why they came to us. They knew that Alicorns stood for everything Equestria was founded upon: love, harmony, and friendship. And because Alicorns are a combination of Pegasi, Unicorns and Earth ponies, they believed that we could represent the citizens of Equestria in an unbiased manner-all ponies being equal in our eyes. So they asked us to be their princesses. And that was really nice, but still a whole lot of pressure! I mean, Luna and I are very honored. How could we not be? It's not every day that you're asked to rule over an entire land. Actually, Luna and I clarified that our role in Equestria wouldn't be as rulers and we will not think of the ponies of Equestria as our subjects. That would be very awkward. We will be Equestria's gaurdians. That sounds much friendlier. We will serve and protect, watching over Equestria's lands and skies, keeping them peaceful and safe. I just hope I end up doing a really good job and I actually have amazing adventures to write about in this journal. Celestia Diary, We are Luna and we Are to be crowned princess of Equestria! Thou art our royal diary in which we shall write our most profound thoughts of being said princess and... Oh, forget it. I was going to try to write in the Royal Canterlot Voice, which Celestia and I learned when we were fillies. The Alicorns thought it was an important part of our education, but we both thought speaking like that every day sounded silly. The only time we really used it was when we were playing. See, when we ran and flew in the hills of Canterlot, we'd pretend we were princesses and talk in The Royal We, being all formal and haughty and stuff. But as much as it's fun to speak, writing in the Royal Canterlot Voice is just too exhausting! So I'm starting over. I'm Luna. This is celestia's and my journal, where we're going to make note of the interesting stuff that happens while we're princesses. Or, as it's formally called... The Era of the Two Sisters! Exclamation point! I'm going to write about the good stuff, the bad stuff, and hopefully some really awesome magic stuff, which will probably fall under good, bad, and awesome. Today is our official coronation. And while I was excited when Celestia and I were first approached by Star Swirl and his band of merry ponies, now that it's actually happening, I'm a little nervous. I just really hope i do a good job for Equestria as their princess. I mean, it's going to be incredible, but it's also a huge responsibility! In the end, I need to remember to be myself, and part of that is getting to know everypony and having fun! I'm excited to fly with the pegasi, get down to earth with some Earth ponies, and whip up some spells with the Unicorns. And I'm especially excited to talk to that Star Swirl the Bearded guy again. I bet he's a great sorcerer and we could really learn a lot from each other. Plus, he has the best name ever! Luna Dear diary, Today's coronation was so lovely! Being crowned princess of Equestria beside Luna almost felt like something I'd lived before... like deja vu. When Luna and I were fillies, we'd make tiaras out of the gems we found in the hills of canterlot. Luna was so good at finding the prettiest ones. Then we would pretend we were princesses and fly about "our land" guiding all of our "subjects," which of course were rabbits and squirrels and a turtle named Jim. So today, as Star Swirl the Bearded placed our crowns upon our heads, it just felt like a dream come true. Afterward, everypony enjoyed this fantastic party. The Earth ponies had grown delicious food and the Pegasi had arranged the perfect weather. But the most magical moment came when Star Swirl stepped up with ten other Unicorns. Using their Unicorn magic, Star Swirl and five of the Unicorns focused their energies and brought down the sun. Star Swirl then joined the other five Unicorns, and using all their concentration, he guided them in raising the moon. It was truly amazing and took a huge amount of powerful magic. Luna and I watched in complete awe. In thanks, Luna and I shot colorful lights from our horns, decorating the night sky. Everypony cheered in celebration. It was the perfect finale to a most wonderful day. I don't know what I was so worried about. Everything and everypony was perfect! Celestia Dear diary, Because Alicorns age at a different rate than the rest of the pony races, Luna and I don't have our cutie marks yet, Being a "blank flank" at our age never felt unusual. I've always known that I would get my cutie mark at the proper time. But now that we are surrounded by so many ponies who have their cutie marks and are so much younger than we are, I must admit, it feels a bit odd. Hopefully now that we are princesses, Luna and I will find our true calling and finally get our cutie marks. Celestia Dear Diary, Celie and I have been touring all of Equestria, getting to know everypony and trying to decide where to build our castle. We've been flying here and there, putting on our royal princess faces, and frankly, I'm exhausted. The question is, where do we build? It's not like every part of Equestria isn't nice. In fact, everypony is making a point of showing us just how perfect their part of Equestria is. But to be perfectly honest, I'd like it to be a place that's kind of away from everypony. A sanctuary. Someplace where we can have our private time. ugh, is that a bad thing for a princess to say probably, but even a princess wants some downtime, right? Anyhow, as we continued our search, Star Swirl told us about this place in Equestria called the Everfree Forest. And this place is awesome! It's totally unlike any other part of Equestria. The plants grow on their own and the animals take care of themselves - no help from the Earth ponies! The weather does its own thing - no Pegasus assistance needed. It's just kind of ... Wild! But then at the edge, there's this ravine, and deep in the ravine is this really cool tree. And, I don't know, there's just something about it. Something... magical. I just got this feeling when I saw it. I think this is where we should build our castle. Luna Dear Diary, Luna and I were talking with Star Swirl about that tree in the ravine at the edge of the Everfree Forest, and he told us that it's not any ordinary tree. It is the Tree of Harmony! Oh My Gosh! I couldn't believe it. I totally flipped! I mean, I literally flipped in the air. Luna snorted at me and rolled her eyes because I'm such a dork. But to me it was like meeting the most famous tree in the world. But that's because it's the most famous tree in the world! I've read about the Tree of Harmony in books, but I didn't know that it actually existed! According to the legends, the Tree of Harmony is incredibly powerful and is said to hold the elements of all that is good and true. It's such a fascinating tree, and I'am so drawn to it. On it are three markings - a sun, a moon, and a star. I've asked Star Swirl what these stand for, but he seems to have no idea. I don't know why, but i feel like the sun image is calling to me, Is that weird? Luna and I are both so drawn to the Tree of Harmony that we decided to build the Castle of the Two Sisters above the ravine. Star Swirl agreed, saying that having our castle built near the Tree of Harmony would give us strength and help us protect Equestria. Celestia okay I'm going to stop here because if i don't i'll end up transcribing the whole book. these are the first 20 pages and it illustrates a little bit about the two sisters (there are a lot more so go buy this book goddamit Lauren Faust had a hand in making this book as she helped amy with lore.)

Yes, finally! Thank you, Canned Cream, that you're giving the princesses some credit, there are certainly places where credit is due to them. Not only to Cadence and Twilight, those are obvious givens, but as for Celestia and Luna, who get considerably less screen time and character development, I do hear that they (yes, even Luna at times) can get some flack for just that. And it's not their faults, the writers really should give them more screen time and character development, hopefully something that will be remedied in season 5, at least for Luna. One thing that can annoy me when I hear other people talking about these two is that when I ask something like, "So, what exactly do they do, anyway? We don't get to see them a whole lot, do we?" And I'll get mocking answers having to do with Celestia being a kind of exposition fairy (which, I'm not gonna lie, that can happen to her, to a lot of a degree), or outside of using their magic for raising the sun and moon to pass the days, they use the rest of their magic for keeping their manes and tails wavy. And I'm not gonna lie, that one does make me laugh. LOL But in all seriousness, considering how balanced Equestria seems to be in everyday life, you'd think that Celestia and Luna are doing something right to keep it all running smoothly, right? That is, if there isn't some big thing going on like when Discord was a troublemaker, or Tirek, Chrysalis, or whatever, then everyday life in this country seems to run pretty well, no? And since a ruler has a lot of responsibility, I'd like to think that Celestia and Luna have other pressing things to tend to, since dealing with matters all around the country seems to be a princess's main shtick. I mean, just because we don't see them, doesn't mean they're not still doing things to run the country. Plus, I've heard others argue things like, why don't Celestia and Luna get in there with the fights with all the big bad guys and all that? Why do they have to leave it up to Twilight and her friends to take care of that stuff? Well, as we can recall in the episodes "Return of Harmony" as the pilot episodes of season 2, Celestia clearly states that she and Luna are no longer connected to the Elements of Harmony, so it would make sense that they'd have to rely on Twilight and her friends, since they became the new wielders of the Elements. And not only that, they also embody the Elements. So either way, it seems that the two regal sisters have no choice but to go to the Mane 6 for so much, and it wasn't by their choosing anyway, somehow fate had it work out that way for all of them, and from what I see from everyone, they're all just trying to make the best of it how they can. Plus, Celestia and Luna aren't the main characters, it's Twilight and her friends, and they do get A LOT of screen time, considering it's been mainly their story together. And let's not forget, when the sisters were connected to the Elements, they wielded them just as well as the Mane 6 did; we see that in the pilot episodes of season 4, "Princess Twilight Sparkle," when they locked up Discord for the first time in a flashback. I think it's very well established that these two princesses have a lot of wisdom and power to go around, but we'd like to see more of it...it's not that I don't believe they are powerful, but we need to see more of it, that's all, and when we're not seeing them in the show, I think it's safe to assume that they're off doing other things to tend to royal duties. Not to mention, for not being connected to the Elements anymore, Celestia and Luna are still willing to do whatever they can to help out in a crisis. (MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE SHOW ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO THE SEASON 4 FINALE) What about the time where Celestia, Luna, and Cadence all decided as a group sacrifice, that they should rid themselves of their Alicorn magic before Tirek can come and take it, and they transfer it to Twilight? I'd say that not only was it a great sacrifice of their powers, but also of their lives; without their magic, they're honestly lucky that Tirek didn't try to kill them or anything. (Well, that and plus it's a kids' show, nobody dies in a kids' show, especially one like this, so they were saved by the writers, too. LOL) Bottom line is, these are princesses who definitely didn't wait around for a prince or knight in shining armor to save them, nor did they run with all their Alicorn magic intact to them, they transferred it to someone else for the time being and stayed behind, unguarded, waiting for the arrival of Tirek where everything they were was on the line, of their own free wills. That's definitely something they can all be proud of, so yes, Celestia and Luna deserve some credit alongside Twilight and Cadence for what efforts they try to put in to run and protect their country. :)

She pretty much is queen, I just think they use a different term for the same position. Or maybe after taking over Equestria, Celestia declined to accept that title in fear that the ponies, who had already survived extremely turbulent times, would see her as a dictator making a clutch at power, so for political reasons, kept the term 'princess', and it kinda stuck.

Maybe but after let's say 200+ years enough time would pass allowing the retirement from princess to queen and considering like I said with four princesses some reorganisation of names might be in order, plus I'm getting the feeling from the rate Celestia pushed though twilight in seasons 1 to 3 something may be happening to her to get a loyal heir onto the thrown in some years time, finally we know twilight ages normally so unless creating princesses is how Celestia spends the decades it seems strange to make both cadence and twilight alicorns unless to establish actual royal lines

cannedcream and DCP brony - You both have interesting theories, but I think the Nostalgia Critic said it best in his editorial called, "Why all the princess hate?" The REAL reason why Hasbro made Celestia a princess instead of a queen is because it's a helluva a lot more marketable to sell little girls the fantasy of being a princess, as Disney has proven for years. Yet, if you look at the stereotype about queens, most of them are evil and/or ugly as fucking sin. Now don't get me wrong, I'm fully aware that queens and princesses actually do exist, and not all of them fit into that stereotype. However, when it comes to the tv shows and movies, it seems like most iconic queen figures are either background characters, or they're mainly evil vain people trying to kill the innocent princess. Hell, my little pony friendship is magic kind of did the same thing. You guys remember Queen Chrysallis? Why is it that she's a queen and she's evil? While Celestia and Luna rule over equestria, yet they're only called princesses? Look, I'm not going to pretend that I'm an expert when it comes to women, and I apologize if what I'm about to say sounds sexist, but this is just me stating a few observations okay. In a lot of ways, Nostalgia Critic was right in many of his assessments. A lot of women love the idea of having power, but they don't want too much power to run things because a part of them wants to be taken care of by a prince charming kind of figure. Whereas most men, they want to have all the power because they want to be the guy in charge. Granted, I know not all women and men fit into that stereotype, as I'm sure there's a few that are different. However, let's be honest. You both know that there are women out there that are like that. And most of that stems from the idea that we're programmed since childhood to think of men as the providers, while women are the nurturers. Granted, we've made strides to eliminate that stereotype over the years, but to say that stereotype doesn't exist even in today's era is a bit naive. Personally, this is one of the reasons why I loved the animated Disney film, Frozen. It showed a great female protagonist in Elsa, who was not only beautiful and kind, but she was also a freaking queen. She was in a position of power, which shows little girls that you can still have a good heart and be pretty, while being the one with the power. (Warning: Spoiler Alert. If you haven't seen frozen, then please skip this paragraph) Plus, Elsa didn't end up with a guy at the end of the film, and that made her character a bit more interesting if you want me to be honest. She found happiness by embracing who she really was, and because of the love of her sister. It had nothing to do with her finding a man; hence showing little girls that you don't need to be with a guy to be happy. You can be happy by being who you are, and it's okay to have a position of power. Granted, I'm not going to sit here and say that "Frozen" was the best animated film of all time because it wasn't. However, Elsa is arguably the greatest disney heroine ever conceived for all the reasons I stated. Granted, I know Celestia acts more like a Queen than she does a Princess, but I think the main reason why Hasbro will never allow her to be called a queen because it's more marketable that way...and that's kind of sad if you ask me.

I have an idea that I would love to see expanded on, what if the "mental breaks" of the mane 6 changed them for the worse? What if Twilight wasn't forgiven by Celestia? What if Pinkie Pie went completely bonkers? Rarity never recovered from either Green Isn't Your Color or the runway show with the bad Gala dresses? Rainbow Dash didn't get over her fright of not winning, Fluttershy staying aggressive, and even the elements not healing Luna. Oh dear...never mind. I can already imagine this.

The comics actually show exactly what Celestia does on a day to day basis. Granted Luna was in charge during that time because of a bet the sisters made, but the point is Celestia's day is strictly scheduled right down to the minute!

I think Celestia does run her country pretty smoothly and that fans shouldn't think she's lazy. Luna works during the night and manages conflicts during her shift and celestia does the same, but with Twilight now managing most of these events Celestia has less to do/worry about. I think they should dedicate an episode just to Celestia and show her daily life as the ruler of a highly populated country then fans can finally see she actually has a purpose.

Hi Candid, Did I already explain the etymology of the word "mayor" here? I probably did, or on some other video of yours. Well, if you look up the French medieval origin of the word, you will see that it basically meant the dude who ran the lands around kings' houses. I don't know exactly what that means, but our "mayor" comes from "majordomo", literally "big house". They way I interpret this etymology is that a mayor, in the times when princes and princesses ruled countries, was either a lord who owned his lord's lands (in the subordinate way that feudal nobles who were under other nobles "owned" lands), or he was simply the dude that managed a lord's stuff (castles, etc. Paris, for example, had a mayor). So as it concerns Mayor Mare, if we follow the lead of princesses ruling and assume that Equestria works by medieval rules, her authority and responsibility would not be contradicted by Twilight's coronation (properly called "creation" because a new office was invented). Either Mayor Mare owns the land around Canterlot and Twilight is now in a new rank above her as the "Princess of Friendship", whatever that is, or she simply manages Princess Celestia's stuff, including Ponyville, and a new Lady above her makes even less of a difference. Mayor Mare is like a head butler: it doesn't matter how the deed changes hands, she never owns the house. Perhaps more precisely she is like a tenant: she has possession of the house, and it doesn't really affect her authority to move the furniture who the landlord is or who the president and congress are that are lords over the landlord. In any case, as I tried to hint at, Twilight rules over a realm called "Friendship"--what even is that? So basically her zone of authority does not even overlap with Mayor Mare's--unless the mayor issues a law about friendship, I guess. Now, does Equestria even work by laws? Do the princesses legislate, or is it all just "lettre de cachet"? Well, shit if it is!

Question: why is it almost always apple buck season? Apple jack seems to always have apple trees to buck. Ponies control nature and earth ponies are in tuned with nature. Maybe thay have to make there own artificial seasons and maybe fruit and plant mature faster and have multiple seasons a year. we know from apple buck season she would normally harvest in a matter of a few days. thoughts?

You seem to be describing a system similar to Great Britain: a figurehead, hereditary monarch with a democratically elected ministry. Such a constitutional monarchy would make sense given that, I think, Celestia and Luna had to merge elements of the three tribes: hereditary rule by the Unicorns, militaristic hierarchy by the Pegasi, and democracy by the Earth Ponies.
