Also, I'm curious, what are some of the goals you guys would have, where you shift goals after? Are you driven by specific numbers, ranking accomplishment, is there a specific age where powerlifting won't be a top focus, or simply process driven with no restrictions for the rest of your life? Label the responses 1 and 2 if you can, as I'm curious to see it all.

1. Did you ever save anything for the swim back? Do you enjoy Vinland Saga? 2. My goals are about happiness and fulfillment and less about numbers. I saw it in a book review on Lana Blakely's channel. Mossy Bottom is another channel that has inspired me to use my finite time working toward something less number oriented and more focused on fulfillment. I seek Vinland on Earth. "Far, far to the west, across the sea... There is a place called Vinland. It's warm and fertile. It's a far away land free from slavery and war. What do you say? Come live with us there someday." I'm happy with that number, but years of focusing on the benching, have left me with a somewhat unbalanced physique. My focus now is to maintain a 170 kg benc, while getting everything else stronger. Also moving away a big from purely focusing on 1 rep maxes, and more on volume/conditioning.

The additional muscle mass gained from squats and deads will, in my estimation, not be enough to make up for the significantly lower amount of near-max benching (I used to bench 5 times a week, for a total of about 50 lifts per workout, with 10 of those lifts being above 85%) and almost daily tricep work.

I saw Jonnie Candito at my local grocery store in Ohio yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him by asking for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like six gallons of milk in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I'd resigned to the prospect of never being strong again. Fast forward to now; I have a family, career, beautiful house and life; powerlifting is back on the menu. I am training with the intention of a podium spot at USAPL nationals in open 100kg; though I'm 38 soon, and have a very busy life outside of lifting. I have no misgivings. I look longingly at guys ascending in their 20s, feeling like I've squandered a valuable opportunity that I'll never get back. However, it simultaneously fills me with pride, to see young people so dedicated and disciplined, and drives me on with further conviction. We'll see what the future has in store, but it sounds like you're making a sound call on your end. Seeing super jacked Jonnie again would be cool. Honestly his legs don’t even need extra training- they’re already huge. If he brings up his delts and chest I think he could look really solid. IMO neutral grip weighted pull ups is the best of both worlds for back and arm development with minimal risk of bicep tears

@jonm.6782 жыл бұрын
@Adam Swink because at the bottom of the chin up the bicep can get overextended past just full extension of the elbow. This risk isn’t nearly as high on rowing movements for example because for the most part you aren’t pull extending and flexing a supinated bicep in most rows. Note; I said most, not all
@jonm.6782 жыл бұрын
@Adam Swink assuming full ROM probably. Because in a chin up you’re holding up your entire bodyweight- granted not all of that pressure is on the bicep but a lot of it is. With a curl you’re just fighting the weight of the dumbbell- which assuming you aren’t ego lifting will definitely be significantly lighter thus have less risk for tears in the stretched position.

Seems like you're giving yourself a lot more freedom to do what you want to do in all areas, I think you'll hit a mental health PR that way!

Idk about "full range of motion" if the scapula stay depressed and the elbows stay bent at the bottom. I recommend hanging scapula depressions with straps/dip belt to work this last range of motion most people avoid. Working up to your own body weight on the belt for 3 sets of 30 should be enough to feel confident in exploding from the dead hang. An explosive scapula depression will actually help you move more weight from the dead hang as it starts the inertia before the elbows begin to bend. Also weighted hanging scapula depressions will cause permanent mobility adaptations to the shoulders.

always a good watch, but whenever he says "alot more content coming" i know that means we will see ya in 18 months, lol

Some people may not like it but switching up your training switching between equipped and raw lifting can be much more enjoyable. It becomes entirely different and different goals/training. I like to switch every ~18 months

You should do a street lifting competition in the future

Hell yeah man, a 250 kg, ATG, HB squat is going to be awesome. What will your ATG FS goal going to be after you achieve the 250? A 200-230 FS? That would be awesome too! Good luck!!

I didn’t compete until my 30s 🤷🏻♂️ I’m out here chasing old guy records 😆

If you haven't properly tried it, I highly recommend giving the larsen press variations a try. It's hard to describe, but it genuinely feels better than a bench press. It also got me some pretty juicy strength and hypertrophy progress.

If you're like me and you've just been a serious lifter all your life around your early 30s you start thirsting for competition. I'm 34 and I have just now set my goal of competing in local powerlifting. I don't believe I'm going to hit the meet and push the highest weight or get the highest numbers but it would just feel good to compete in something. I'm going to say this to the younger crowd who is pushing really hard right now. Myself and most of the men I know who are in their early 30s have noticed they are generally stronger than they were when they were younger. Yes it's true sometimes it's harder to put up the numbers you did when you were in your late 20s and you could recover very fast but you are going to notice that your strength and power lasts longer. Maybe it's just me and the guys I train with but I haven't met a guy over 33 who hasn't told me that he's been a better lifter at an older age. Something about the discipline just changes everything changes especially if you are having kids which I did so that change came along with it too.

I also dropped powerlifting. I did it just after exiting junior. Partly because I hate benching and partly because I can't be arsed to actually compete.. Now I alternate ATG squats and deadlifts, 2 sessions of each per week and I do The Press every session. I have more time and energy for doing some pumping too and I notice the results

Smart choice to start dumbbell pressing instead, it allows for a greater range of motion, it's easier on the shoulders and prevents muscular imbalances. I'd dare to say that dumbbells are superior to a barbell in all upper body exercises.

More weight more impressive. Low-bar/high-bar, sumo/conventional don’t care. Don’t care how much Clarence Kennedy power snatches compared to snatch. Just do your best, and that’s what’s up. Glad you’re feeling refreshed and more motivated! Keep the content coming.

I just turned 28 and feeling the strongest I've ever been and have no indication of slowing down before 35. I also only started lifting at 22 though.

As an old person lifter that got into the sport late, I'm still doing all the PL stuff, but I don't really prioritize it. I'm not going to worlds. I just train a few times a week for fun and can it a day lol
