My Candle has a frosted look - Why?
Your candle is 100% Natural Soy - It's a Soy thing :)
The frosted look in 100% Natural Soy Candles is very common and has many names. Some of those names are indicative of their specific traits: "cauliflower bursts", "Frosted", "Snowflakes", "star-bursts", These are some of the names they are described by. Frosting has no effect on the burn quality of your candle, and may be more extreme in darker colored candles.
Many Customers look for these frosted bits as it is a natural characteristic of 100% Natural Soy candles. You know for a fact if it has these bursts it isn't a soy blend or paraffin wax, it is that Natural Soy we all have grown to love :)
Since our candles are All Natural Soy and very Eco-Friendly we do not add harmful chemicals and preservatives that would normally prevent frosting. We do try to minimize the appearance of frosting by switching the pouring temperature and changing the environment the candles cool in. It is practically impossible to have a 100% Natural Soy candle without frosting.
Temperature shifts can create frosting after the fact as well, so going from a hot delivery truck to an air-conditioned home or a cold delivery truck to a nice and cozy home can definitely affect the candle. It's just one of those things we grow to love about our 100% Natural Soy candles!

Wrapping a cloth round the cooling candle helps. It stops the edges cooling faster so less / no frosting!! Works for me :) and any frosting I do get is very minimal and a regular hairdryer does the job.

Its for insulation so it cools more slowly. Dampening it would lessen the effect. I don't recommend that.

Hello! Thank you for this video. It is very helpful to me. One question: after you are able to eliminate the frosting after using the heat gun, does the frosting generally come back after time? I tried your method on some 464 soy candles that had the frosting issue, and so far after 2 days the frosting hasn't come back. I'm wondering if I will need to explain to my candle retailers of the probability of this happening again. Does this usually fix the issue for good? Thank you!

Very helpful video! The more I'm experimenting with candle making (as a newbie), I'm wondering if dying the wax can contribute to frosting, especially using liquid dye. Tim, what do you think? It seems that the more drops of liquid dye I use, the more frosting I end up having in my candles. I'm thinking about trying dye blocks next. In your opinion, do you think dye blocks would lead to less frosting? Not sure what the difference is between the two types of dye other than one is liquid and one is a solid, but I would love to know if using one would lead to a better-looking candle with less (or no) frosting. So I just tried to heat up candles that had frosted with a hair dryer but I started to hear the glass crack and when I looked at it I saw small white cracks that didnt fully crack the glass but I didnt want to continue to use heat because I got scared. So any alternatives to heating up the glasses this way??

The easiest way to figure the volume for a specific jar is to weigh the jar while it is empty, then fill it with water and weigh it again, subtract the difference...and that is the volume of that jar. So if you weigh it empty and it weighs 10-ounces and then you weigh it with water and it weighs 20-ounces... that jar will need 10-ounces of wax :)

Not sure if this has been asked already so apologies if it has. I have shrink/frost issues quite often and the heat gun works well but I’m curious as to how companies like Yankee Candle avoid these issues. I’ve bought several premium candles and put them through temperature tests and I’m yet to get any shrinkage or frosting with the Yankee candles I’ve bought where as a great deal of mine have changed during the same tests. Do they use a certain type of wax or is it a case of their own wax mixture that’s not shared? Thanks

Thank you for the video. I have tried this technique myself, but wondered if the heat gun temperature was too high because sometimes it doesn't work. Could be that I didn't do it all the way around on the bigger jars, so I will definitely make sure I do that. What temperature do you recommend? Another issue with the heat gun is the fan. Do you think it blows air back into the wax therefore causing more bubbles to form?

I've never really measured the temperature, the heat guns usually only have one setting, so the temperature is going to be what it's going to be. Good question though! As far as introducing more air, I've never noticed this to be a problem. I think just blowing over the top of the candle won't aerate it enough that it would cause an issue.

I’m new at candle making , and would very much like to make a white candle but it always turn half transparant semi white ish. I have tried melting 100% paraffin (finshed, store bought) but they turned out half transp. i also tried a mixture of stearin/parafin from my crafts store and added white pigment at 85° (took it off the stove) but it didn’t work. what am i doing wrong?

I don't have a heat gun but I was told that I can use a hair dryer and it would work just as good. However I noticed even when I heat it up like you are doing in this video..... a lot of the times the frosting will come right back. I'm not sure if I'm doing something incorrectly or what but I seem to be doing it just like you.

A hair dryer really isn't going to give you the amount of heat that you need. Most likely what the hair dryer is doing is heating the outer wax just enough that you cant see the frosting, but is not heating it deep enough to release the air bubbles to the top.

Have you ever tried cooling in a more controlled area? I was thinking of pouring a batch of small 4oz candles and heating my oven while pouring. Then turning off the oven and placing a tray of poured candles in the oven. The though being if I can get them in there with it around 100 degrees Fahrenheit with oven off and close the door the air inside and thus the candle should cool more slowly than in the 72 or so house air. Also what do you think about doing similar to remove or fix a frosted candle. Placing frosted candles of same scent and in same jars in oven on a cookie sheet and heating oven till I see the melt like in your heat gun fix then turning oven off leaving them to cool slowly inside. I was curious of your thoughts on this. Thanks

I tried that, placing the candles in the oven. The tops ended up looking very dry. Similar to how food does if kept in the oven. It didnt affect how the candle burned 🤷🏽‍♀️

Good Question! You're only really remelting a tiny portion of the finished candle. So once it sets back up, you'll be good to go!

Hi Tim, great video - in your opinion what kind of soy wax is best for adhesion to containers? I am having trouble with this as using clear jars. I'm in the UK and I'm just about to try some different waxes - Nature C3 and Ecosoya Q210 - do you have experience with these? If so are either any good when it comes to adhesion? Thank you!

Those both offer great glass adhesion. I personally think 464 offers the best glass adhesion but C3 and Q210 actually hold color better, so it's a bit of a trade off. /They all would be great though.

Try pouring through a heated metal funnel. That way, you can keep it off the sides of the container. You can also heat in the microwave as it sets. You can also pour into solid, opaque containers, thus crystallization won't be a problem.

Hi Tim. I am having issues with my soy candles having a rough texture after each burn. Is this normal? When I initially pour them they cure fine and are smooth on top and they burn evenly every time but when I blow them out and they cool down they have a texture at the top. Is there a way I can prevent this? I use GB-464 soy wax. I pay attention to the temperature as I add fragrance and when I pour into my tins. Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It's perfectly normal, and nothing you can do to prevent it. We take so much care to heat them and pour them and let them cool at just the right temperature to reduce appearance issues, but then when they are lit they get up to a few hundred degrees and cool unevenly, so the wonky appearance that results is just soy wax being soy wax.

Thanks for this video! I have a question. I've used American Soy Organic's 100% Midwest Soy Wax. Really like the people that sell it, but dang I cannot get this wax to not form bubbles. It frost right away. And... It frosts days later. I can hit it with the heat gun, and it looks great. Frosting comes back within minutes to days. Have you tried this wax? I have learned to detest it! I use 464 soy and I have zero problems when heat to 185 and add fragrance and dye, and I pour at 100 degrees. I'm hoping you may have insight into the American Soy Organic's product since I have to suffer through another 100# of it. Will never buy it again.

I've never used it in my product line. All I've ever used was a 10 pound bag that American Soy Organics sent me for an unboxing and product demo. The few candles that I've made with it turned out fine. I heated to 150 and poured at 110. But in total I've made maybe 5 candles with it, so not enough experience. Worst case scenario you could check out some of the destash groups on Facebook. May not get your full return on it, but some one would likely buy it from you.

Thus far I've used 464 and I get perfect, bubble-less, smooth-topped candles heating that to 155 and pouring at 100. I was just going to ask this. I finally broke down and tried the GB 464 and it has a huge issue with frosting no matter what I do. I think I’m going to stick with Ecosoya. Much higher quality of wax in my opinion.

Sadly no. The smaller size of wax melts makes it even harder to regulate an even cooling temperature, which makes them more susceptible to frosting. Since wax tarts and melts are almost always made in plastic molds or containers, the heat gun would melt the plastic long before the frosting was fixed.

Ecosoya is an amazing wax. I almost never have an issue with frosting. I make wax melts with it too. My wax melts aren’t in the plastic containers though. But you can get a certain type of Ecosoya if you use the clamshells.

When I try to use the heat gun to fix mine it doesn't. It comes out the same way. I tried playing with the temperatures when I pour I've done everything I can think of I don't understand why it won't stop.

Christina Faye I would suggest trying Ecosoya wax. It’s more expensive but you can get it in a 10 pound batch to test. It almost never frosts. It does take sometime to learn the curve of what will work in your setting. For me, I heat to 185, add dye right away. Add fragrance at 150 and pour at 135. But your environment will be different so your temps may be too. It is a really great wax and I almost never have frosting.

Some waxes are just most prone to frosting than others. Right now, many candlemakers have been complaining about Golden Brands for the last couple of months saying it has been very bad with frosting issues.
