Hi, Julio CD 76, you are absolutely right. Everyone wants to improve his English. Let me correct your tiny mistake: ...there are a lot of .... My next note: In my opinion, Christian deserves more personal comment so I would express your idea like this: Christian, there are a lot of teachers on KZbin, but your honesty and sincerity are what make you one of the best teachers. Or: Christian, there are a lot of teachers on KZbin your honesty and sincerity are what make you one of the best, though. My final remark: I really will be thankful to everyone, who helps me to improve my Englisch by correcting my comments whenever and wherever you come across to them.

Hi there. I’m an English teacher and I’m Italian. I have been studying English since I was 5 and despite having spent only 5 months in the UK in my whole life, I have a British accent that is a mix between a midland accent and Received Pronunciation. I don’t know why I completely lost my Italian accent, it just happened. I was told to be “weird” (in a good way) several times, so I guess you’re right, I’m an exception. What I try to teach my students is that correct pronunciation is only crucial in case there is a danger of misunderstanding and I was trained how to teach it by a wonderful teacher. I do agree that it’s hard to teach word stress, as it is usually taught in isolation, which is why I always teach pronunciation either of single sounds or of words in the chain of speech. Thank you very much for this, I am currently supporting your free education efforts and I do appreciate what you’re doing, you are source of inspiration. Ilaria from Italy

Brilliant! It’s incredible to think about how many hours and how much money must be wasted on useless language lessons, when 99% of students just need to be able to communicate. And the more they communicate the better they will become at it.

Yes, communication is the prime reason for learning a language. I have gathered from all the people that teach, is to learn the equivalent of what is interesting and appeals to yourself. It's a waste of time to learn what is boring to you. !

Wow. You make it sound so easy when you talk about consistency and vowel sounds. That is so much easier said than done. Having been taught British pronunciation in school for 8 years, university for anther 2, having spent 12 months in Australia as a young adult and having consumed American music, TV and American culture in general for a lifetime (40years) that accomplishment is impossible. However, I'll just keep on chattering away anyway. Love the channel!

I am pretty clear when I speak, and I enjoy speaking English so much that even I started to pick up regional fancy habits - which you might regard as bad, such as dropping the t sound - in my ‘relaxed speech’. I studied phonetics and I am aware of nearly every sound, I can recognise the pronunciation of a word by checking the IPA transcription, without even listening to it. I just can’t get rid of my Italian accent. Sometimes it feels bad, it sounds quirky and unusual, but it’s so embedded, it’s just part of my personality. I have always tried to curb this facet of myself, but your video inspires me to treasure it as part of my diversity. I also feel sometimes that my voice sounds a bit overconfident to English people. As an Italian person, I emphasise words, I want to be compelling when I speak, I want to channel other’s attention - while most English people speak as if the words accidentally fell out. This is the reason why they are difficult to understand in the beginning. The randomness of native speaker’s body language is almost unbearable for someone who is used to gesturing through words while speaking.

These "facts" are cherry picked.Any good dialect coach can bring you to a very high accuracy of native pronunciation in a couple of months. how else do you think actors in some movies can acquire a very accurate foreign accent in just a couple of months of training with a top dialect coach?Otherwise the whole dialect coach job would be just a scam, they wouldn't exist if it was not possible.

I''ve just realized of how many English teachers for Spanish speakers didn't fall in love with... Spanish, because when teaching about the stress, they fail to point out the difference of function it has in both languages, and I mean that even when they tell you the stressing is used to shift the focus within a phrase, they often doesn't seem to consciously notice how it's being used in Spanish, which leads to the difficulty to grasp the difference... and in turn to the importance of the aspiration in between words. In Spanish you speak without need to pause or aspire between words, because the stress is devoted exclusively to ensure the listener to make up the words separation intended by the speaker, even for sequences of syllables/phonemes that wouldn't be unique and could convey different words should they weren't stressed or if they were wrongly stressed (this is the leit motif for several jokes), and this happens automatically and unconsciously because it follows patterns disregarding the grammar and the semantics, akin the aspiration in English , and it's so internalized and natural that when we learn English we give for granted the same applies to it, and we fail to understand spoken English because of this as well.
