As an Egyptian, I really really loved this episode. I also studied Architecture and we HAD to study a lot about the Ancient Egypt and mummification as it reflected so much on the architecture of the tombs and pyramids. I will try to visit in December and if it opened I PROMISE I will make special videos for you. I would love to take you around there because I studied a lot about Egyptian history and would love to share it with you :D On another note though, could you please make a dark history about circumcision for women?? it was very popular in my grand parents era , wonder what was that all about!

I'm Egyptian too, I also agree. In my whole family, I'm the only girl that hasn't gotten circumcision and it's sad. No one knows that I didn't get it except my grandma. My parents told my grandma that they didn't want it to get done on me and that it's illegal in America and that I wouldn't be able to enter America if I had it done to make her not talk about it again. Everyone still gets it done in my family, its not stopping. I would love for Bailey to talk about it

Not defending their actions in the least, I’m pretty sure I mouthed “what the f**k” more in this episode than in any other ….. but that being said, I don’t think we can expect too much from people who were willing to pickle their own countrymen in bogs when supplies and profits dwindled ….. this isn’t even close to the only ….. interesting (and questionable) practice of the time .…. this, drawing and quartering, heads on the Tower ….. I mean, their War of the Roses inspired Game of Thrones, so that should say something ….. but they know how to properly hold a teacup and are masters at all other forms of table etiquette and polite conversation ….. this other stuff, like grave robbing and regicide, is politics, and politics, we all know, are gauche, and are not appropriate topics of conversation for polite society.

My favorite fact about the Egyptomania craze: When British artist Edward Burne-Jones discovered in the late 1800s that the "mummy brown" paint he had been using was genuinely made with corpses, he took all his remaining supply of the colour and held a full funeral service for it in his backyard, because it had once been people, who deserved to be respected in death. He never used the pigment again.

Yes, I have thought about mummies. I learned about mummified bodies when I studied forensic anthropology 😂 Thry also don’t scare me, because if they were alive and ran after you it would be so easy to just pull off their limbs 😂 same with a skeleton, what are they gonna do? Their bones aren’t even stuck to each other 😂 mummification CAN happen on it’s own too, in the right condition

People do this today with their placentas. They dehydrate them and crush them up and capsule them to ingest. Though it was proven to have no nutritional benefits, people still do it anyways 🤷🏻‍♀️ kinda weird but to each their own I guess 😅

Either in the late 90s or early 2000s, I saw some mummy movie where a pharaoh was being "mummified" while he was still alive. Still haunts me to this day. I wish I could remember the name of the movie

Bitumen is just the old name for asphalt. It's a crude oil that comes from heating a shiny black rock (asphaltite or gilsonite).

Goosebumps is the reason for my mummy fascination, followed by the Brendan Frasier Mummy Movie. I now work in a museum and teach kids about mummies for a living! The Brits were ridiculous with mummies back in the Victorian days

sometimes I worry about whatever school district Bailey went to when she says she never knew or learned about something. But then again, I'm happy she's teaching others who may also have had a craptacular education.

OH BAILEY!!! Do a deep dive into the history of embalming next!!! I’m super hype to hear your take on the prevalence of embalming in the US after the American Civil War and the continuance of it by the sometimes-predatory funeral industry!!!!!

This was one of my absolute favorite dark history’s. This was something that I also had never heard of before. Super gross, but also super cool. I always wondered why there were such gaps in ancient Egyptian history, and how it could be we knew who some pharroh’s were, but not all of them. So thanks for this one it was great ☺️❤

So the "salt" they used it actually called Natron and it more like a salt/baking soda combo, and not only did they leave you covered in it for a few days to dry out the body; the inside of the body after the organs were removed was also packed with Natron. Also funny side note, the person that would cut open the body was ritualistically chased out of the room after they made the cut. The other priests in the room would toss stones and shout curses at the one that made the cut, after they were gone the ritual would carry on like "well their open now anyways... might as well take all those organs out now..." Mummification rites in Ancient Egypt where WILD. The process of mummification was pretty standard to other cultures that also did mummification, but the religious rituals around the Egyptian Practice was very interesting as it was both required to go on to the afterlife, but some of the steps were also considered taboo; so the priests made a show of fake shaming the people that did the taboo parts of the ritual for "defiling" the body in a whole song and dance way. Another random fact about uses for Mummies was to make a certain colour of brown paint that was literally called "Mummy Brown." It required the resin from the mummy to make the brown pigment, and was used until like the late 1800's.
