I think art belongs to the countries it originated from unless the creators are alive so they can do whatever they want with it. Also, the Boston heist seems like it was a "we did it to prove we can do it" kind of thing. At least, that's my supposition
@ummnothanks...666
@ummnothanks...666 Жыл бұрын
I agree, mostly, but what if the country it originated from is unstable or war-torn? What if they want it back so they can destroy it or hide it because they don't like what it says about their country's history? Some things should obviously be returned because everyone knows they were stolen, like the Elgin marbles, but how safe is it for the Rosetta Stone to be returned to Egypt when the Cairo Museum was looted and parts of it were burnt down during the 2011 revolution? It's a really difficult, nuanced, conversation.
@chloebennett425
@chloebennett425 Ай бұрын
And this is why Vincenzo Peruggia stole the Monna Lisa. I'm Italian and we have a feud with France about the painting, it's more of like a meme nowadays but there's also a "song" that was made when Italy won the football World Cup (FIFA) in 2006 specifically against France (that came in 2nd) that chants "now give us back our Gioconda because we're the World's Champions, it's ours, it's ours, we want the Gioconda" - it's kinda funny and it's called "Materazzi ha fatto gol" if you're interested lol (If you didn't know, Gioconda is the alternative name to the Monna Lisa) Ok so basically Vincenzo Peruggia stole it thinking it was property of Italy and therefore wanted to gift it back to the country. I have to say, we're bittersweet about France having such a masterpiece, because how it became their property isn't that clear. It's controversial because Leonardo spent years painting and repainting it in Florence, Italy, but he took it along with him when he got to France. It's believed that he either gave it as a gift to King François I or he sold it to him, but since there's no real record of how exactly it got into French's hands, we don't trust it was necessarily obtained in a nice way. Most Italians consider the Monna Lisa ours (which is technically right, the Monna Lisa is an Italian painting from an Italian artist) and claim it was stolen, reality is that it's not likely but there's nothing factual to stop this feud. Anyway I was in France literally last week in vacation and we went to the Louvre, whisper-singing that chant when in front of the Monna Lisa because it's funny, but there's people actually believing that it should be returned. Vincenzo Peruggia is surely a hero in the eyes of lots of Italians, he was wrong but trying to do what he thought was right

I think there is a difference between art and antiquities. Art from an artist may be sold and resold, but antiquities should not ever be sold. All the stuff stolen from Egypt is horrible, but it is true from so many countries.

I work in a museum and I would like to say that most museums have some type of insurance policy that covers damage or possible thievery. With the Bert and Ernie art heist. I would suggest looking into if the museum had an insurance policy on the art and if so who could possibly gain from that insurance policy. Bert and Ernie could have been hired to steal the art but never actually wanted the items for themselves. It always makes sense to follow where the money would go. When it comes down to the question of where should artifacts live? That's a difficult question. I would argue that items should go wherever they can be preserved and protected for the most amount of people do appreciate. If museums in institutions would give legal and verbal ownership of items to their place of origin that would be awesome. But where those items live can be preserved in the most effective way should be where they reside or physically live. In my mind is the most ideal compromise.

Ugh. My favorite uploads!! You just made my day ❤ They look like Mario and Luigi too 😂 I think as long as art is in a safe place it’s okay. Art was made to be desired and admired. If pieces from certain parts of the world get traded to other museums it’s okay. If everything stayed in one space most people wouldn’t be able to admire and appreciate it.
