This video contains product placement from Freewheel.com. Simon, a self confessed aero evangelist, says the aero road bike is not dead and if you want to know why, you only have to look at a bike like this, the Cannondale SystemSix.
If you’ve been paying attention to bike releases of late, then you may well think the aero bike is dead. Many of the biggest brands have released do-it-all models, which are said to be equal parts aero bullet and lightweight climbing machine.
So, in 2021, how does the SystemSix stack up against the latest generation of go-fast race bikes? Well, it’s still incredibly fast, and I’d argue many bikes are still playing catch-up. Intrigued or enraged by Simon's opinion? Then watch on and don't forget to tell us what you think in the comments!

Weight isn't totally irrelevant (a 13kg race bike will be slower than a 7kg one), but it's not the biggest factor. For a 70kg rider on a 7kg bike, a 1kg weight saving is a negligible weight difference and will make a tiny difference up hill, but on the flats and downhills it will likely be slower. Having said that, part of people's frustration is likely that to get a 7kg aero bike is a £10k investment which is, frankly, ridiculous.

For those enraged by the added weight of the aero bike I ask this, how many of us (myself included) are carrying an extra 1, 2, 3, + kilograms of weight on our bodies? I know I could lose excess weight to make up for the difference an aero bike vs lightweight climbing bike incurs.

Benefits on the flat roads and small hills is bigger then weight. However, depend on a stage. To the Alps I would prefer Supersix, but for all other stages SystemSix. It just look beasty and great :)

Yeah, aero does beat weight, but it’s really hard to actually prove that an “aero road bike” is actually aero. Companies constantly claim of aero gains when in reality it’s just a bunch of marketing BS. If you want to actually “get aero” learn to ride in a more aerodynamic position, buy a skin suit, and also buy a helmet specifically made for TT events.

@engnelsito

Precisely... Marketing can't make crazy claims regarding weight since everybody has access to a scale, but they can make whatever aero gains claims they want since those are pretty impossible to disprove unless you have access to a wind tunnel... If weight wasn't important at all, pros wouldn't be riding lightweight (and often rim brake) bikes in the hillier stages of the GTs.

I won a Masters national crit championships on a Systemsix - it is very fast on the flat and undulating courses, but i prefer my supersix for hilly road races, simply because its about 1.5kg lighter. In choosing a light weight versus an aero bike, it is also important to consider how heavy you are relative to the bike (e.g. 88kg Conor Dunne is less likely to be disadvantaged riding an 8kg Systemsix compared to 63kg Rigoberto Uran).

I used to ride a very heavy steel bike and didn't really notice the extra weight when climbing hills. The geometry was very favorable, so I was able to put down more power than with the other bike I was riding at the time (the other bike wasn't my size), so it's probably not a fair comparison. Additionally, the heavy steel bike was a tri-fork, so as long as I wasn't riding into a crosswind, there was a significant aero advantage. In fact my only issue with the cheap steel bike was the drivetrain. At around 21-22 mph on the flats, I was running out of gears.

when you are comparing a heavy aero bike to a lighter climbing bike, and the differences on a short climb are seconds, those extra lost seconds still means you got dropped or lost the race. Testing seems to show that, aero depends on the speed and grade of the climb and aero starts to balance equally with weight at around 5%, and the lose as the gradient increases. Dropping water bottles and a saddle bag can offer you a few more seconds on a segment, so yeah, weight does matter.

Regarding the weight I was always obsessed with breaking the limit. I'm riding 61 cm frames. My lightes bike was 2017 Scott Addict SL with Enve 3.4 tubular wheels. Its weight was 6 kg with pedals, cages, comp holder. Last year I made a switch to the reviewed bike, just the champagne color (agree that it this year color it would not be my choice). Now the point. In the area where I'm living 900 m hills around, flat for me is 350 m on 30 km if I'd like to do flats. The hill just needs to my home in 10 km long with 6,5% grade, 550 m elevation. The SistemSix performs the same with its 8 kg as the Scott. The SS is faster on descends, flats and I confirm that is very handy. All personal records have been beaten on the SS. So for me the aero works. For the pro's on the a 3 week race having 1 kg more can be victory desiding factor, but I'm not qualified to judge this. I can only share my experience with a bike with 2 kg difference.

To be honest, the debate is less about weight and more about what you get for your $13,000. If I'm paying that much for a damn bicycle I better see the manufacturers going the extra mile; I should be getting aero AND light. I should be getting body-specific geometry. I should be getting custom paint colors. I get that hobbies are expensive, but at least a Ferrari is a cathartically different experience than a Corvette for costing an order of magnitude more. I can't say the same about bicycles.

Assuming that you have lightweight wheels (especially rims), and crank/pedals - all of the other weight of the bike is static and is part of the "system weight" which included bike and rider. If the average rider is 72 kg and the light bike weighs 6.8 kg - then they system weight is 78.8 kg. If the bike weighs 8kg then the system weight is 80kg. The additional weight means that the overall system weight is 1.5% heavier. This could cause marginal losses on steep, or long climbs...but the aero bike will be faster in all other sections of a given ride. So while you would do well on a light bike for a hill climb event - the aero bike will be faster in every other scenario. I love my SystemSix!! And you don't need the top spec to take advantage of the aero savings. I have the bottom spec which is the non HiMod frame and components are Ultegra mechanical - it is a fast bike...especially going down hills!!

At 10k, surely you're looking at low to mid 7kg for an aerobike. A smidge under 8kg is something I would expect in the 3k price range. From statistics, there is not denying that an aerobike will reign supreme on the flats and mild to moderate climbs. But there is also something about a lightweight bike being thrown around when you stamp on the pedals out of the saddle going up a climb. Similar thing can be said about the ease at which an aerobike holds its speed on the flats...

Simon, handlebars should be the width of your shoulders and shouldn't have to do with being "more aero" that's only for pro's. So people with wider shoulders should be able to get 44cm, I myself have more narrow shoulders so I choose 38 or 40cm but it has NOTHING to do with aero! I really hatye this notion that people think narrow bars are for aero and not for fit and to bad you guys don't help with this! Aerobikes in it self is also a very niche in the whole industry and for a good reason because lets be honest if you are not racing you don't need to be "aero" you first need to be comfortable and most aerobikes are just not as comfortable as their climbingbike brothers and because of the stupid aerobars a lot harder to work on! Also weight does matter especially on steep short climbs (my aera for example) where you have no advantage with aerobikes, trust me my latest bike is more aero than the one before but I'm slower up the climbs (and that's because I gained some weight). For us normies (so people above 20 BMI) we don't go fast enough to have an aero advantage on climbs!

Why did they outfit it with the Vittoria Rubino Pro? They are around 5 watts slower PER Tire than something like a Continental GP5000 C. Basically that alone takes away the entire Speed advantage it has over the Supersix Evo.
@einundsiebenziger5488
@einundsiebenziger5488 3 жыл бұрын
Please, there is no such thing as "Watts slower"! While speed factors into power, it is still measured in kilometers/miles per hour, not Watts. But you are right that a less-than 20$ tyre does not belong on an almost 10,000$ bike.

It's around 2.9 kg heavier than my 2008 Fuji SL/1 (5.1 kg w/ pedals and bottle cage). This is below UCI limit, but USA Cycling rules don't have a weight limit, just a safety requirement. If I'm climbing @ 1200 VAM, this adds 28.4 joules/meter, or @ 1 meter / 3 seconds, 9.5 watts. If I'm climbing @ 20 kph (6% grade), offsetting this would require a CdA reduction of 0.09, which is close to all of the aerodynamic drag of bike + wheels. So my 13 year old Fuji is in theory faster. Of course much of the Cannondale's excess mass is in the disc brakes, which do nothing for climbing speed, and if pro stage racing results tell anything, don't help with overall race results either (no Grand tour has as yet been won purely on disc brakes).

Tadej Pogacar won the Tour, not a bike. He would have won with a disc bike just as well. Also, yeah, a lighter bike is faster if all you ride is 1200 VAM climbing. Even if all you do is climbing, there has to be some descending or headwind sections, right?
@djconnel
@djconnel 3 жыл бұрын
@@LarsRR Sure, except in hill climbs which are fairly popular, but I've seen no evidence in dry conditions that disc brake riders are dropping rim brake riders. Do rim brake riders crash more? If you don't count Thomas... And honestly don't think many riders spend much time in their lives descending at the limit in the rain.

Rather than bike makers claiming to have made the fastest, lightest, most aero or whatever I’d instead love a bike maker to invest in creating the most reliable, comfortable or easiest to maintain/customise. We’re already at the extreme end of what our technology is capable of (and UCI will allow) so any gains are always going to be tiny (2W here or 0.02seconds there) so focusing on other real world metrics for the people that actually buy the bikes would possibly offer more design, engineering and marketing opportunities.

Totally agree about the weight vs aero argument. As a percentage of (rider+total bike weight) 1kg is naff all. Compare that to the ratio of drag and speed, and boom. My opinion is that it’s about CdA and stiffness and if you need a lighter bike, have a big shit before your ride 😀

If you are racing uphill and have nothing on you or the bike then bike weight makes some difference. For the rest of us that that carry two water bottles, tools, 2x inner tube, bike pump, food, extra clothes it makes no difference. If care about 2 to 3lbs savings between bikes there's cheaper ways to save it for what's in your load bag.

This bike was really easy to assemble kzbin.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.
