Wilderness Expedition: Exploring Woodland Caribou Provincial Park | Documentary

Woodland Caribou Provincial Park has to be one of the world’s premier canoe-tripping destinations. A few years ago, I (Keenan) had the pleasure of paddling through this park with my brother on an ice-off fly-in trip. It was one of the best canoe trips I've ever experienced.
For the past few years my wife Ashley and I have been trying to plan a canoe trip to this unique destination but there always seemed to be something that got in our way, which was usually forest fires!
Over 50% of Woodland Caribou burnt in 2021 and that is on top of all the multiple, previous fires that have taken place over the years.
In the summer of 2022, we were finally able to make our dream a reality by visiting Woodland Caribou provincial park for the better part of two weeks.
This was one of the best canoe trips Ashley and I have ever been on. We were fortunate to experience some truly special and unique moments, including viewing the northern lights and incredible sunsets, witnessing a huge bull moose, and seeing an endangered Woodland Caribou.
This film was done in a slightly different style for us and we really hope you enjoy it. It was a lot of fun to put together. Revisiting the footage from this trip really makes us want to go back. This one hit me on a personal level as I was one of the if not the last person to paddle a big part of the park before the big burn. Great to see you went despite the burn! And the rewards are so worth it. That moose was absolutely insane! I like Ashley’s response ‘this must be the biggest moose in the world!’ Epic reward at the and with the Auroras! How different is it from Wabakimi Provincial Park?

@@donthomas8724 I have only just Scratched the surface of Wabakimi’s wilderness, but I feel every park has its own very unique and distinct feel and look. My first impression of Wabakimi is that is greener and less effected by fires over the years. Wabakimi has a lot more rivers and whitewater then Woodland. The older burns in Woodland are also a part of the magic of the area as the scenery changes lots as you put in the kilometers. So I would say both are equally beautiful in their own way.

This is epic filmmaking and I love the way you told this story. The narration you did in your home cutting to the trip footage was amazing to watch. To paddle into the cave, set up the camera, paddle back out of the cave, then turn around and paddle back into the cave for the video recording shows true dedication to your purpose of presenting this remarkable woodland to many who won't ever see it in person. Well done!!

I don't know how you do it, but you keep moving the bar forward! This was fantastic, I really enjoyed it! Typically, if my wife is in the room with me when I start a KZbin video, she leaves to go do something else. The resilience of nature shines through this video. Although the landscape has changed dramatically since the trip with your brother, you and Ashley saw nature at its best. I have done some fly in fishing trips east of the park nd the forest and lakes were not burned up. Loved this video! My daughter and I did your same route 2x in 2008 and 2012 and even camped at some of the same sites/lakes as you, so it was a real head rush to watch! I'm saddened by the fires, which we've watched intently from afar. But I'm glad to hear how amazing the park still is after being swathed in flames. I'm hopeful to get back there again. Great job with the video all the way around!! I've watched a number of these from other paddlers, most of which tend to be too long and rather boring. Yours is spot-on! 🙂

I really enjoyed listening to the different narratives. Yourself returning to a place you love and Ashley going there for the first time. I've watched a lot of videos on the park and when Ashley described it as another world/planet the one word that comes to mind when I see the burn areas is apocalyptic. Might make it there one day but don' t think I'd do it as a solo trip.

Great video. We had some serious fires down in the BWCA in 2021. Evacuated the whole area for the first time since 1978. We've all heard about fire being part of the forest life cycle, but it's still painful to see all those beautiful trees burned to a crisp. Thanks for this wonderful vid.

Thanks for a wonderful trip down my memory lane. Wonderful work. As I work my way through your videos, I've tried to avoid making comments with everyone. But my wife and I went to an island lodge on Douglas Lake in 2006 and canoed down Onnie creek to Onnie lake. That area is like a peninsula that the owner of the lodge had lobbied hard to be included in the park. Amazingly, we saw a Woodland caribou.... people who had been at the lodge for years had never seen one. In a short portage to hatch lake, we see a large black bear swimming across the lake... my wife just caught a glimpse as she was taking photos of leichen. After 18 years, we plan to go back this summer!

Your best video to date that I’ve watched and Ashley’s best narrative. I planned a Woodland Caribou in the early 90’s and didn’t pull it off. You’ve re-ignited the urge. My best paddles are always the first ones. Repeat trips to the same area are always easier, but for some reason not as rewarding. The exceptions are those in recent burn areas. It’s like another world. As devastating as is appears, it is natural renewal. The regrowth is in someways refreshing. Thank you for the experience. I can’t smell it, but enjoyed seeing it. Beautiful trip! The regrowth would be interesting to see and physically walk through I bet. That natural fire life cycle in a forest is something else. The highlight of caribou and northern lights are on my bucket list too - so lucky! Happy Paddling!

I've watched many many of your films, and love them all. This style of narration was different for sure, but just as enjoyable as any other. The storytelling is VERY enjoyable!
