Last time, we compared Nikon's new top dog to Canon's flagship DSLR with the help of a paparazzi. This week the battlefront has moved to the entry level, as Canon's 1200D (a.k.a. Rebel T5) goes head to head with Nikon's D3300. Which one should you buy? Watch this video to find out.

I've had a Fuji 6500fd bridge camera for a number of years because I couldn't afford a DSLR but wanted a near-dslr experience and I wasn't disappointed. I've just bought an EOS 1200D because it was the best deal for the money including a twin lens pack with both 18-55 and 75-300 for just under £300 from Curry's. The D3200 and D3300 both offer some great features, but for an entry level user I wanted to get more glass for my money :)
@cooloox9 жыл бұрын
Simon Taylor Good decision. There's nothing worse than being limited by focal length. I know we can use our feet, but some things are simply out-of-reach, meaning we still can't get close enough by walking. I don't think you're missing out on features of any great significance. I still believe, from what I've seen, the 1200D takes better images. Every video showing samples from the D3300 shows underexposed shots. That would drive me nuts.
@Elton1310959 жыл бұрын
Ahah true Kartil - I agree fully with you. I bought me a 1200D with 18-55mm 75-300mm lens for $700AU on March (2-3 months ago). My first DSLR camera. I use to have Canon Powershot SX50 HS but the pics were alright. Pics on the 1200D is just way better. I want get upgrade my lens to 18-600+mm lens.

These 2 cameras aren't comparable. The 3300 is more advanced than the 1200. The 1200d is way more entry level than the Nikon. Compare the Nikon to the 600D and then it make sense because they're similar.
@LordsSky9 жыл бұрын
The M6 The 600D is more expensive, it doesn't make sense to compare them at all. The 3300 and 1200 are in the same price bracket.
@TheM69 жыл бұрын
What? They are around 400 euros each, and even if it was a bit more expensive by 10-20 euros more, it make a perfect sense to compare them. I know this because I own a 600D, and my friend have the D3300, there are some differences, but they are more comparable.
@LordsSky9 жыл бұрын
Current lowest UK price for 3300: £259.99. Lowest for the 600D: £364.99. They are not in the same price bracket, and a video showing "Oh hey this camera that is £100 more expensive is way better" is completely useless.
@yes100yessireebob68 жыл бұрын
Wow, a lot of hate for the canon 1200d, don't be swayed by the negative comments, if I show you a picture from both, you CAN NOT tell the differences. The only way to spot differences is to apply professional grade testing, and why would you be using either of these ENTRY level cameras for professional photography? It's just ridiculous fanboy propaganda, if you like the Canon($50 cheaper), buy the Canon. If you like the Nikon($50 more), buy the Nikon. Unless your printing for billboards, or cropping every photo, the mega pixels aren't that important over 12mp. Either camera is perfect for dslr beginners, and both blow away any point and shoot camera. Never buy bridge cameras, they are a waste of money. Just enjoy photography!!!! 🙌

@blackjohnny010 жыл бұрын
Canon! Why? Because it works with manuals and all Canon lenses. Nikon sucks. You want 50mm? You have to buy G, not cheaper D, because AF doesnt work. Yoy want Samyang? Oh, you will not have light measurement... Canon also makes better video.
@samsamrielly10 жыл бұрын
Um, that's partly false loool. All AF Canon lenses have focus motors within the lenses and not the cameras whereas Nikon have focus motors within most of their lenses except the early D models which were designed to be used with camera's at the time which all had focus motors, every Nikon has the motors above the d5000 range because Nikon don't expect people who buy the cheap camera's to purchase their 20 odd year old lenses. Any lens made by Nikon since 1959 will work whereas Canon lenses only work from 1987 which lessens the range significantly. Besides, the G is a better lens than the D. Yeah Canon tend to have better video, I'll give em that but neither company is better than the other.
@blackjohnny010 жыл бұрын
Sam Rielly So half of all Nikon cameras dont work with Nikon D good and cheaper lenses. With manual lenses you dont have light measurement. Thats what you calling working with all Nikon lenses? Nikon just dont give a fuck about their clients. I would never go Nikon again, if i know all that, before i jumped into DSLR. Pentax making the best cameras, but second hand is pretty small in Poland, if we talk about lenses. Canon is ok, have light measurement with all lenses and AF with all Canon lenses. Good video. I dont know about Sony. Probably also good video mode. Maybe a lot of nice manual lenses after Minolta.
@samsamrielly10 жыл бұрын
How about you don't buy D lenses and actually get a decent Nikon e.g. D7000 - D800 and some good modern glass with nanocrystal coat, extra low dispersion and VR. For a lens under £100 can you really ask for light metering or whatever, it is literally Nikons cheapest lens. Yes, Sony is often regarded as having the best video in their camera's due to the extensive experience the company has with such technology, however Sony did make the D800 sensor which has sharper video than any Canon DSLR but unfortunately not in low light capability due to it's 36mp sensor.
@blackjohnny010 жыл бұрын
Sam Rielly Yea, maybe immediately D4. And i will paid for it with air. Lol. I can buy cheap Canon and have no problems. And this video is about D3300 or 1200D. So yea, Canon is just better in this option, because of lenses and video.
@BarnET010 жыл бұрын
You don't get light measurement with samyang lenses on canon either. Just with Pentax. I would pick the Nikon 50mm f1.8g over that craptastic canon any day. They are simply not even close in any regard. The Nikon is not that expensive too. And then the video..... Less frame rate options moire and aliasing. Canon without magic lantern is nothing special in video. Look at the Panasonic mirrorless options if you want video. You can actually use the.viewfinder while filming. And the GH series are simple breathtaking in sharpness. You can also adapt all those old MF lenses. And with peaking on the g6 nailing focus is child's play.
@Simalacrum10 жыл бұрын
I'm a Canon user, but... yeah, in this case the D3300 is clearly the superior camera. Truth is though, they're both absolutely fine for a beginner. Neither will disappoint. ...I would go for a 700D/D5300 as a beginner, though, nobody (beginners included) should really get these cameras. :P

Sam Rielly APS-C mirrorless > APS-C DSLR. The a6000 has better auto focus, burst rate & IQ than any DSLR in its price range. I shall refer you to this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6GbfJKumcScrbc#t=808 - 13:31 (though in fairness, a6000s are about equal in IQ to Nikon due to sensor sharing, but much better than Canon) Canon's latest 7D Mark II is beaten out by sensors used in entry level Nikon DSLRs and many of Sony's mirrorless cameras. You can check DXOMark and TheCameraStore's test of the 7D II to see that. (they show it vs. the D3300, and it loses for image quality) Tony Northrup came to the same conclusion. Things have improved a lot since the Nex 3, lens selection is still an issue but if you can look past that there's zero reason to go DSLR (APS-C). Mirrorless is not *quite* there for full frame yet (auto focus needs more work) but APS-C is pretty much conquered - unless you need the 7D II's slightly better AF & access to Canon's lenses for sports photography, the 7D II is so expensive though, I'd rather just get a full frame camera at that price point. It's insane that the 7D II is $2000 and has worse IQ than $400 Nikons.
@samsamrielly9 жыл бұрын
Just gonna say there is something incredibly dodgy about those dxo mark scores, they seem to shit all over canon and favour Nikon to ridiculous extent, putting the d3300 ahead of the 5D mark iii is absolutely absurd it just is.

I hope this is a joke. Do you really think that Canon would make a new lens because of you. And I know Kai's voice is great but that will not make the slightest difference. And one more thing a cheaper 24-70mm f/2.8 would make the L 24-70 obsolete so they would lose money.

Sam Rielly The megapixel count does not help with the low light performance. It's the size of the pixel.

Xavier Ng Lower megapixels normally mean bigger pixel size, because of the size of a phone body.

Well yeah, but lower megapixels on a sensor size that would be the same for most smartphones would mean better low light performance.

The official non-fanboy answer is... Buy the COMPANY that you want. 'Cause the minute you buy one of these, you're gonna start looking at lenses and stuff, and then you're in the "Canon" or "Nikon" camp. Both cameras are made as entry level cameras to get you to BUY LENSES, and in a couple of years, most people will want to trade up. And you don't want to have to buy all new len$e$ do you?

I think you shouldnt compare the d3300 and the 1200d the d3300 is (in my Country) 560€ and the 1200d 460€ you should rather compare the d3300 and the 650d/700d. And yes i shoot Canon but i accept that the d3300 is better than the 1200d but in my opinion they are not good for comparison

In the End its always what you prefer and what you need. The result will be the same so it doesn't matter what you buy.. Its about what you like using because that helps you to in learning photography. But its important not to look only at the beginner camera also important what which brand has to offer when you wanna upgrad and what you like since switching brands always may be hard take long or be expensive. So dont only look for the present also the future

@MoysyTech10 жыл бұрын
exactly same thing here in England. i would rather have another lens than something like 2 more fps. for sports at that speed i would rather use single shot because i would be more likely to get the shot.
@highvis_supply10 жыл бұрын
well, for me at least, the price difference is too small to go for the 1200D, nikon has a much better sensor (check out the dxomark scores) which is the main thing for me. Also, to be honest, I would rather buy a last generation canon dslr as they are built better, have exactly the same sensor/processor and cost just as little.

You are right, people only buy Canon because the photographers buy it. The only difference is photographers buy a DSLR and people buy a point and shoot from Canon :) So they do not know the reason behind it.
@cooloox9 жыл бұрын
Absolute BS!!! People buy whatever they want to buy. Some people who know little about photography will go for what looks prettier or has better specs "on paper", or a camera someone told them was better. An informed person will buy what suits his/her "needs" and produces the desired output quality at the best price, but keeping in mind future system purchases. I went with Canon 27 years ago simply because I used to read many photographic publications including a UK magazine called Photo Answers and they used to line up tripods with different cameras and lenses on them and do shoot outs. You had a direct side-by-side comparison of the metering accuracy, lens resolution in the real world and even colour accuracy. Canon, overall, won the contests a lot more often than the rest (my personal view only!) and so I leaned toward Canon, followed by Nikon and Minolta. I preferred the look and feel of Canon cameras and as I photographed a lot of people outdoors I found Canon's vastly superior fill-flash a winner for me. The Nikon always made fill-flash look like it was a main light and the subject's face was lit up as brightly as the brighter backlit scene (sky or buildings, etc). The Canon always gave a realistic 1-2 stop difference in brightness level between subject and background which basically made it look as though no flash was used at all, but the exposure was correct. If your subject is darker than its brighter background in real life then it should look darker than its background in the photo to look realistic. In other words - why would a person's face LOOK "lit up" in a scene where the sun is behind the person? It shouldn't and it looks fake. You will note I have not once stated Canon has the best cameras. I have simply stated that "for me" the images looked better in most of the comparisons I used to view, the cameras sit better in my hands and the fill-flash wins hands down. Having said all that - I haven't bothered comparing cameras in many years as I have had no need to do so. I recently bought the 1200D as a carry anywhere camera (meaning in rough neighbourhoods, etc.) because I do some photography for a local newspaper and have to occasionally visit less than favourable areas. If I lose this camera I won't be particularly bothered. This camera has blown me away how incredible it is for the insane price tag. I bought it on special for $348 AUD "body only" with a $100 Canon cash back = $248 AUD. The camera takes fantastic low noise images at ISO 3200 and perfectly usable (within reason) shots at even ISO 6400/12800 as long as you get the exposure correct. At this price I was expecting the quality of an expensive compact camera and was pleasantly surprised how much better it was.

But that's not fair. The Canon counterpart of the Nikon D3300 is the 700D. Nikon D5300 for Canon 70D. Nikon d7200 for Canon 5D (or 7D). Basically the Canon 1200D is a starter camera for those who want to experience the benefits of the ergonomics and features of a DSLR body. But mind you, after some quite of time, especially if you already have lenses, you will have the urge to upgrade the 1200D. I'm currently saving money to buy maybe a Sony alpha camera (with a lens adaptor) or wait for a better Canon or Nikon camera. I do a lot of film making so it makes sense for me to choose a Canon over Nikon. But Canon and Nikon has stagnated in innovation so I'm considering a mirrorless Sony or Panasonic camera. I can have lens adaptops so I don't have problems with shifting to a mirrorless camera.

To all the mirrorless haters: Would you consider the Leica M9 to be an inferior camera? The usefulness of the reflex mirror is dying with cameras like the A7 and M9 with a smaller footprint and just as good or better image quality as DSLRs. In the case of the A7, the EVF is phenomenal on that beast.

I think if you want to buy your first camera you should go for a medium range one.. Entry level cameras get redundant very fast.. Few months in and you will get bored with the slow fps, average low light performance, less features and the overall package of the camera. Eventually you will get an urge to upgrade and you wont have the money. Its best to save some more bucks and go for a medium range camera like canon 700d or nikon 5300 or other similar ones.. This will give you the equal chance of learning with more features and an overall good package.... And remember that when eventually you will want an upgrade you will be a good photographer.. So choose wisely!

@Digitalrev TV: I found the specs and everything Nikon D3300 had to offer beating Canon 1200D hands down BUT... I got to know one critical important thing which I prefer and Nikon D3300 doesn't provide. Canon 1200D has inbuilt bracketing for HDR photography. I think it's a major thing for both portrait as well as landscape photographers. It's a pain to merge the photos to do HDR image manually with tripod shake, longer time to get the settings right etc.
