Buy a Sony A7III Body
amzn.to/2LXpz60
Hey guys, so I finally got fed up with waiting for Canon to come up with an answer to these awesome mirror-less cameras that are taking over the market. Feels like Canon got complacent and they're going to see a lot of users like me switch to a Sony body. I got a Sony A7 III with a Metabones adapter (5th gen) and in this video I'm trying them out for the first time and giving you my thoughts. I didn't do any software updates. Everything is right out of box and that Metabones adapter works amazing. Spot focus and lock as well as eye auto focus work without any problems. Very happy so far. I'll make another video about the Sony body with Canon lenses once I have a little more time with the setup.

I'm a canon shooter. Mirrorless is amazing and allows some things a DSLR just can't do. So if you need those get one. Problem with the Sony lenses is that their better lenses are as big and heavy or even heavier than many of my Canon lenses.

So in case I have to run to get a shot (or get away from a dangerous situation) it will probably stop working? Would be a NOGO for Pros next to the general problem with DSLM and the fully exposed sensor when changing lenses, at least if you work in dusty or wet environments.

No, not in case you run to get a shot, as the only force shaking the sensor is by weight of the body only. Your hands and muscles produce way more force when done deliberately. Dust is a problem though.... Need to clean it often if you're changing lenses often.

Canon is a great company , a little slow moving but when they release something its going to be good. Look at the 5Dmkii , literally changed the game in photo/video world. The only thing I think that they will do for Mirror less is change the lens mount ( which would be a slap in the face to every canon user ). They will make a great body when it happens I just hope they retain the current mount.. comes down to money.

Rent one and an adapter from lensrentals. I'm waiting for mine to arrive tomorrow from them. I ordered the Sigma MS-11 adapter. I'm really on the bubble. Sony is clearly the innovator. STUDIO V PHOTOGRAPHY I would suggest taking an hour and setting all the custom buttons to your liking, and also the function menu, once you have those and my menu set you can almost forget about going too deep into the menus. Also I have the back button set to eye af and the center dial set to regular af that way I can bounce between the two depending on if it's people or things I am focusing on. Also memory m1 thru m4 get wiped out after each card format they are in the Sony folder on the sd card save those once set up to your computer that way you can load them back on as an events shooter you can have natural, and flash settings ready on the go at a moment's notice with all those memory options. Enjoy

Question: I guess the adapter is changing a lot in terms of DoF as it adds distance between the lens and sensor. Can you do comparison of the 5DmarkIII and the Sony with adapter what actual difference are you getting? Great review! :) Is the adapter good enough that you would still consider buying more Canon lenses to use on your Sony a7III or is the Metabones adapter just a stop gap to use your existing Canon lenses, and from here on in you’ll just buy native Sony lenses? And do you have any Sony lenses - if so, are they any good? I’ve been using Canon for 8 years now and have invested in Canon glass, but very seriously thinking of making the switch!
@TimRansome

I just had an honest look at my Canon lenses, and decided that I'd be pretty happy to sell what I have and reinvest with native lenses with the exception of the MP-E65 macro lens ... I think I will get the adapter to start with and see how my Canon lenses perform, but if I love the camera, I'll gradually replace them with native Sony lenses ... I agree it is probably worth hanging on to Canon lenses in case Canon releases something that can compete with the new mirrorless bodies ...

@Eddie32791
@Eddie32791 5 жыл бұрын
The II is lighter and takes less volume when zoomed in and out. In terms of image quality you hardly see any difference, focus speed is roughly the same as well. But if you have the budget, definitely go for the II. And I would recommend to stay away from 2nd hand lenses because you cannot tell what happened to the lens before just by looking at it.

In fact, the Sony a7III with the metabones adapter makes the weight exactly the same as the Canon 5d mark III, 800 grams. Except for the smaller grip making it harder to hold and the fact that the weight shifts to the front because of the metabones plus the lens, you should experience exactly NO weight difference. If anything, the experience is likely to be worse if you use the back display screen to take a picture and hold the camera out away from your body. That leverage requires some extra muscle power.

You have, by far, the best out of box Sony a7III review! Trust me I’ve watched a lot! The funny part is all the big sponsored KZbinrs mention that it doesn’t have time lapse, but I guess none of them bother to actually check the setting like you, lol. In other words, it does time lapses but doesn’t specify it in words. Also how was your over all experience? Would you recommend the switch? Like you I’m a Canon guy.

Nice review! I’m thinking about switching from The 5D iv to this camera as well! My biggest concern is how the Sony will hold up in a professional setting (full day editorials, weddings, events etc.) The canon is a tank and takes all the abuse i throw at it. I don’t know if the Sony will be able to endure the same. Looking forward to your follow up video for this. 👍🏽

Long term usability, disposability of spare parts and the quality of the bodies are also part of the (resale)value of a camera system. Sony lenses are all focus by wire... adapter performance is compromising the AF capabilities. Holding a camera body that is small with a 70-200 f/2.8 is just a mess with such a toy body. However with smaller primes that is an advantage, that‘s true. I hope Canon will still offer bodies with ergonomics for larger lenses, although I am also convinced that for the most parts mirrorless is the system with more potential.

I've got Canon 5Dmiii & 6D and got curious so I bought sony a7iii. ******My thoughts...... 1. Skin tone wise Canon is still the best. 2. With Sony, It kinda reminds me of Nikon (I used Nikon before Canon) 3. love the fast focusing with sony although I don't use the eye tracking all the time. 4. big issue with Sony for me is the brightness in the lcd is totally different from the view finder. Also, even if you put into manual brightness for the LCD still in you shoot in daylight the LCD does not give you decent brightness. 5. is there any options that you can always on the LCD and if you kinda cover the viewfinder it not shutdown the lcd? (i hope this make sense) Sigh.. not I'm waiting for the EOS R5 i hope it is affordable and hell good. EOS R to me it actually good as well but i choose to buy sony a7iii that time. maybe this time i will sell my a7iii and buy eos r5.

Thanks for the comment. I had the same issues with my Sony. I could not find a way to truly enjoy using it. Something was always off. I bought an EOS R just to try it out even though everyone was giving it bad reviews on KZbin. It was absolutely amazing. I loved it so much I sold my Sony the next day. The EOS R is such a pleasure to use for photography. For video it's good but doesn't have all the features of the Sony. The one thing I noticed is that photo and video from the EOS R have so much more character than photos shot with the Sony. Something about the way that the Sony process and compresses their images make it look like it was shoot with a smartphone camera. It lacks that depth if you understand what I'm saying. But anyway if the R5 is $5000 at launch i'm sure you will be able to find a ton of used EOS R on the market as people upgrade. Or wait for the R5 to come down in price. I like your KZbin name btw. That's clever.

@Vasko Obscura admit skin is better in Canon, but that can be corrected in post. The benefits far outweigh the few negatives If I want people pictures, Canon and Zeiss. For everything else, Sony. Hi there. The Sony camera is great I enjoyed using it for the few months that I had it. I picked up the EOS R when it came out and to me it was so much better than the A7III I ended up selling my Sony. There were two things that I didn't like about the Sony. I like to shoot wide open so bokeh is important to me. I found that the bokeh on the Sony was not very smooth and the other thing I struggled with was the Sony color science. I got tired of fighting with my photos trying to get them to look the way I wanted them too. Skin often looked too orange and blue tones looked like they had a touch of green in them.

Hey thanks for the comment. I looked though the video quickly looks like I have clear filters on the lenses. I usually put clear filters on the front of all my lenses to protect the actual lens elements from being scratched by things in my bag or getting chipped by bumping into things while shooting a wedding. It's easier to replace the filter than it is too get the lens fixed. B+W makes really good clear filters they are my go to for that kind of thing. Hope that answers your question. Hey there great video, I'm one of those Canon owners having the same concerns, I'm still gathering info, my understanding is that there's no prob at all when you are working with larger apertures, up to 2.8 but if you use a 100-400 L (New version) the focus system may not work. Have you heard anything like that, or have you tried the Camera with something larger than the 2.8? Thanks again!

If you miss the DLSR feeling try the Sony a99 II. That thing is a monster! 42 megapixels at 12 fps, with all the same features that you love in the A7. I am an owner of the Sony A7 II, and the A99 II. Oh one other thing, all of the native glass is a few years old, it's excellent.

Pierre Michel the video quality in the a99 II is AMAZING! It actually shoots 4k. I was surprized to see that the quality is better than my dedicated video camera the Panasonic HC-X1000. It made me want to sell my camera and upgrade to a larger sensor video quality.

I find myself in a tough place trying to decide if I should grab the A7Riii...I have two 5D3s and felt the IV was not justified enough to buy. I have lots of canon glass that I really don't want to part with. I love the ergonomics of the 5D series, I feel that no other camera system is as easy to use. I've tried them all, and yes even the A7iii in the store. When you're shooting a wedding, corporate event, family, or whatever...I need to know that my camera works. And that's the thing about Canon, it always works, completely reliable, tough. I never have to second guess what I'm doing. I can't say the same for the Sony's I've tried...It's just not fast ergonomic wise. However, feature wise, that's where Canon is lacking. Especially in video. I would love to have the much better ISO capability of the 7iii, coupled with the file crop ability of the 7riii. It all comes down to my canon glass though. I've seen at least 20 videos on the tube that demonstrate the 70-200 2.8 ii just doesn't work with either the MC-11 or the Metabones V. Tracking moving subjects is effectively nil, and at 200mm it won't lock at all. I use that lens A LOT. It's made me a ton of money, it's a perfect lens in every way, and the idea of having to fork out $2600 for the Sony version is just scary. I want to keep my canon glass in case canon gets their act together one day and releases something comparable. And then there's the part of me that thinks, I should wait to hear what Canon's new FF mirrorless will feature...and then I remember this is canon we're talking about, it will probably keep getting delayed, and then upon release they will probably hold back on all kinds of specs as their history has so strongly illustrated. Ugh, I wish there was a better option!

@@vaskoobscura_ you're just responding to a 3-year-old comment, lol. I ended up getting an r3 and an r4 right after that. Those cameras have made me a crap ton of money and I shoot exclusively on the sigma art line.

Nicklas...I was cringing and about to cry when he started shaking those cameras.I was like really now,that's called having faith,because although mine is rugged,i would never shake it.My camera is quite heavy,yet it helps stabilize itself against my body or objects.Plus,I have in body stabilization,so I have the benefit of any lens being stable as well.I believe the time lapse works,so it's a matter of logically making things work,in an alternate manner.Some folks just love to nitpick,as if another camera doesnt have issues,and if you look for issues,you will probably find them..Thanks for the info..

I got the A7R3 at Xmas and now added the A9. They both work really well with metabones and my Canon glass. If you have a lot of Sigma Art glass for CAnon use the Sigma MC-11 instead, it works better than metabones. If you think the AF of the CAnon 1DX is fast don’t try the A9. feature set of these Sony’s is amazing and if you like to shoot manual focus glass but can’t focus for shit like me through OVF, SOny makes its a joy again with instant 6.7x magnification in the EVF at touch of a button. There is now no real reason not to shoot MF. Also the Sony IBIS gives my non-IS Canon glass a new lease of life in low light, like my 135L. I don’t have steadiest hands, but now I can shoot 1/15s and get sharp shots

might not avoid shaking it so hard. because it is IBIS... really helps in low light and slow shutter speed.
