Tony & Chelsea Northrup Thank you for your excellent comparison, Tony! But I’ll happily buy you a beer if do an actual IQ comparison between the Miii and Canon’s 5D series, plus what has been your experience with adapting the Canon 70-200 to your RIII? What is your opinion about the Sony 70-200 2.8? I’ve already started selling off my Canon gear, based on the assumption that replacing my Canon 5DMiii (back up, sold) and Mark IV with Sony MIII and RIII will deliver better image quality overall, all other things being equal -I shoot weddings and portraits. I have the RIII on pre order.

A full frame sensor with the same pixel count is inherently 2x better than APS-C? Cmon man...that’s just plain jackass/bonehead logic lol. You’re bs’ing a lot of people who don’t know better, only to get residual income from link sales, and you know it. Hopefully people actually compare pics from this camera and others themselves before purchasing. Also, let us all know the last time you saw a beautiful photo and immediately dismissed it as it an APS-C sensor image? Or the last time you did the same to a FF image because it wasn’t medium format lol? Go ahead and take your time to think...we can wait...

Антон Павлов Reach harder. A good pix is a good pic, even tho your reply is absurd. The size differences ratios are wildly different lol. I’m guessing you went to that extreme because you can’t tell the difference between pics taken with FF or APS-C sensors, but feel free to justify buying inferior Sony cameras however you like. It’s your money lol.

@OlliAlexander
@OlliAlexander 4 жыл бұрын
@@alyssamakesamigurumi That doesn't make sense to me. Articulating screen is an articulating screen whether it is on a full frame body, aps-c or m43. And Panasonic is rocking the articulating screens. And Sony also decided not to put the articulating screen on the latest a6400 and a6600, which are not full frame (so even if Canon has a patent for full frames only, it wouldn't have stopped them), but instead went for a flip up screen. Weird choices.

Tony I got hooked on your channel when you did the video on the Mitakon lens smoking a cigar.... Lol. Always great teaching but still entertaining. In that video I learned the difference between f stops and t stops. Here again with this great gear comparison I'm excited about getting the A7iii. Even though it's not a full frame lens and not native, I got my eye on the Sigma 16mm 1.8 (a little over $400) as a starter for doing my video work. By the time the upcoming Sigma full frame lenses come out I will have made enough to get their 24mm (they may be cheaper than the G masters and cool alternatives). Thanks and keep 'em coming!

Thanks for the video Tony. I'm not going to bother reading the other comments,. but I bet people are ripping on you for trying to say nice things about the 6DmkII. I really am glad you pointed out how frustrating the tightly clustered AF points are. No 4K was not the only thing that Canon messed up on that camera; using the AF system from an APS-C camera on a full frame sensor without adding more points or at least spreading them out was a HUGE mistake, and in my opinion cripples it for stills. (though it is pretty great on the 80D) BTW - SDP is pretty awesome, I would suggest it to anyone. Had a lot of fun reading it. I have the Lightroom book too, not as fun to read, but serves as a great technical manual for the program.

That's a very important point that you have to think about the price of the lenses for the A7III, especially the high quality lenses if you want to get the best image quality out of the camera. Many people were hyped when Sony announced the A7II because of the many features for a very good value for the money so they wanted to buy these camera. But they don't think about the high prices for Sony FE mount lenses.

except what isn't really appreciated is that the Sony lenses will hold their ground with high end glass from Nikon/Canon (which are more of less all the same price). Yes you can get a cheaper kit from Nikon and Canon but long term if you're serious about photography, you'll be upgrading to L glass, Sony (at the moment) cut out the middle step and give give you the best option. i would imagine if you were to create a Sony kit and a Canon kit with similar quality glass the prices would be more or less the same.

Hey Tony & Chelsea Northrup, you guys are doing a great job! I joined in watching your videos about 8 months ago and y'all have blown me away with the way you come at reviews and the community that you've built. Listen but don't worry about the critics. Sony has been cranking out amazing cameras so far these last few months; the A7RIII, A9, and now the A7III. But Before that you were praising (for good reason) the Nikon D850 which is a great camera, and you still tote the Panasonic GH5 if only for its video capabilities. Plus, if you were truly a sellout you wouldn't be using Blackmagic Studio cameras in your studio there (I'm a videographer by trade). Don't listen to the trolls they just need somewhere to be heard! Keep on fighting the good fight and putting out amazing videos!

You have certainly upset a few people and I can see why. Saying 2.25x better needs clarification. A larger sensor does not mean better quality, just a larger field of view, given everything else is equal. The A73 has larger pixels so you would expect better ISO performance and dynamic range as its receiving more light per pixel. But its a trade off at the expense of reduced resolution per pixel. This A73 wouldnt be good for wildlife, portrait, architectural photographers and more, just those shooting in low light conditions like nightclub photography etc.

Panasonic G9? Too bad you didn't include this in your comparisons. For those who find M43 enough, the G9 gives the a7iii a serious challenge, feature for feature. But as you say, you can't go wrong with any of the cameras you discussed. Great time in the history of photography to be a photographer!

Seems like the G9 (also the Olympus em1 mark ii) isn't getting much love now that Sony's A7 III and Fuji's X-H1 are out. I own the G9 and the feature set and IQ is fantastic. Tony's price figure of $9,000 for the A7III and three lenses will be far greater than my overall costs for my G9 kit. It appears M43 cameras are still having trouble earning respect amidst their FF and APS-C peers. (I did note that Tony mentioned the GH5, but that is much more video-centric, whereas the G9's feature set much more matches the Sony and Fuji.)

So many comments about "~2X image quality". Its not an exact scale. Probably a poor use of terms but Tony was just generalizing the benefits of Full frame over APS-C (Bokeh, Cleaner images, better at lower light). SO take it for what it is - a video of the A7 III vs lots of the competition and not an exact scientific apples to apples comparison. Tony has repeatedly enjoyed using Canon, Nikon, Fuji and Sony so all the sell out comments are completely over the top too, considering all reviewers on KZbin place Sony ahead of the game. And for full disclosure, I'm quite happy shooting with my Canon 5D3. Of course Tony knows what he meant and just gets on with it, so doesnt need nuts like me defending him either, lol.

All but one of them (Sigma 1.8/18~35 Art for my a6500) are fast primes (e.g. Samyang XP 1.2/85) and only 2 of them are native E-mount (Samyang AF 1.4/35 FE & Samyang AF 1.4/50 FE), all others are Canon (I've shot Canon for 40+ years) or EF-mount Sigma lenses from 15 to 300mm, adapted w/ a Metabones IV and Viltrox Speedbooster II. Thank you for compiling this info! I was especially curious on the a7 iii vs the GH5, as I'm undecided between the two (interested in video first, photo second). Full frame, form factor, and innovation (Sony) are compelling reasons on the a7 iii; however, the GH5 seems to be the only camera at that price point able to do 60p. Do you find you record in 60p often/always if available? It seems like people render at 24p (which to my understanding is more of a style choice, as 60p is "technically" better).

I just got the a6500 and I'm debating to whether I should send it back to get the a7iii or keep it. I do photography and enjoy using the video features for filmmaking. Really appreciate your help

I'd love to see the IQ resolving from this setup. It'd be cool to see what you're getting with an a7riii say with a gmaster 85 1.2 vs a7iii and batis more friendly budget with JPEG and RAW downloads.

@timothylinn
@timothylinn 6 жыл бұрын
Tony, you can't just say a sensor that has 2x the surface area has two times the IQ as though it is some demonstrable linear relationship. (To be clear, I'm not questioning that full frame is capable of higher IQ.) Is there some place you've expanded on this? Maybe provided sample images the demonstrate what 2x IQ looks like to you? I'm not a hater. I'm genuinely curious about this.
@elliottanderson4453
@elliottanderson4453 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, does this mean that all medium format cameras have 2x the image quality of full frame? So I can go grab a hasselblad H1, and given that altruistic statement, shoot images that have 2x the quality even the very best, smaller sensors? The folks defending this statement by simply stating the sensor is twice as big... it's just the poorest possible argument.
@WoodyONeal
@WoodyONeal 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It's hardly a linear relationship. Tony would also have you think that a FF sensor collects more light than an APSC because it's simply a larger sensor. Also wrong.
@timothylinn
@timothylinn 6 жыл бұрын
Indeed, Elliott. It's not really an argument at all. That's why I'm curious as to how he arrived at it. If he's using "2X IQ" as shorthand for a one stop advantage in noise and DR, for example, then the statement seems misleading to me.

Canon 6D Mark II for $1900 lol. Because of taxes cameras are normally more expensive in Germany but with Canon's current cashback promo you can get the 6D Mark II here for 1535 euros. Why is everything so expensive in Europe
@Traumglanz
@Traumglanz 6 жыл бұрын
First: Prices include vat in Europe, so prices LOOK cheaper in the united states than they actually are. Second: We get a lot better services from our governments, but that comes at a price of higher taxes. The rule of thumb in Europe is a vat of 20% with half that rate for education, food and other essentials. But it certainly drives up prices. Third: Currency fluctuations. Lastly, mostly because they can. Europeans are just willing to pay more for their stuff. We seem to buy not as much. we seem to cycle through products not as the same fast cycles as Americans do. BTW non-junk food is cheaper :p Walmart had to leave the german market because they could not compete. Education is a lot cheaper. Healthcare is a lot cheaper, etc … so it's not everything, it's mainly the luxury and professional equipment that's more expensive.

This is a good point could sony know that canon has a camera coming out so are trying to move as many customers over to sony before photokina? Possibly...but I still don’t think it will be quite as good as the features Sony is offering- unless they could end up on par which could be why sony has introduced this not so basic model as such a stellar price who knows- but I would just say if you need a camera purchase the best option there is at the time you need it- otherwise your wasting 7 months of your life waiting for something that might not happen and even if it does you can’t get those 7 months back of creating, learning and personal development! :)

The mirrorless camera from Canon will almost certainly be less impressive than the A7III. Same for Nikon. The X-T3 will probably be really nice, but it will still be a crop sensor camera, and probably will still not have in-body stabilization. If anything actually comes out this year at that price point and beats the A7III... I mean, shit I'd be really happy, but I'll also be really surprised. As far as Sony, one of the main weaknesses has been the lack of lenses at a reasonable price. But as they become more popular, third-party manufacturers will start jumping all over it, so that issue will go away quickly. And by the time Canon/Nikon can match the A7III, Sony will come out with the A7IV and destroy them.

Agreed, Tony can you also review the Sony LA-EA3 & LA-EA4 adaptors as there are Sony A mount users that want to switch and use their A mount lenses (and there are a lot of A mount lenses out there) on the E mount bodies but the limitations of these adaptors (when Sony has the full access to everything) seems very odd. For example the LA-EA3 with focus set to AF-C doesn't continue to focus after the first frame is taken except on a9 or at 3 fps, Only 3 focus modes available, LA-EA4 only has 15 focus points, etc. Come on Sony think about the A mount users and improve these adaptors. Are the Metabones and Sigma MC-11 actually better than Sony's own adaptors.

Honestly Tony I feel like you have extremely under estimated the X-H1. The IBIS is worlds ahead of the A7III, atleast 3x as good in video. I encourage you to test this. FE lenses are huge even at comparable "crop factored" apertures, this is due to many things, but mainly once the focal length exceeds the flange distance you have lenses that are longer than Canon and Nikon FF lenses. On top of this the Sony lens line up is a mess, and what they do have that is even comparable to the excellent Fuji glass is extremely expensive, and huge. Also, I understand where are going with the 2x image quality, but it just isn't there in real use. The math is right, and the physics is undeniable. The issue is that only works when you compare just noise. I encourage you to check actual images at equivalent exposures. The colors hold together and the processing keeps the difference to about .5 stops is most situations to my eyes. Lets not forget that Sony's color science still leaves something to be desired. They have made strides with the A9, I don't know if the A7III is more similar to it or its predecessors. Either way it is at the end of the pack for consistency. I think the A7III is a great step for Sony, and a great Camera. But it is a huge system once you put any decent lenses on it, and for the cost you invested with G master lenses is just ridiculous.

So, you took pictures, compared them and came to the conclusion that the sensor size contributes to a 2x better image quality? It is not just the sensor that affects the image quality Tony. As always: fantastic video, thank you, Chelsea & Tony! In light of this test I wonder if you or any of the viewers can give me a bit of advice regarding my intended camera upgrade (I guess many people face a similar decision): Area of use: enthusiast; exclusively still pictures, heavy on landscapes, animals and the occasional party/wedding, no video whatsoever. I am currently in the market for upgrading my Canon T3i. Originally I was going for the 6D MKII, since I have a couple of Canon lenses (16-35 mm f/4 L, 100 mm f/2.8 L, 50mm EF f/1.8) which I am very much in love with. However, after reading and hearing about the 6D MKII's poor dynamic range, I have my doubts, since I post-process almost all of my stills in lightroom and shoot quite a bit of landscape stills. This is why I'm now considering either switching to the highly praised Sony A7 III while keeping my lenses or sticking with Canon. Enter: the Metabones MK V adapter which you have also tested extensively. The most important selling point for me is still picture quality (mostly sharpness/detail but also low light performance). I am reluctant to sell my beloved Canon lenses, so I wonder which set-up will give me the best picture quality in light of that. I hear the Metabones MK V adapter has massively improved with the latest firmware and AF (even eye AF) works reliably now with most L lenses but picture quality/sharpness is apparently not as good as the Canon lenses on a native body. Can you confirm this? To be honest this sounds a bit unlikely, since the adapter has no glass and nothing but air between the lense and the camera - how could this influence the picture quality? Another option would be the 5D MKIV (still cheaper than the Sony set-up considering the pricy adapter). I understand that in terms of usability and features, the A7 III is unmatched by the Canon bodies and generally would be my favored option (mostly because of built-in IS, eye AF, evf, focus peaking, smaller body, and superior dynamic range). However, combined with the adapter it is the most expensive set-up by a margin (all in all at least € 2,500.00), and more importantly, I am wondering if the picture quality and AF of the Canon lenses is better with the native Canon models considering the potential quality-loss due to the adapter (although, as said, this seems unlikely to me). What's your recommendation as to which way to go (6D MKII, 5D MKIV or A7 III with Metabones V) keeping in mind that still image quality/sharpness is the most important feature to me (followed by low light usability, dynamic range, AF quality). Things I don't care about: dual memory card, phone jack, 4k video, flash Thank you very much!

I don’t think he’s biased it’s just Sony are simply making the best cameras for the money and the only people that are complaining are the ones that have put their money into another brand and are now gutted to see what Sony are doing. Most of the top cinematic vids on KZbin are made with Sony cameras. I changed to Sony last year and not looking back. ✌️

It's obvious they praise Sony... but have you noticed Tony loves his Nikon? I remember saying his go to camera is his D850. So you're saying that because the IQ is not 2x, he's Sony biased? That's a strong statement. Funny enough, he did say the Fuji is a better option if you want to shoot video. Don't get me wrong, I prefer objective reviews, but can't blame them for recommending Sony, after all, Sony's game is huge now. That said, he does point out not to rely on what he says, but be your own judge. He even said it in two different videos he can't recommend the A7III until people have tested it for at least 6 months.

Thans Mike, I was actually planning to get the A7RIII but it's too much of an investment right now. Hopefully once the A7III starts paying off, I'll get that 42mp beast! I do love Canon and their lenses, I think they are great! I've had Canon for over 10 years now, but hopefully Sony body + Sigma ART lenses will not disappoint!

Great video, Tony. Just wanted to pass along in case you hadn’t seen it, but, regarding the Sony a7iii, Jason Lanier showed that Canon lenses work magnificently with the Sigma MC 11 adapter. This Sony a7iii camera is phenomenal. It may very well be my next one.

Once again thanks on the informative video, really appreciate the time you take to keep us well informed. I'm going to buy the Sony a7 III, my dilemma is, what all around lens do I get with it. I've read that the Sony G 24-105mm f/4 is an all around excellent lens, and wanted to ask for your opinion and or recommendation. Thanks Aldo S Verdugo

One thing - you can't talk about sharp E-mount glass without saying the Z word (Zeiss) Like the 55mm 1.8 that resolves at 40MP

Definitely don't get advice about buying a cameras from people that post videos like this! I'm looking at two 12x19 inch prints on my wall. One from a crop Canon 7d & one from a full frame Canon 5d & the full frame photograph is most definitely not two times the "image quality". Go to your local camera store with your memory card & try the cameras & lenses for yourself & don't let professional KZbin personalities who are probably no better than you at photography make up your mind for you.

Het Tony and Chelsea, love your show. Your tech advice stands the the test of time. I started with Sony with the new a7r, in Dubai in 2013 (?). I have added the a6000. I may upgrade them both but things are fine and I am more interested in lenses.

Great video! Looking forward to see the Sony-Canon adapters video, because I am thinking to upgrade from the original 6D to the A7III without selling my Canon lenses.

I own lots of Canon L-glass and it works just fine on a6500 & a7II with Metabones IV - and on the a7III it should be even better.

I will be mainly using it at events with 24-70mm f/2.8 II, Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art and the Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS. Reliability in autofocus is critical, speed and especially accuracy.

Keep in mind that the 6Dii is usually sold at heavy discounts, because it would not sell without them. ^_^ $1,300 is not an unusual price. for the 6Dii

Hi Tony, Great video! I just wanted to give you a some insight from a professional video standpoint... No one is using the Sony lenses for video, I shoot regularly on the Sony fs7 etc and i have never even seen anyone using the native sony lenses. Its adapted EF glass pretty much all over the place. Sure there are a few times when the autofocus is handy for voggers etc. Fly by wire is the main reason i wouldn't ever purchase them. Its still a big deal when your shooting documentary, or events. etc. Also im not speaking for everyone, just the industries i have worked in. AKA professional video world shooting documentaries to concerts to feature films. Just something to consider :). Thanks again.

Thanks for your quick coverage of canon lenses on the a7riii in your quick review. But could you please do a detailed examination of mc11 with a7iii and canon lenses. This is the only thing stopping me from buying one for video. I am happy using 5d mk iv for stills but I want the best alternative for 4k video with my L lenses. I am not willing to buy G lenses. I am hoping to find a camera that works with L lenses without compromise on auto focus or stabilization.
