Canon 7D mk1 in 2020? even 2021..Can you make MONEY with an OLD camera?

The 7D got me through college and then was my main camera the first 2-3 years of my career. The 7D has pretty much all the features you'd want out of a modern camera other than 4K. Funny this is the second video I've seen about the 7D being an "old" camera, and technically it is, but really its a very modern camera. A true "old" camera test would be something like a 40D.

Just found this by accident when looking for 'how to calibrate lens to 7d' So refreshing to not be told you need the new, latest, shinier, camera with thousands of features you probably won't use. I am hooked on 2nd hand gear at the mo, I bought a new 7d as an upgrade and to use with the 450d I won in a random competion about 13 years ago. (I was still using film back then, and still have my old eos650 it probably still has film in it). It worked perfectly with my very old canon 50mm 1.8 which I used 90 percent of the time on the 7d. I had a tamrom 70-300 which was great on the 450 for details, but wouldnt work with the 7d. That died, and i bought a 24-105 that I spotted in a 2nd hand shop. About 3 years ago I had the chance to buy a well used, well loved 5d mkii, from a photographer friend, and gave my grand-daughter the 450d. (I'm waiting for her to get bored with it, its a great little camera, but I think she is hooked now, too!) So, all cameras still working perfectly, withva mixed bag of chap old lenses, and getting pretty good results and you cant beat that smug feeling when you win a ebay auction!

Jacqueline Terry - Once again a comment that confirms to me that most people who are satisfied with more 'humble' digital gear are previously/currently film shooters 😊 For some pro photographers with specific commercial needs, a current tech camera is a practical tool to maximise efficiency for sure. For many of us though - current tech isn't necessarily money well spent... In the past I've been lucky enough at various times to have worked with some of the finest gear available at any given time - and I've found the law of diminishing returns applies, certainly in my field of equine photography! I remember the two digital cameras which I got more joy and satisfaction - and memorable images - out of than any other digital cameras: 5D mk1, and 5D mk2. My ideal digital set up right now would be one of each, with a 24-105 f4L, and 100mm f2! (And my ol' 7D of course). I owned and treasured both but had to sell them due to economic effects of the pandemic. It's good to hear you now have a 5D mk2 - it's a lovely thing to use, then, now, and into the future. Great to hear a pro confirming what I was hoping for. I just got my 24-105 mkII L USM and am beyond thrilled at the performance and durability of that lens and camera. Shot some long-exposure lighting in the rain the other night...wiped it the lens and camera off...and...stuck it in the camera bag. Image quality is professional grade and the ruggedness is even better. Thanks for your video and you down-to-earth relatability. I bought the 7D for some paid jobs when it was released, and today it is still as good as when I got it. I will never sell my 7D, it is still a reliable rock solid tool. As you proved in this video, if you know how to use it the 7D will still deliver pro-photo quality. The only drawback is that (compared to todays cameras) the high ISO levels are a bit too noisy ... but again if you know how to work with your gear there is always a way around it. I will use it until it dies .... but being such a quality tool I guess I might die before the camera does LOL

I just sold my 550d and got me a used 7D for just only 10k Php or roughly around £140. I am excited to shoot some sports with it. And with its 8fps, its a whole lot better than the 4fps of the 550d I had.

Great video, I have just brought a 7d after my sony broke and a 7d was all I could afford. I'm loving the quality during the day. I do have a couple of football cup finals which are in the evening under flood lights. I have a 70-200 f2. 8 sigma lens but I'm worried I won't be able to use the camera due to the poor iso performance. Stunning photos by the way

I think you'll be fine up to 800 ISO, maybe higher, lightroom noise reduction can work wonders with 7D files. I shot at 800 a few days ago with no issue I couldn't deal with, the f2.8 lens will help a lot. Take a nifty fifty 1.8 with you just in case it's not working out - a clean cropped image is better than a gritty telephoto...lol. Hopefully you'll get a shutter speed you can work with. I really went a bit over the top in the video... I just want people to be aware of the limitations of old sensors really.

Thank you Fernando! If you do low light photography then maybe an upgrade would help - but a good value upgrade may be an old 1Ds mk3... I can recommend that camera - full frame, great AF - and cheaper than a new camera upgrade. Check ebay 😉 - and thank you for your comment!

Great video. Currently shoot on a cheap as chips 1300d and do a lot of skiing photography in uk at dryslopes and indoor also in the Alps. Food photography is pretty big as well as I'm a chef. Think this could be a good option for me with a 70-200 f2.8 lens upgrade as well. Cheers.

Stuart Brown - Yes 7D may be a good fit for you and at a reasonable price these days. The 7D's 'weakness' of it's high iso performance won't be an issue with what you want it for really. Food photography will always be well lit, and usually for online presentation - so no need for high megapixel files there. As for the EF70-200 2.8L IS USM.... my favorite lens - even the Mk 1 version is lovely, and not a bad price used now. The 7D is nice when you know how to operate within its technical limitations. Its ISO performance is obviously pretty bad when compared to modern cameras for instance, but when you have decent light and only kick up the ISO to get a faster shutter speed then the result will still be better than one should expect. High ISO shots in a lowlight situation will not look so good though. But again, when you have good light and when you know what you are doing then this camera can still deliver great results!

My first dslr from film was can eos 400D and it had a lot of limiting compared to some of personal you had Nikon D90, D810 and canon 5Diii's However, I learned a lot about exposure triangle, focus recompose, steading the camera for sharp images and shooting at 100 iso when ever I could. Few years later I purchased 7D and it was like having a magical camera,it was sharp, expose was spot on, more AF points, solid build. I realise quickly the best images were at 800 iso or lower as noise was issue. I now have the 7Dii and that is great dslr and I still get great images from 20.2mp sensor.

Shooting with Sony A57 with Minolta 50mm F1.7. Since the lens is only around $20 on eBay I ordered 3 and tested them and one copy stood out. Sharp at F1.7 and now I use it at wide open most of the time because it's that good. I just trashed the other 2. I'm surprised at the quality photos I'm able to take.

Attila453 - I always found Minolta gear to be generally excellent also. If the images satisfy you - that is the only thing of importance. I often prefer my old manual 'film era' lenses.

Another great video, really enjoy your style. I just recently sold a bunch of stuff due to gear overload causing me to lose some enjoyment of photography. Was just having too many debates with myself before going out about what lenses to take, etc. and it was just too much. Sold most of it and picked up a decent shape D700 and a 28-300 Sigma FX lens and just getting back to enjoying shooting again. I know the D700 is old, but the simplicity of it is almost more enjoyable and the images it can produce are still excellent. Eventually I'll get another "pro-level" modern camera, but right now just enjoying photography again without all the bells and whistles. The only issue is the lenses are expensive...there's always something, lol.

I still love the images from D700 - they have a certain 'look'. I know what you mean about the gear... sometimes it all just gets in the way somehow. I have the kit lense 18-55mm (mk3) which has no image stabilization. I'm finding it quite difficult to take nice pics from my hand without it being abit blurry at times. iv just sold my panasonic fz1000 bridge camera - i had previously owned fuji stuff but sold that because the lenses were just far too expensive for me as a hobbyist to justify - iv had a good couple of years with the bridge camera and im at the point were i want a larger sensor and the ability to swap lenses etc for shooting motorsports - i was going to buy a canon m50 but then iv been looking at the 7d mk2, a7ii, d750 and so on that sort of level - the 7d is REALLY cheap i can pick up a mint example from MPB for around £175 and then put the £ towards a USM 100-400 or 75-200 f2.8 which would just make sense - i was browsing flickr and came across a few albums shooting motorbikes at the track and the output from the 7d is REALLY clean files, im really impressed with what iv seen so i think im going to pull the trigger and buy one and give it a go!

Alan Alain - I used different lenses depending on which images you refer to - for the beach shots at 1:32 all were shot with a cheap EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS STM (I rate this lens equal in sharpness to the series 1 EF70-200 f/2.8L IS USM, and noticeably inferior optically to the series 2). Obviously, build quality is crap compared to the L lenses! I had a Sigma 30mm f/1.4* on the other body but I didn't use it on that shoot. You can see some Sigma 30mm shots in this video : kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXiVaIJ7qt9-pJo *the Sigma on the 7D is unreliable with autofocus unless subject is moving at constant distance. When subject is approaching I have to manual focus (hit rate of 1 in 3 lol)... About the same as my favourite all time lens EF85mm f/1.2L, which focuses accurately but too slow for action. For the portraits - I used two lenses, an EF50 f/1.8 STM - and an EF100mm f/2 USM. For black backgrounds when shooting in broad daylight - or anytime really - I use a Godox AD600BM on the subject. Unfortunately I've had to sell all my 'premium' gear to pay bills and buy food thanks to the economic mess that Covid brought. All I have left is one 7D, the 55-250, Sigma, nifty fifty, and my old manual film lenses - Zeiss mainly. Enough to take care of most shoots - although the AD600 blew over and broke on the last portrait shoot - which is a real setback... @@Mustafa-mh6ho I'd recommend either Nikon D700 or Canon 5D Classic - or 5D Mk2. All of these are full frame, and have beautiful image quality. Don't worry about the 'low' pixel count on 5D Classic and D700 - you can print huge prints with these beautiful cameras. 5D2 has higher resolution but you won't notice it. Hope this helps.

I used to have 7D years ago and used it until it … drowned in a swamp (literally).. Currently, my main cameras are the 5D IV and R6. A few weeks ago, I accidentally saw a 7D available for almost nothing and bought it for nostalgia. I’ve been taking pictures for a few days now with it and have to admit that this is still a very good camera that can be used professionally. In fact, I have only one problem: the viewfinder doesn’t show the AF and Drive information (when pushing the top button). I don't remember if that was the case with my previous 7D, anyway, it needs to get used to when you need to switch the AF mode quickly. Other than that it's still a great camera with good image quality and extremely pleasant colors!

One more thing: you mention high ISO noise. Yes, it’s strong but it’s not that ugly. Sometimes it even adds character to a photo and can be enjoyable.

Thanks Ryan - and sorry for late reply. Yep, that light is tough to get right with a 7d ... if the subject is too under exposed then it's almost impossible to recover detail without a lot of digital noise. Get the subject right and the sky blows out... If I can't move to a position where the light is more even - then I use spot meter on subject and -1 exposure comp. That way I can recover the -1 stop of exposure on the subject in post without a noise penalty, and there's usually enough detail/color in the sky to bring out by dropping highlights in post. (I use Lightroom by the way).

James Carlos - 7D Mk 2 - yes, DPAF system. 7D Mk 1 tracking, no. Continuous af for photos through viewfinder as you'd expect but live view af is very poor.

Hi mate. Love your delivery. I am slowly getting into making money from photography. I've been using an 80D for 3 years (with some decent lenses). I mostly do food photography but landed a gig for a horse nutrition company. Client will be sending horses and models to location so I decided to look into renting a second body for the day. Worked out cheaper to buy a 7D. Now I have a great second body that uses the same battery and lenses and has very similar controls. I've had it serviced by my guy - no errors and 17k shutter count. Happy days! Any advice for the shoot would be much appreciated. Cheers.

LiMe - That's an interesting question. (I'm assuming you mean video/film making). Usually the 7D wouldn't be high on my list of recommended cameras for video - but I think maybe that as a student of film making then the 7D's limitations may be an asset... As a film maker you'll be manual focussing - so the poor video autofocus will not be an issue - and as a student it is all about how to tell the story, and gear has very little to do with that. A good film maker can tell a good story on any camera really. As you become more proficient in your craft, you will naturally change to more advanced equipment as you need it. Just a few weeks ago, shot some waterbirds who where walking on ice , with my 7D and tamron 100-400, and my 90D and canon 100-400 II..... couldnt see much difference in image quality between them....

Richard - Yes indeed, difference is subtle. I quite like the thought of a 90D - I had 80D for a while and really liked it a lot.

TheaBella PascuZZi - You can learn so much from you tube videos - all the basics - but the best way I know is to shoot, keep shooting, and then shoot some more. Build experience through making mistakes (if you are shooting digital). If you shoot film then some education is needed really - mistakes cost money... I will be making some more straightforward 'tutorials' over the coming weeks which may be of some value to you - long exposures, photographing one subject in four styles, shooting to avoid the obvious, etc. Thank you for taking the time to comment - I appreciate that 😊

Hello Brian. May I ask what exactly you'd like to know about photographing horses? I ask because it's a truly huge subject... do you simply want advice on photographing, say, a daughters gymkhana competition effectively - or are you interested as a line of work? I've been collecting material for a full in-depth video on the subject (which will run over an hour by the looks of it) but if a short video on tips is all you need then I could get that out next week. As always, real life work tends to get in the way of a lively reliable you tube schedule at present.

Brian Rankin - these are my personal methods - for you & anyone else interested: Auto focus, (Nikon or Canon) single point, continuous AF/servo, back button focusing. This is all I use. It works great for moving targets, and for portraits I use the same settings but focus, then release back button to fix focus, re-compose, and shoot. Manual/Shutter Priority/Aperture Priority: Cloudy day for action- manual with auto ISO. Sunny day for action (sometimes) aperture priority usually @f5.6 unless I have time to get fancy - or background sucks so I want to throw it out of focus. Horses moving quickly toward you - aperture no wider than f5.6 (6.3 better) or the whole subject won't be in focus, and focus on riders face. Horses passing at constant distance - I open up to 1.8 to throw subject to front of image (prime lens) or f2.8 (zoom). Manual shooting - Shutter speed - minimum 1/1000th in action, pref. higher. (Unless you want to shutter drag to get motion blur on horses' legs). ISO auto with upper limit at 800 (for older sensors) . Metering - I use evaluative - and sometimes spot for portraits. Drive - I never use burst (because I don't want to plough through 500 images in the edit). Single firing, anticipate the stride. All burst will do is give you 50 images, every shot at the wrong point in horses' cadence. (sure, not always - but often). Lenses - I only use two. Crop Sensor: Telephoto zoom and a 30mm f1.4 prime. Full frame: 50mm 1.8 prime and tele zoom (70-200 2.8). Though a 24-105 alone would be enough to get a shoot in any camera. Lighting - Godox AD600BM and/or Godox TT685 *The subject: ears forward, mouth closed, no eye white showing above the eye, head/neck straight, elevation, propulsion through from the hind, never down on the forehand. Hope this helps.

gives me confidence ive made the right decision, pretty much always shot with canon, then switch to a fuji Ex1 , then an an x100S, then back to canon 60D which was very nice, ill health meant i couldnt carry such heavy camera ( with 150-600 lens i had ) so the canon and lens went and i ended up with olympus omd em1.. had that for a few years but just cant get on with it. canons i could just pick up a shoot with no problems.. so this week bit the bullet after 3 years of hardly taking pis and not enjoying the oly i sold it and have got the Canon 7D on way to me.. really looking forward to putting it through its paces

Canon 7D can and will always be capable to deliver so long as one can keep shooting. I'm using two bodies of this model and hope to continue doing so for many years more. The latest model's extra features are things I can easily do without. But I admit, I'm more focused on quality lenses.

I propose a challenge: shoot the same scene with a very old Canon 10d and another 7d Mk 1 and also Mk2. Print out the photos and ask your friends if anyone can tell them apart. I did that and everyone couldn't tell one photo from another. Do you understand? This pixel story is soft talk from camera manufacturers.

Hurrght Oláffson - I agree - that's precisely the point I tried to make clear, for 'general' photography. Add in a more modern sensor, say, 5Dmk4 - print A3 and most people either won't see or even care about any differences. (Apart from photographers who disregard viewing distances...) However, shoot a scene at a dimly lit wedding reception at 2am with the same cameras at 3200 ISO and it's a different story. Good modern sensors are clearly far superior - I'm sure you'd agree - but my message is that most of us just don't need it. Thank you for your comment.

@@loneshootr I use strobes and flash all the time in order to keep the iso low and control lighting better (i have also a 7D and an "old" 5d2). I loved the photos you took of the horses and in one of these photos, I venture to say in this picture (2:11) that you used a snoot flash with low ISO and shoot in f8 or f11. great job!

@Gibby - The 7d is the right price for sure and is a solid camera as I've tried to demonstrate - but if you can afford the extra I would go with 5D2 to be honest. Some of the nicest prints I ever produced were shot on 5D mk2. You mention the 1Ds mk2... Personally I would go with the 1Ds mk3 if you can, I owned one for a couple of years before I got the 1Dx and the Mk3 1Ds is a beautiful camera - but 5d is likely to be cheaper, with similar resolution but slightly less powerful autofocus.
