Awesome review Dustin. I was initially very disappointed with the specs of the 5D Mark IV, but like you I pre-ordered one (as my Mark III was at the end of its service life). My experience over these last few months have been nothing short of fantastic. It really is an amazing upgrade and I'm happy I didn't wait on obtaining one. I think it's the dynamic range that caught me by surprise, as I didn't think it would be as good as it is. I'm finding I can pull as much as 3 stops if it's really needed. I've enjoyed watching your reviews of this camera, and seeing how they compared to my own real world experiences. The best, more unbiased review of the 5D4. I had a 5D3, and the significant improvements in AF, tracking, and most importantly for me, dynamic range and recovery latitude, were the reasons why I upgraded and I cant be happier. I don't take videos so the video capabilities were of little concern for me.

I have a 6D and I love it. But after the release of its latest version 6D2 I do not find my self to exited about purchasing it for obvious reasons. I rather make the push for the 5D4, a camera that is great in everyway and will be good for the next 5 to 7 years.

You're not alone... I have had my 6D for 3 years now... an AWESOME Canon body that has never let me down. The 6D2 added some great new physical features for sure... but the IQ, IMO can't best the original 6D ( rented a 6D2 and shot some for a weekend comparing w/ my original 6D, wasn't impressed at all). I had, the year before tested a 5D4 for a weekend and was blown away. Wasn't ready to make the leap then. Hoped the 6D2 would be enough of an upgrade to get it...I skipped it. Just recently, w/ all the Black Friday sales going on, took the leap on the 5D4...IT was def an upgrade but I'm not parting w/ my original 6D either.

Great way to sum up your thoughts on your experience with the camera.. I want to pick one up, but waiting for the 6Dii to release first. By then the price on the 5D Mk IV will drop; and the 6Dii could potentially turn out to be a better buy. Time will tell, saving up for a 'no regrets' purchase. I've been using EOS 60D for about 6 or 7 years as my first DSLR, I definitely feel like upgrading now and the 5Div seems like the perfect camera to do so. All that's left is to save up for a few months to actually afford it.

Dustin Abbott . hi l, another great review. thank you. i am currently using a 5dii and i shoot many pictures with 1.4 lens at 1.4. so for me the camrea has to have 1 / 8000 a second speed. i understand that 6d only goes up to 4000th. do you think this will be improved in the 2nd generally many thanks

That's hard to say. That seems to be one area that Canon limits it's "second tier" products, so it will probably come down to where they envision the 6DII sitting in their lineup.

did you think of ND filters for the 1.4? I have a 6d and I sometimes use a 50mm 1.4 and nearly always for the 1.4 and for that I sometimes have to use an ND filter. ;)

A really informative review! I've been thinking of purchasing one of these, and you've almost swayed me! There has been a lot of criticism of this camera (as you know) but most of those that actually take the plunge and buy one are nearly always very happy with their purchase...as you seem to be too. My needs for the camera are very similar to yours, so again this review has been very helpful. I also find very appealing the idea of over engineered cameras and lenses. Which Canon seem to excel at with their pro bodies and wonderful L series glass, more than any other manufacture I reckon. This might explain to some extent why their pro camera bodies like the 5D Mark 4 are admittedly quite shockingly expensive for what they offer. I'd rather have less tech and more substance (pertaining to durability and build quality) in my cameras anyway. I also read a comment by this guy over at DPReview who went into a camera shop to purchase a Nikon D7200 but also tried out an 80D and was so swayed by how much better quality the Canon felt in his hand that he ended up buying that instead! So maybe it isn't just Canon's pro line of cameras that are built to such high standards? My first DSLR was a EOS-20D which ended up being so good it was my main camera for 8 solid years of quite hard use (for an enthusiast rather than a pro photographer anyway, which I'm not) and its still in perfect working order and as solid as a brick. Its just so outmoded by modern standards that I stopped using it in the end, not because it broke. Well I've been rambling on for quite a bit now, so I shall say good night.

I currently use, along with a 7D Mark II, 2 6D bodies I got via BH Photo incentives for under, net, $1200 each for all of them. So roughly about the cost of one Canon 5D Mark IV. I use 2 full frame bodies so I can have 2 lenses ready to go for fast shooting without changing lenses for spontaneity and reduction of dust/moisture into the camera and lenses. That said, I have followed your reviews for a few years. Nobody consistently hits the economy of words, thinking before hitting record button (some people put out so many videos just to do it that it shows in terms of not using as much thinking ahead of rush to get something new out), and I trust, nearly always, your reviews over any other. I will seriously consider a 5D Mark IV as the price comes down but 2 of them is a bit much to swallow to have 2 lenses mounted.

I'm in the same boat, Roger. I'd like to have a second one for my wedding and event work, but I won't be laying down that amount of cash again for a while. I have sold one of my 6D bodies, and will keep putting money aside. I'll also test the 6DII and might consider replacing my other 6D with that under the right conditions.

Even though I sold off my canon system (except the canon FD lenses) I was curious to watch your review because there is always so much substance in it and one always learns about the state of technology and where different systems are going. Apart from 4k it seems as the camera is a massive all round upgrade to the 6d/mark3 - sensor -touch screen - ergonomy - enhancing lens functionality - in camera processing etc. Thats also the reason the other companies have to offer much more in their bodies to compete as well as the price factor. Sony has a cumbersome menu and no touch screen (though their sensors and processors features etc still have the edge) and more expensive native lenses in the same range. But excellent for manual lenses (old and new). The samsung nx is one of the best hybrids with touchscreen - excellent menu 4k codec etc but dormant now (prices can be ridiculously low) so I think each particular niche has its own camera system. For the hybrid user I don't think that canon will develop a mirrorless fulIframe or viable 4k option in the new future (though they have the research and technology) but I think for dslr still photographers with some video features the mark4 will hold its own.

I do transcode them into MP4 for archiving and processing - usually around 80-100mbs is enough for my tastes. I mostly use Cyberlink Power Director and Color Director for my workflow.

I like the touch screen on my VERY cheaply purchased EOS M (Stores were almost giving it away in 2014). VERY handy for focusing in on different parts of the screen. The touch screen on the 5D MKIV, makes it a very attractive purchase.

Nice honest review with good real world details that many leave out. Thank you Dustin. I am in the market for a new body. Looking at 5DsR or 5DMIV. Leaning towards the R as I shoot commercial work and do sometimes need large files for cropping and/or print. (mostly for crop) Additionally I do use high end Canon L and Sigma Art series lenses that would support the R. Concerns are moire, handheld blur from slower shutter speeds and processing of the larger files. Bonus of course is also file size for cropping and overall sharpness. With you experience with both bodies do you feel the 5DMIV with its increased dynamic range, feature set and at 30MP is enough to warrant purchasing it over the 5DsR in my situation?

If I only shot studio, 5dsr. I did studio for 20 years with medium and large format, and I'd still prefer a medium format digital. For everything else, 5d4. I shoot street these days and pray that my "from the hip" style works when I use it, but even my more calm shooting isn't always the best technique. 40 year pro talking.

Hi Dustin Abbot ~ Great review, thank you. I have a 5DMIII. For interior real estate shots, when not using a flash, I bracket and edit in post. However, sometimes it is handy to have the in-camera HDR image ready to go for more "instant" use. Is the in-camera HDR (for still shots) better on the MIV than on the MIII? Thanks!

I think it is a little better realized, yes.

+TomT In the high ISO segment I demonstrate how that using MRAW at higher ISOs produces cleaner, more detailed results without the need to downsample the results in post.

Sir, this has to be one of the best reviews I've seen on the 5DM4 (among the top 3). I'm a 6D shooter, I love my 6D (especially for astrophotography)... and I'm looking to get a 2nd body. I was considering the 5DM4 (though that price hurts :-) ) I have no interest in "video" and am really only concerned with "photo" performance so your review is quite helpful. (I need to go find your article you mentioned you wrote on the 6D... I too am wondering about the rumored 6DM2 as well). Thank you for doing this.

To get over the file-splitting in video, just format your 64GB card as exFat in your computer, and put it in your camera without formatting it there.

Top work Dustin, another terrific review, I agree with you completely in what you are saying in the 5Dmk4, I too have had mine for two months and could not be happier with it, I must say video use was never a priority for me but can fully understand those wishing it was more equipped for that I guess? My priority was to have a strong, reliable camera that will produce beautiful files and that will last day in, day out, in all kinds of weather and abuse, to me Canon has given me just that. Keep up the great work.

There are actually a lot of 5D series shooters who NEVER use video functionality. There are some that use them almost exclusively for video. It makes for a hard balance to strike for Canon.

graham68ktm It's definitely sharper at wide apertures (Tamron) and is much faster to focus. Focus accuracy is fantastic for me. It doesn't have as large an aperture, though, so it won't produce as shallow DOF.

@@DustinAbbottTWI it just replaced my 6d which provided 10 years of service and still works. These Canon DSLR bodies last for ages, even my first DSLR the 10D I bought in 2003 still works after buying a new battery.

Mr. EverHandsome, love your shirt .. what I love is your video framing with things that catch the eye which is pleasing to the eye. I see some reviewers on here, claiming to be experienced photographers, and filling up their faces into the frame to the extent that you can barely watch more than 2 mins straight! So, for a small business person on a budget is the 5D IV still a worthwhile investment in 2020 compared to a mirrorless system and its lenses which is pretty much twice the cost!?

I'm actually in the process of selling my 5D Mark IV because I'm going all in on mirrorless, but the camera is still a very good one. I just find that I enjoy mirrorless more. So, if you want to buy a very nice condition 5DIV with CLog, 25K actuations on the shutter, and a 64GB CF card at a good price, let me know.

Hey Dustin. For birds in flight and tracking, do you think the 5d mark IV is close to the 1Dx Mark II? I am looking for an upgrade for my 1d mark IV and debating the 7d Mark II, 5D IV and 1Dx II. What would you do? Putting crop factor aside.

The 1Dx II is going to be your best bet if tracking is your priority. The 5D Mark IV is good, but not on the same level.

Dustin Abbott thank you. I remember when I owned the 5d Mark III, even though it had the same AF system as the 1Dx, it still didn’t do as well as my current 1d Mark IV. So it sounds like the 1Dx II is my only good upgrade option. Definitely costly, but I may get a used one.

I use the Fine Detail mode, with settings of 4,3,1, and +1 on Saturation. I have all noise reduction aids turned off.

Wow! Seriously people said you wasted your money? You and a lot of people just don't get it then. I had a 5Diii and sold it got out if photography for a while. Got back into it working with a friend who uses Nikon. So I bought a D810. As much as I love my D810 there's things Canon does so well. For me ergonomics are second to none. Canon's to me fit my hand amazing. I feel the biggest draw is their color science though. Everyone is so stick on extreme sharpness and high mp count. Long story short when the time is right Id love to have a 5D in my bag along side my Nikon gear. Personally you can't go wrong with either. So with all that said I feel you made a great decision. Thanks for the video you make a ton of great points. Also I think you made a great decision based on your needs.

The 80D is very versatile and an excellent value. If you don't need full frame I think it would work nicely for you. I own one and think it's great.

It's true. I feel like I burn through batteries quicker than what I have with any 5D or 6D model. That's not to say you don't get hundreds and hundreds of shots, but it has always felt before that I scarcely had to worry about batteries unless I had something really huge to shoot. That's not the case anymore.

Andy Keeble I would probably definitely add the 17mm T/S. I really like the new 35L II, also. I'd add the Otus 85 and probably the Milvus 1.4/50mm. A 200mm f/2 IS wouldn't hurt.

I agree it's a great camera, and hits a lot of the marks I look for in a new rig. The biggest negs of course are all related to the fact that for a long overdue upgrade, they could have done a lot more. (I'm not a video shooter or there'd be more negatives haha). Hopefully firmware updates will address a few of those shortcomings (including focus peaking and Zebra patterning), but I'm sure Magic Lantern will get their updates out while we're waiting for the Canon Turtle to sort their $hiz out. Awesome unbiased review as always, keep em comin!

Hey Dustin, thanks for the informative review. It seems like most photographers see the Mark4 as a huge upgrade from the Mark III, and it's mostly those that use a lot of 4k that are disappointed. I've heard mostly great things about the IV from most pure Tog reviewers that I respect.. Matt Granger liked it, but noticed some exposure shift. Call me old fashioned, but I am pretty happy with 1080p, but then I don't shoot much video. Have you had a chance to try your Super Takumar on it yet?

I personally chose the 5D Mark IV. I think it would be a better option for wildlife because of the ability to crop quite deeply before you hit the pixel density of the 1DX II. The 1DX II has the better frame rate and buffer, though, so it depends on how often you will be doing huge bursts as a part of your workflow.

My only problem. I had to buy a 5D III in the spring to accommodate need, and now have 5 new bodies since owning my 5D IV day of release, and looking to sell the III LOL. The first day of owning the new 5D IV, I snapped off over 3000 shots with a multitude of lenses (micro adjusting as well as just for fun photos), and instantly I was gratified that all the complaining about the specs was nothing but hot air. I couldn't express more how happy I bought this new camera day of release.
