17:11 "Long exposure noise reduction" means when you take a long exposure - say 30sec at ISO 3200 - the camera will shoot a "dark frame" and subtract this from your first image. You you need double the time, but the image gets cleaner because the camera gets rid of hot pixels and other artefacts.

I have had this camera for more than a year, used it a few times all on [A] then left it in a corner to collect dust (off course I kept it in a good bag)! I read the manual back and forth, went on the internet several times listening to different instructors. People usually start very slow but then get so fast that you can't follow what they said or how they moved their fingers. This is the very first time that I really learned a lot, followed the video all the way to the end and I am encouraged to start practicing and using this EOS-R camera again. I want to thank you very much for your hard work.

This is exactly the kind of video I would have expected the camera companies to make for their customers. It's the reason why I've never bought an SLR because nobody is there to help you use it. I might actually consider buying one now, especially as I have also started a KZbin Channel. Thanks so much!

49:42 I love having 2 self timers. I use the 10 second timer when I use a tripod and I want to be in the picture. 10 seconds gives me enough time to walk in the picture and strike a pose. I use the 2 second timer when I’m taking long expo. I push the button the camera has a 2 second delay (not a long 10 second wait) and the camera & tripod become still and no shake in it. My long expo picture comes out crisp and clean! This is why I like/love 2 self timers.

I have a classic family photo taken in the early 1980s of me caught making the running turn around the end of the group trying to get into the photo. 2 seconds was not long enough. The camera was a Rolleiflex 2.8E. In the early 1960s, I had positioned myself on the end so the trip was brief. With digital equipment, 10 seconds has proven to be very helpful. I don't move quite as fast these days.

Hi Mate you convinced me to buy the Eos R and it was a great decision. have had it for 4 days and set things up as you suggested. Just shot a Theatre job at 4000ASA with the 70-200 2.8 mate it rocks. The colour the lack of grain most importantly the live exposure feedback makes this an awesome bit of kit. I would have normally shot with a 5ds and the grain would have sucked and it would have cost hours in post. The only thing i hate so far about the eos R is that as soon as you turn a flash on the ambient exposure simulation is terminated and you get whatever the camera thinks will give you a good preview. Totally useless for controlled fill flash Canon needs to be harassed about this as it would be an easy firmware fix. Every pro uses fill flash so it makes sense to cater for pro needs.. Keep doing what you are doing it really helps people. Thanks mate

Jared, Thank you for excellent tutorial. I just want to add one thing about GPS. You just skipped that part saying it is for people who have GPS devices. I've personally found rating quite useful, just to be able to keep track of what the talent might've really liked (which photo they personally want used), or to just keep track of which photos you like best to review later. The release w/o lens option is for shooters who are using a vintage lens that have no communication capabilities with the camera. It allows the camera to release the shutter even though it doesn't know there's an old lens on it.

The lens retract feature is useful for non L lenses. Pick up the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8. Let that thing autofocus and then you’ll see why that feature is there. Thanks for keeping me company while driving through ridiculous LA traffic with this video. And, I agree with you, most of the features I don’t touch much at all and leave it at default. And, there’s a lot of redundancy. But, that’s probably for people who like to menu dive.

FYI: the RF 35 prime benefits from the 'Retract lens when power off' feature since the front element moves depending on the focus distance
@PrendosNewZealandLimited5 жыл бұрын
Glenn Ferreira as does the old EF 85 1.2 and since its focus by wire you can't retract it after disconnecting. So it's super handy to use this feature so you don't have to move it to infinity. On the other hand it will leave you having to refocus when you turn it back on, which isn't that handy if you have everything locked off on a tripod and just want it off to save power for a bit.

Jared. Excellent video. The R is a superb system. Very complicated but you get the hang of it after you’ve customised all the settings to your taste or preference. Very quickly: at 45:29, Retract Lens On Power Off. Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a focus by wire lens that retracts back to zero when you power off. How it works is, say you focus to infinity, the front of the lens “zooms” out. If you turn off this setting you discussed just here, the lens will not retract on power off. I think there are quite a few Canon lenses that share similar functionality.
@PaulKretz6 жыл бұрын
It concerns STM lenses only and there is quite a number of them, but the feature is about the ones with moving front part, e.g.: EF-S 24 and EF 50 or 40.

Figured out the lens retracting! It works on e.g. primes that extend when focusing (like my 50mm 1.8). Turns out to be pretty useful, I don't have to manually push it in anymore when I finish shooting. A small detail, but quite pleasant!

With the pre RT Canon flash, you can use a 580 EX/II (and probably 600 RT) on camera to control off-camera flash via IR without firing and messing up your lighting, so it does kind of make sense to have a flash in not fire mode. Great tutorial.

Joe A7Rii big up to the Fro for taking time out to make this video. I’ve got the R and one thing is for sure. You can watch this or a similar video 5 times a day, there’s nothing that beats actually holding it in your hand and step through session by session. Disabling external flash function is actually very useful when you preset your custom setting I and II. If you shoot interiors for example you can have one setting for bracketing exposures and the other function for single exposure with flash. In this scenario you don't have to switch your flash in and off for bracketing.
