at the same time almost any camera can be good in the right lighting conditions... for me at least i would love to have full frame more for the dynamic range and low light capabilties. you can just get a better image with it without having to worry too much about the natural lighting. i rock a sony a6500 and would love to upgrade to the next a7siii when that ever comes out.

Owen Pesnell Yep, that would be pretty interesting, however Arri will definitely win: highlight rolloff on Arri is simply the best and so the dynamic range on that camera is just astounding and beats everything. Red isn’t even close to Arri, there are a lot of side to side comparisons, so I’d assume Bmpcc4k will be below those two or maybe on par with Red, but definitely below Arri

All our latest travel videos were shot with the M50. We chose it as our first "real" camera as a step up from phones and we are pretty happy about the choice and the results. I think the value for the money is hard to beat! The thing that could be better is definetely the IS. We are still playing around with the settings though and shooting faces, we have a hard time not showing every pore and dot on our faces (too many details/too clear?).... tips for that are welcome! =)

I have both. Cool thing about the M50 is that you can VLog in 1080 to keep that awesome focus and when you need to do scenery or anytime you are behind the camera, you can go to 4k and get more detail. Love both and I also shoot RED as well!

Honestly hard to tell difference when looking on iPhone. If anything m50 looks more appealing and r is having trouble focusing...might be due to lens. Also wasn’t comparing with same aperture (again due to lens). Probably possible to get m50 to produce better quality with 32mm lens to bridge the gap with your r.

The 11-22 lens for the M50 is stabilised whereas the 16-35 f2.8 L is not, so the fair comparison would be using the 16-35 f4 IS (you cannot vlog without stabilised body or lens IMO). You suddenly lose most of your f-stop advantages. So in the end you pay 3700 bucks for better low light - which is very nice - but is it worth it? I don't think so. Plus a small camera is way more usable for vlogging, much more important than lowlight or shallow depth of field...

While that is true, did you notice that even with the un-stabilized lens the R looked significantly more steady than the m50 did? I own both of these setups and that comparison was very surprising to me.

I know it’s an old video but I just got the 16mm sigma 1.4 for the m50 and it’s amazing in low light now. You can almost, ALMOST run around anywhere at night with an iso of just 100-300 and it looks fantastic.

The lenses make a huge difference in image quality. It is hard to judge the M50 performance if you use a much worse lense. It could be an issue of the 10-18mm and not the body. The good part of buying one of these mirrorless cameras is that you can change the lense if needed! Could you try the 15-35mm on the M50? Just to be able to judge the body and not the lense

The retained detail is really just sharpening that's being applied in post. You can see the typical halo effect that's common with after sharpening at 5:12 around the edge of the building. On 6:25 it's even more noticable on the small pillar. There's this really contrasty line at the edge of the shadow that really shouldn't be there. You can get the same kind of sharpness in post in like 2 minutes with the m50

I love your videos, but I have to make a couple of comments about this one. I've just viewed it on my 50" plasma screen TV, and the differences you're describing are nowhere near as marked at lower ISOs as you seem to suggest. Although I don't use my M50 for vlogging, I actually DO use L Series glass on an M50, a 200D, and 5D iv for both stills and video, and I'd venture to suggest that many of the subtle differences you comment on between the two cameras would be all but eradicated if you were to put pro grade lenses on the M50. Obviously the M50 can't match the 5D or EOS R at higher ISOs, but it's not designed to. The obvious thing is to have both, and intercut the footage, but PLEASE level out the playing field by putting the best glass possible on both.

In the A7III comparison, you should also try recording externally to get the absolute best outputs out of both cameras, since the Sony and Canon both output 4:2:2, but the Canon also outputs in 10-bit. I'd really like to see how much of a difference it makes on KZbin to have that extra color space.

No, the EOS R was doing better in fact. The DoF at 2.8 is much shallower than 4.5. It did loose focus but recovered in a more natural way. If you look at the background on the m50 it's more or less in focus unlike teh eos r.

Dual pixel AF knows exactly if the subject is in front or behind focus plane (benefit of this technology). Also once focused it is easier for camera to keep focus with shallow depth of field since it is easier to calculate when subject moves in and out. No excuse really, just slow processing and old sensor tech.

When you look at the difference in price I don't think you can compare these two. Great video though! I got a brand new M50 setup for less than £600 (body, lens, mic and flash). Consider the fact that it does most of the stuff a camera several times its cost as well or nearly as well (and it wins on autofocus against many) then it wins hands down. Most people thinking of buying a £600 camera wouldn't dream of spending £3000 on an alternative choice!

Michael Scanlon A LOT idk what the hell he was thinking, the glass is what improves quality, sensor size is for lowlight stuff and ISO, I use some EF lenses on my M50’s which you can see on my channel.

You certainly see diminishing returns when you spend that much. But the M50 is kind of like a better smartphone camera in some ways. In ideal conditions it works pretty darn well but as soon as light is lacking, shaking is introduced or features like high frame rate slow-mo are activated, you really start to see what you pay for in the EOS R.

Hi, thanks for the videos, it has helped me a lot to understand how to make videos. I'm a hairdresser and I'm going to start recording video lessons, we'll use two DSLR canon SL2, one to film the whole complete space (me, the model and assistant) and for that purpose what canon lens tells me? the second camera will be used to film only the head of the model to better show how I am cutting the hair of the same, and for this camera what lens tells me? in short, a lens to film three people and another lens to just to film the model's head. It does not have to be lenses with good focus because the background of the scene is totally white. I need good, inexpensive lenses to film my course.

Love the M50 been using it for my videos for the past 2-3 months, best hands down! For professional projects I use my Sony A7Sii but for a one man rig, M50 is the way to go.

I have the M50 and it's a great choice for vlogging. I think the 15-45 is a better kit lens choice though. 11mm isn't that far away from 15mm for most vlogging itself, but that extra reach of 45mm rather than 22mm for b-roll etc is really beneficial
