I believe the overheating drama is the result of Canon's decision to market the R5 as an 8K video camera, the R5 and R6 are still cameras, that can shoot video. Reviewers are trying to force this camera to be a professional video solution which it is not. Canon has been very transparent about the heat and limitations in certain video modes, it should be no surprise the camera overheats! I am a professional Wedding and Event photographer who shoots 95% stills and the occasional video, the R5 fits my workflow perfectly.

Well when you have 8K as a feature its hard to argue its just a stills camera. It is a very good stills camera but if 8K is not ready they should have left it off.

@@davva360 it may be because Canon wanted to tell the world canon was the first to introduce 8K in fullframe camera, but now canon faces the pressure from this. You remember Sony is the first to introduce 4K in such fullframe camera (correct me if I'm wrong).

Many reviews have mentioned the 8K resulted in barely warm cameras unlike the much warmer A7S3, so either the R5 insulates the heat and keeps it inside or Canon was over cautious and could allow it to double recording time

I'm guessing it insulates the heat. Some KZbinrs said they were curious about the fact the R5 wasn't affected much by the sun (basically, using it outdoors or indoors didn't affect how fast it overheated).

It insulates heat, it's not that they were over cautious. If that was the case then the camera wouldn't take two hours to completely cool down.

Not really, AMD had bad drivers for its GPUs, Windows and Intel with bad security vulnerabilities; par for course when you push the limits of performance like 8K. First adopters always deal with these birthing complications

Since the camera is years old everyone should know what he is buying into and if someone has decided to buy it then it's his choice. In anyway do you know a Sony that would overheat and not start for like 20 to 30 minutes? Old or new any example would do. In the end Sony do sell them but doesn't tell you that they are just released cameras. Ps you are talking as if if you buy Sony you have no choice but to buy camera that would overheat.

All of the reports indicate that the hull stays relatively cool... this is VERY bad as it indicates the heat is stuck in some confined volume. My guess is the image chip/package and the CPU. I can imagine that a big problem of cooling the imaging chip itsel has to do with IBIS. The ability to shift the sensor means that it can't (!!) be properly thermally connected to the outer hull. I suppose this is THE biggest problem. On top of that the CPU will obviously also produce some heat but this can be thermally bridged to the magnesium hull better.

Now that the A7sIII cooling solution is out, they use some sort of heat dissipating shell + thermal compounds. Cannon has a roadmap to replicate this too. Wouldn't surprise me if Canon will recall them to retrofit a similar cooling solution. They might be working on it right now.

The R5 feels cool to the touch because it’s super insulated, that’s why it can’t cool down - that’s also why temperature doesn’t seem to effect the overheating - the outside is cool but the inside is super hot - the heat can’t escape, that’s why even after 2 hours it’s still overheated

My preorder for the R5 was on July 11th through B&H. After I preordered, I thought to myself that I probably should've pre-ordered from a less popular shop to have a chance at actually getting the camera. At this point, it's still listed as "Backordered" with no indication as to when I'll get it. I decided to stick with the R5, as it's still what I want in a camera. IF they are working on a hardware fix and that's the reason my order is delayed longer, I'm actually ok with that. No rush, as long as they get it right. If by some miracle they are able to completely abolish overheating, then I think it can put it neck and neck to Sony's A7SIII. But as of right now, Sony is the clear winner from a video perspective.

I got my R5 yesterday, I am not going to defend it because I have not used it enough. I might even send it back.... BUT, people who are crying about over-heating should realize that this is NOT a cinema camera! is not even a video-centric camera like the a7Siii, so if you are going to be in a movie studio this is clearly not a camera you should invest in. Same way I would not buy a cinema camera to take pictures. Canon fucked up by bragging and touting about this camera's video features, they should have advertised it for what it is, an upgrade to the 5Dmk4 that takes great short video clips, and that's it. Some day I'll buy a C200 or C300, that is if I get into filmmaking that requires long recordings. Right now I do short promo videos and music shorts, and the R5 is perfect for that.

Wow, Armando surely changed tact pretty quickly. I remember watching his R5 preview or review, people were already complaining about the overheating issue and he was so defensive about it. Looks like he now knows how serious it is. As for the delay, I think Canon top level management now realizes how massive an issue they have created for themselves. The R5 is supposed to be a statement piece to announce to the world Canon has finally caught up and perhaps even surpassed the current mirrorless offerings in the market. They knew about the overheating problem, but yet they still chose to go ahead with the launch, now it is coming back to bite them. Personally, I am not convinced firmware will be able to resolve the issue, it might mitigate it, but I don't think it will be enough when the problem is this severe. Even if we are not talking about active cooling like using a fan, they might have to seriously consider a range of aggressive passive cooling measures such as vents and heat sinks.

Hi, I enjoyed your video very informative. I have been watching loads of vids on the EOS R5 as i had pre ordered, but i'm very concerned about all the issues that are surfacing namely the battery percentage has to be no less than 60% when shooting 10fps or more. This is a deal breaker for me as i shoot a lot of motor sports. The overheating doesn't concern me that much as I don't shoot a lot of video. I'll just have to persevere with the 5D mkiv buffers limitations when shooting RAW at high speed.

Gerald Undone has done a interesting review on the R5 and R6 using them to live stream. The R6 didnt overheat after 2.5hrs 4k 30fps but at 60fps looks as though it will still oveheat.

My bet on a74: Same processor as a7s3. Flip screen yes, no fast cards, no top highest 600mb/s quality, 10 bit yes, 422 yes, new menu definitely (wondering if future updates will apply new menu to a73, a7r4 or a92 to unify), wish to be albe to tansfer menu settings to/from sd card. same AF as a7s3. 4k60frames. No 120. Same body as latest models. Active stabilization. Price $2199-2299. Spring 2021 What you think? My wish… won’t happen, I’m positive, higher resolution from 24 to 30. Would love to crop or zoom sometimes and 24 its just a tiny bit not enough quite often. There must be some Sacrifice for great low light condition recording.

They can probably increase their thermal limit that they've set but canon has always been conservative with heat management. They're probably better off making another R body with R5 sensor that ditches the insulation, weather sealing, adds heat pipes like in the 1dx and gets the heat out. Photographers will love the R5 for what it is if they've got the Canon glass already. I hope canon just does a firmware update if they do want to change this and make it clear that it is designed for short short videos. My thoughts exactly. I am a professional wedding shooter and preordered the R5 for stills. I have two 5D4s, a 1DX and 1DXII and have never shot video on any of them. Canon should have released the R5 as a still camera first that could shoot 8K video with limitations. They should have designed a second R5 body for video. Clearly ,video shooters want a smaller body for their workflow. Canon could have included a fan or better heat sinks which would allow the camera to shoot 8K video all day without overheating. I love Canon but they clearly missed the mark with this release.

My OPINION, is that Canon should not have included 8K because it clearly can not handle it. Sony had some issues in the past with over heating and I was just as critical. If it is not ready for release DON'T release it. Camera users need to step back from the hype and demand higher standards from the manufacturers.

Unfortunately, they overpromised and underdelivered. The 8k-R5 was hyped as the photographer's holy grail for the last six months. It was going to put Sony and Nikon out of business. It wasn't marketed as a 45 mp stills camera but as the first 8k video camera that could do it all. I hope the early adopters get a new camera if they do a redesign, instead of just a firmware update. Sony has had a 6k (24mp) chip downsampled to 4k in their APSC cameras for the last few years. It took only 6 months for Sony to release the A6500 to replace the overheating A6300. A6300 users didn't get a new camera, but just an ineffective firmware update. Will be interesting to see how Canon handles this.

i think... canon has to juz gotta rely on their printers sales for tis season - its very much over for them tis round.. And IF they do improve the firmware(marginally at best), by the time they r ready to relaunch, the a7iv would oredi be "camping for a headshot on the R6".. a single R5 versus a7Siii & a7iv will b a slaughter - from sales standpoint.. companies do make mistakes from time to time, and its fine(ie. a6300); BUT, to make such critical mistake in the midst of a global pandemic is gonna be extremely damaging for canon.. imho, all canon staff including investors & CEO & marketing and sales who pushed and supported the idea of implementing 8K for the R5 needs to be fired..
