Of course it's reset you clear the memory and real time clock when you remove the internal battery because there's no power to keep memory or clock going.. I'm guessing Canon is going off of time and didn't put multiple thermo circuits on the PCB to know the real temperatures around the board/body. Without being able to measure what the actual temperature is on multiple different sections you would have to revert to a wide safe time block that you know all parts would be cooled down in no matter the ambient which would be reset when the register is cleared by having no power.

Kaad Home , I’m thinking the same thing, a lack of thermal sensors and you’re basically running blind. The shown temperatures are VERY hot for such a camera so I do believe canon had no bad Intension here shutting it down. The cool down time is obviously decreased when exposing the internals to room temperature air, during usage it is weather sealed(!!!), insulating it way more.

Glad to see you followed up on this news of the Eos R5, keep the pressure on man, btw still waiting for mine, but I am on a sample unit from canon at the moment and with the style of shooting I’ve been doin, ie short clips here and there with 4k 120 i have no real issues so far 😊

It’s obvious that the circuit board and cpu cool off faster if you open up the case!!!! That’s a useless argument! Also, 65 deg C is very hot for a camera even internally. Not all electronics can withstand heat like laptops, especially not imaging devices. If you ask me, this proofs that the camera actually IS overheating. I expect them to fix the cool down timer, but not the temperature limit!

These test need to be done with the back on and the camera fully sealed not when the mainboard is exposed to normal ambient temperatures, the test is pointless otherwise

The entire test was done while the back cover was removed, the camera still overheat and make you wait for 1 hour. Removing the battery you can shoot immediately! how is it pointless?
@dpenn555
@dpenn555 3 жыл бұрын
Jason k it’s pointless because the camera stated it overheated but as all the test have shown it actually doesn’t so we can clearly conclude from this that this is probably time based, what we need to know is why. Is this time based limitation due to the fact that if the camera is fully sealed Canon is estimating the eventual build up of heat based on time. What needs to be known is what is the actual internal temp when the camera is fully sealed and are Canon being to conservative. It is obvious if this is time based removing the internal non volatile battery will reset the internal error. So it is pointless as the camera is not designed to be used with the back off and the internal battery removed to resolve the heat issues

You just don’t get it. The PCB may be cooler but look at the other components, they are still over heating. Not to mention the sensor. When Canon makes a camera it is built to last a very long time. The engineers design the software and hardware to take that into consideration. Resetting the timer by removing a battery may give you more time but I can guarantee that won’t last as long and then when a warranty issue comes up you complain it’s not well designed if it fails after hacking the time limits. First it was “ maybe 8k but only for 1 minute, or 5 minutes” then Canon said, “no, more than that” but they never said you could film without limits. No cripple hammer just physical limitations on a 45M pixel sensor.

I wonder if that’s the reason it’s only $3900.00 vs the $6k it was rumored. I would of been happy paying $4500 to have unlimited features. Or they should of made the r6 more video centric and just charge $3500 like the A7siii, unless not enough people are buying $3500 video centric cameras

Think deeply people. The body has some of the best weather sealing in the business. It takes a long time for the heat to dissipate from within the weather sealed body . In these tests, the back of the camera has been completely removed, which effectively gives you the best air circulation scenario. if you start tinkering with, and removing these limitations set forth by Canon on your sealed camera, you will eventually fry it. It may last for a few months to a year with these hacks, but after the damage builds up and you have destroyed the circuitry, you have thrown your $5000 down the drain.either way, this does not end well for canon, or you as a videographer.

@charlesandaloro7709 3 жыл бұрын
David Spearman I agree with you totally. Overheating, not normal heat tolerances, shortens the life of electrical components. Canon must know this, which is why they set a timer instead of checking temperature. The temperature was probably tested in a lab long ago and they set the limits to avoid a bunch of returns and or repairs in the near future.

Having a heat shut off that doesn't measure heat seems a bit nonsensical, no?
@controllverse4013
@controllverse4013 3 жыл бұрын
@@arthursese6068 Only measuring heat is risky when selling hundreds of thousands of units. Trust - Canon has destroyed many R5s in the lab development of this product. Unlike Andrew Reid, the lab team BUILT the camera and is not reverse engineering coin battery functions, so they probably ran exhaustive tests for a year or more on the overheating component. They realized they would get lawsuits if they sold a $4000 camera that would burn itself out in a short period of time (with risky timer and shutdown protocols). Safest method is to impose tried and true conservative time limit. Recalls and replacements are bad business. They should've skipped 8k and 4khq marketing altogether. 5dii didn't market the video feature...

I am not sure why Andrew is personally making a big fuss about all of it. Canon promised an average lifetime of the camera in terms of shutter count. I am not sure the value is but they need to respect the avareage value. If setting the time limit the way they did it, keeps that promise, given to customers, then Canon has the obligation to set a limit regardless of Andrew's opinion. Andrew is doing (or spreading) a deterministic test and concludes what his brain can reach, without taking statistical and probabilistic considerations into account. If Andrew is really that smart (and fair) he should complete probabilistic test of the camera as well. Burn the camera as long as you need, and let see how long it will stay alive after that. It is up to you, the user, but if you want to burn your camera within a month, then listen to what he says. But if you want it to serve you as per official shutter count, then accept the limit as it is. You do have the right to bring it up to public opinion, and that is fair, but to make it the purpose of your life, is another matter. As far as I am concerned, Andrew, and all KZbinrs who spread his "opinion" need to focus on making art. That's who we are. Learn what are the limitations of the gear and use it. If you are not smart enough to use that gear, buy something else. But please, produce art not false publication. We are better than that.

This is bullshit. Canon is lying. You rationalizing lying by speculating why the camera may need to cool down in order to extend its lifespan, is not a sound argument. It may very well be why they did it, but it also may not be. Either way, these companies need to be upfront with these kinds of issues.
@GraphicMill

It’s not the internal battery that is causing the overheating issue, it’s the fact that when the battery is removed, the cameras software resets and the cripple hammer usage limitation is set back to full function. Canon could fix this cripple bullshyt in a simple firmware update and remove this limitation completely. The cameras could then be set up to operate fully until it actually did overheat. But will Canon even acknowledge that this camera is heavily crippled and will they remove this cripple so their users can grow with the R5? If this camera actually worked as it should, I might have considered moving back to Canon... but I have bought into Sony and I have the a7SIII coming. Canon, you idiots, you’re pushing customers away!! I don’t trust you to have my back, so, I’m out!
