I had the r6 and shoot wildlife with the 800mm f11. I sold the r6 for the r5 because I still need the 45 mp and ability to crop and don't lose too much details. The r6 is definitely good and videos are good as well but for my needs the r5 is better.

Coming from the 6DMKII.. When I picked up the R5.. Hory Chit! I absolutely am amazed with the autofocus system. Shooting speed, silent shutter.. Video functionality & options.. I also have an EOS-R. There is a way to shoot 4K & 8K in any heat situation without overheating.. using an Atomos Ninja V.. It's an awesome hack for those doing video. You have the Rear Screen & evf shut off after a couple minutes & it won't overheat.

Good stuff Conor, pretty much sums up the R5 accurately. As a stills enthusiast, I went for the R, as it dropped in price before covid struck as the R5, R6 came out. Loved the 5DIV but saw the RF mount as being canons future hence the R selection and given it’s similar internally to the 5DIV. The R5 is very pricey given its Achilles heel....think you gave it a fair and honest review. Hard job starting from scratch on KZbin indeed, wishing you good luck and keep at it.... frame by frame they will come... good luck brother....

thanks for the video, interesting point of view, I'm a stills photographer, mostly portraits, my previous cameras were the 5D3 and 5Dsr and the switch to the R5 has been a game-changer, eye autofocus, and the manual focus assist tools are amazing, my only complaints are the battery life and the crappy electronic shutter files

I've owned my R5 for 14 months. I shoot wildlife primarily birds in flight. The AF is great, rolling shutter is a non event for 99% of what I shoot and if I'm in a situation where rolling shutter might be an issue I use mechanical. I'm using an 8 year old EF600 f4 mk2 with a 1.4EX mk3 and it hits focus quickly and accurately. At its price point, it doesn't have any competition.

Bought the R5 for the autofocus and the high frame rates. It is great. Don't do a lot of video, but produced a few company videos (talking head style) and edited without issues a the mac mini. Got some amazing RF glass as well and I am really happy with the R5. Probably the R6 would have worked as well - used to shoot 6D and 6DmkII. But I did not want to go back to 20 MP. ;-)

Interesting review dude! I actually love the R5, I do a lot of fashion/ studio work, film and photography and it's great for that. Longer form content I can imagine it's a bit frustrating, have you updated the software? That's improved the overheating greatly. Now the R5C has completely fixed this issue but it's also much heavier and bigger, for me that's not what I want, but if I was shooting long-form content such as interviews etc, I would probably invest in an atmos Ninja to do external recording. Also, editing the footage on a mac M1 isn't so bad, but it's not smooth. Overall, to support this camera, you need to add an extra £4k onto your budget lol. Painful times. Keep up the good work, you'll be on 100k subs in no time.

Welcome to the grind, I just hit 1000k subs a few months ago. Secret tech shoot 4K 60p or 4K 24p in crop mode. It looks amazing because it down scales 5k unlike the line skipped mode in full frame. Also it doesn’t over heat. What I’ve been doing is Rocking the 15-35mm F2.8 mostly. I’ll use full frame for some establishing shots when needed but mostly sit on crop mode for professional work. 21-52.5mm F2.8 is a good rage to do mostly anything documentary like and that down sampled 5k looks amazing.

I will be buying the R5, probably as a Christmas present. I currently have a 5D Mark IV and love it, but I shoot a lot of wildlife and Birds in Flight and the AF and eye tracking on the R5 is what has me sold. A good friend upgraded to the R5 from the 5D4 and has no regrets. If I were more into video I might feel differently, but for what I like to shoot I'm confident the R5 will be a great camera. I still plan to keep the 5D IV as a second body, but I'm really looking forward to the R5.

think it all depends on what you shoot. I just upgraded from my sony a7r3 (42meg) to the sony a1 (50meg). The 30 frames per second, amazing autofocus is worth every penny. The dynamic range, resolution are barely different. The color science is better, but shot for shot its pretty much speed and autofocus that is what we are paying for now in new cameras. I print up to 4 x 8 foot so resolution is important, but where do we go from here? I can see my new A1 lasting a long time. All these new cameras are amazing, canon, sony or nikon. You really can't go wrong, but like you said investing in the glass is the big deal.

My R5 is an amazing stills camera, the af is next level, and blows every sony out of the water in af terms, except the a1. The a1 has slightly better af, but... no bird eye af tracking in video mode. I shoot dragonflys in flight - no problem. Yes, I could do this on my 5d3 and 5d4, but the r5 really has next livel af, and makes this task rediculously easy. The continous shooting and fast buffer clearing with a fast cfexb card, is eyeopening. Bang of 150full raws at 12fps before the frame rate slows down to 2fps. Lift my finger, then go again. I do shoot video with my R5, but short clips only to demonstrate some amazing wildlife behaviour, thus overheating is not an issue for me

Thank you for this… I currently have a Sony A7riii and am a self shooter only. The problem is the app doesn’t allow for touch focus, and the eye af seems to pick up the closest thing to the camera and it’s just unreliable. for what o do anyway… and I can’t do creative shoot throughs or anything like that because it will focus on whatever is in front :/ Hence why I’m looking at the canon lineup because the app does allow for touch focus. I was specifically looking at the r5 because I need the extra pixels to crop into… so confused now lol I can’t connect to the canon app because well, I don’t have a canon so I can’t see if it alllows for continuous shooting which I do on my Sony. Camera is obviously on a tripod so weight isn’t an issue for me… any suggestions? Have you used the canon app? Some say it’s very very slow.. I guess nothing is perfect sadly

I've never had my r5 overheat or even give the heat warning. For the most part I don't do any long form shooting and haven't shot any 4k 120 or 8k other than testing. One reason I bought the r5 over the R6 is the way I understand it, they both overheat but the r5 at least can still record regular 4k 24p no matter what whereas the r6 has no 4k mode that is heat resistant.

I literally just had a 15 strand conversation (argument) with someone that swore up and down the R5/R6 overheating was not a "thing." Needless to say, he lived by his comments. I agree, the R5/R6 are great cameras with a major flaw. I wanted to upgrade soooo badly to an R5/6 (ended up getting Sony FX3). I wonder why people deny this so strongly. Like, it's not your fault but we can't just lie or overlook something that major. The battery is the only thing we should be worried about when it comes to "time running out" for these cameras. Great video!

I have a Canon R which is good for portrait work but I also shoot wildlife. At launch, I found the R6 to be more suitable, as I do not shoot video at all. The R6 has served me well, but I have started to shoot some auto racing and boxing, and depending on venue, and even with some wildlife, I end up cropping a bit, so I will be upgrading to the R5. I waited to see what the R3 would be, but mainly, I am looking for the added resolution. I enjoyed your video, but the benefits of the R5 over the 5DIV go way beyond image quality. Mirrorless offers so many advantages that just make things such a pleasure. The EVF lets you see exactly what your shot will be. The eye autofocus is amazing, whether human or animal, and makes using super fast glass just that much easier and gives a higher hit rate. The faster FPS also are a significant upgraded (obviously depending on what you shoot) but for me its definitely a huge plus. Everybody has different needs depending on subject. I love the R6, but after shooting for over a year and expanding my subject matter, I will love the R5 and think the value is worth it.

Nice concise film, here is my few £££ of observations. I have shot using 5D, 5DIII, 5DIV, 1DsIII, EOS R, C300MKII, C100MKII, XF 305, 5DS 5DS R AND R5. I shoot stills for magazines with Celebs, Landscape up to 30ft images, TV Broadcast and online outreach films. Canon never failed me since 2005 and the prime considerations are usability and colour. If I am filming anything I always HDMI or SDI out to Ninja Inferno or Ninja V - ProRes HQ. The external colours to ProPres are amazing and consistent too. If I had to set standards to cameras as we do in TV at The DPP then 15 minutes would be the maximum I would expect to ‘rely’ on DSLR or Mirrorless size bodies. Anything above that time I would suggest the Cinema range that are designed to run for film continuously. I have just shot several films using EOS R. R5 and C300 MKII and the skin tones are perfectly matched with like 2-3% post adjustments as the glass was all Canon however EF and RF with white balance set to 5600k with lighting from the Godox VL3000. Put simply if you are being paid to film, I think you should use as prime camera body that’s 100% designed to film and you will get perfection, using anything less than that and it’s a trade off but external ProRes is the way forward as it brings everything together with slick editing. While on editing, if you are a pro using large files than use a desktop and pay attention to the system requirements from cameras and Adobe on the minimum requirements but remember they are the minimum, if you want maximum super-fast editing times with complex editing then a laptop will bottleneck even in proxy set ups. Out in the field I take my Dell XPS 4K Laptop with I7 and GTX 1650 and 16GB of Ram but at Base I use an Alienware R8 i9 / RTX 2800 / 64gb Ram and water cooled but the secret is C Drive SSD 500GB / EDrive SSD 4TB / Gdrive SSD 120GB and its this drive that is my Adobe database for all my Proxy and fast reference files, Every Adobe App renders proxy’s here so its speeds up files and keeps heat down as less work to pull files through. Tip, on the R5 for film, even if you are recording internal, before you edit, transcode it after back up via media encoder, code all the internal files to ProRes HQ, its faster and lighter on the storage. As for stills, so many people I know were shooting on the 5DIV when I was still on the 5Ds 5dsR and up to ISO 800 under Profoto lights they were amazing quality. Their downfall was low light however they were deigned as studio cameras and that’s where they 100% performed. 5DIII produced images that I have sold upto 20X30FT world wide and never a complaint. Magazine print is poor quality, so you need the highest possible quality going in, the R5 is mind-blowing on detail every time and its skin tones are perfection. The R5 is still my run and gun go to for stills and fast shorter films and the EOS R is close behind as an all rounder but for stills the R5 does blow the EOS R out of the park for Skin tones, Blacks, dark shadows and pulling back from over exposed highlights and under exposed RAW files. Its Jpegs are nice but even with the sharp turned right down there is still a bit too much what I call ‘filters’ for want of a better term applied. Anyway, I have not come across the over heating yet but then again if I was shooting something over 15 minuets then the R5 would be my 3rd camera as a back up to a C range body. For me the best film camera for Weddings is 1080p to HDMI Ninja V ProRes HQ, complextion is perfect. We all have our preferences but from my point working around Europe, Canon does the job I need it to do and my clients like. Still a nice film this, great work.

Really nice video man, thanks. A good all round expert’s view on the R5; good and bad points, (that overheating ‘thing’ sounds like an instant ulcer, even if it doesn’t actually overheat. Nothing worse than unreliable kit, especially at a wedding and you are charging £££; Eeeeeeekkk !!). But as a stills camera - with the obligatory Apple M chipped computer ofc - it sounds like something to aspire to. (Also another reviewer was saying that the autofocus on the R5 is much better than on the R6; but I guess that’s why they can, why they do, charge the extra bucks ?!?). Thx again.

Just liked & subbed. My amateur guess is that the R5 won't be a waste at all, if stills is your stock in trade, even as an amateur. The video bit isn't everybody's cuppa tae, so it will affect a tiny percentage. One question is whether the R3 may be a better option for wildlife, landscapes and even a bit of astro. I did ask a few questions somewhere down below, if anyone cared to comment.

The review is old, and they've fixed the video issues with subsequent firmware. However, I agree; I haven''t taken a single video clip; I bought the camera for photography, and it's hands down the best body I've ever shot with. Everything about the viewfinder, focusing system, speed of the mechanical and the electronic shutter, color reproduction, dynamic range, and resolution are phenomenal. I suppose I should try out the video capabilities, but.. well, I don't care. As you said, it's not my cuppa.

Well, I'm not so big into video. But I decided to go for the R5 for following things: 1) Handling. Had the R5 vs. the A7IV in my hand. Loved the R5 2) Pixels. I shot on 24 MP before, which was fine most of the time. But there are these 5 photos I'd love to have with more pixels on a print. Ideal: 30-ish, like the A7IV. But not more than 50MP, too much data to push. So 45 ish is still in the range. 3) Moisture + Dust resistance. There is probably no better full frame camera with a better moisture resistance than the R5. I destroyed my last Nikon in the Jungle (humidity damage) That was sad. In addition I do think that with the new lens system, the Sony E-Mount won't be able to compete in the far future. So it was either Canon or Nikon. With my previous Nikon experience....It had to be the Canon. Greetings Finn

Every sub you have I'm sure you earned. Great breakdown in your video. I haven't experienced what you have experienced with the R5, but I appreciate hearing your perspective. One thing I'm having trouble understanding: Is the M1 chip really having trouble editing R5 files? I don't own a Mac, as I own a pc and I'm able to edit up to 8k with no problem in my machine, no need for proxies. I've heard the M1 was supposed to be great, I keep hearing that people struggle with the R5 files. Can you elaborate on what your experience is like? Excellent that you stressed multiple times this was "your" experience and "your" opinion. Totally fair that way, bravo. I bought my R5 at launch but it took a few months to get it and I knew full well about the overheating issue on high grade video. I had absolutely ZERO interest in filming at 8K and any 4k 120 I would ever do would be very short clips well below the threshold for overheating. I am primarily a 4k 60 shooter and I output most of my stuff to you tube at 1080p 30. Video is super secondary for me and I don't even use the R5 for it. I agree with you that video centric shooter should stay away from the R5 since other cameras can shoot 4k downsampled from 5k or 6k with no overheat threat. Like you said, 'why deal with extra stress'? I am a stills shooter and this R5 is the best stills camera Canon has ever made and perhaps the best ever made by anyone. The R5 will destroy the 5d mk IV with 50% more resolution, a VASTLY superior autofocus and tracking system, double the frame rate in mechanical or electronic, 2 stops additional dynamic range, the best IBIS in the business, AND.... wait for it... 100% perfect compatibility with all EF glass ever made with a simple adapter. IBIS may not matter to you and that's fair, but using exotic Canon EF glass like the 85 f/1.2 L and the 11-24/4 L and having IS in the body is a game changer since those lenses and many others do not offer IS optically in the lens. I also shoot with vintage lenses adapted and the IBIS is amazing for that plus the short flange distance in EOS R cameras opens up the use of vintage rangefinder lenses like Leica M and others. You should feel confident in recommending the R5 for stills shooters as there is no better camera at stills on the market today. For video it's a bit of a dumpster fire. Many people feel that Canon tends to nerf the video capability in their stills cameras to "protect" the cine line. I don't know if that's true but the R5 is solid evidence to support that theory.

Okay, so this is by far the best camera I've ever owned... But read on. I use it primarily for birds / BIF / wildlife, and landscapes. The auto eye focus is like magic. The 45 mp's are fantastic, both for cropping, and for producing large landscape prints with lots of detail, although I will still likely stitch 2 x 2's, or even 3 x 3's for 125 to 250 mp's 👍 I almost never shoot video. So I figured the overheating issue would never be a problem for me. But I have actually had it overheat (not to shut down, but to start warning me) with photo shooting only .. and that was on a 50F day.... Going to experiment with turning my LCD and viewfinder screens down to the down to the bare minimum....

Now, here I am, as a complete noob with only about 10k photos on DSLRs under the belt, researching - as an amateur - my next camera, to last me until I pass on. I am a tech savvy Baby Boomer, but I cannot afford to make a mistake. I want to take photos of a coffee table quality book, with photos and stories about life here in Africa. We often visit dusty, arid places where temps go well in excess of forty degrees centigrade, aka 104F, for those left behind in the 1960's. I would love to do some video, just for fun, but the ideal rig would be something mirrorless such as R5 with 100-500mm RF lens, or even that tank turret 800mm or 1200mm pro primes. (Lions don't brush, don't go near, it may become unpleasant.) One often has to shoot over distances of 800 - 2 000 yards, even more. Or, at ten feet, situation dependent. Light often is acutely bright and one would need to use a Polaroid or ND filter, at least. I have looked at M43 such as the big OM Systems E-M1 X or the new OM5, with 150-400mm zoom. The 2x crop would help over those long distances indeed, except when a cheet is in the shade of a tree while sunlight around it is very bright. I don't know what to be expecting then. I looked at the work of Diego Carin Martin and Peter Baumgartner; to the untrained eye, it reeks of perfection. Pro's may differ. Sony is on my radar, as is Fujifilm. I know very little about either, but my test unit of a Fuji 100-400mm on a TX-3 produced a soft end at the long reach, beyond 300mm, so I returned it. One idea was to take short 8k video, then take frame shots from that for stills, as the 8k would afford me better IQ and focus precision over the longer distances. Or that's what I presume. My gut feels says R5 with RF100-500, my wife wants R5 with RF70-200 f4. Comments welcome; I really need a bit of guidance.

Perhaps you need to update your video? Canon has added an option on the Canon R5 that allows the camera to record beyond its artificially imposed heat warning. Almost every review, post firmware 1.6 release, shows the R5 can capture 4 K video until the battery is drained. Canon still imposes the unneeded 30 minute recording limit however. I moved from a Canon R and R6 to the R5 because of the need to crop bird photography and wildlife. If you own an array of quality EF glass, the R5 still makes sense to purchase, provided you are primarily an photographer with some video needs, and you need to crop.

I've got a theory regarding camera manufacture. It's basically that the improvements in each camera that the manufacturers release, are so miniscule compared to the previous model, that it's almost always hardly worth upgrading. There seems to me to be not much difference between a camera that was released a year ago, and one that was released four years ago. I think basically we are being conned into upgrading our already more than capable gear. I shoot with a 14 year old camera, and I can still get results from it that I am more than happy with.

If you do both, recognize that there will be some limitations and compromises if you don’t have a dedicated rig for each function. I’m always amazed at how many guys buy a hybrid camera, spend a huge amount of money rigging it out for video, never actually shoot stills with it, then complain about how it sucks for video. ??? The way they’re using it, just use an actual video camera that does what you need it to do. Can’t afford that? Then accept that there will be limitations.

Correct. I do shoot video with my R5, but short clips only to demonstrate some amazing wildlife behaviour, thus overheating is not an issue for me. Shooting mostly video ? Simple solution for video; get the Ninja Atomos monitor, record externally and you will not have overheating issues on the R5. Look it up on KZbin, several videos on it. For me, l do surf videos snd Stills (see my KZbin channel Bali Surf Hunters). The R7 is /1/3 the price as the R5, the crop sensor is a bonus, increases my 400mm lens to 640mm. The autofocus is almost as good, video quality great. If you shoot portraits or landscape photography, the R5 would be a better choice compared to the R7 but then again, the R or R6 might work well enough and save you money. Regarding quality of photos, yes the new Canon R cameras autofocus is next level but beyond that, it's more about the lens quality vs camera body. The problem with photography forums and majority of discussions is people tend to suggest buying more expensive gear vs knowing photography. Give a pro a bottom of the line camera, an amature something like an R5, my bet is the pro will come up with better photos.
