Winning means being the best, being compatible with an almost nonexistent line up if lenses that are not as good as Canon is hardly worth thinking about. There are very few third party lenses that Canon doesn't make that is unique enough to be worth shooting, and they are all made in EF mount already. So yeah, not even close to be being a meaningful disadvantage.

One thing I like about the R5's 45mp sensor is the fact that it is *exactly* 8192 pixels wide. That means if you record 8K video, it doesn't need to do any processing to scale it. And if you record 4K video, it only needs to a simple halving. If you have 61MP, now the camera needs to scale the output from the sensor to do 8K or 4K video with a more complex algorithm, which means it'll be harder on the CPU. The CPU will have to be faster and more power efficient to compensate for this.
@Linealo

Or the camera will simply crop in for 8K and then everyone will be whiny that there's a crop in 8K.

@yuehuang Correct. 45mp is the bare minimum for 8k. 61mp is really the "sweet spot" if you're wanting e-image stabilization, cropping/digital zoom, and focus breathing comp. But I would prefer 45mp stacked over high mp any day.

I will say the second hand market cameras are not bad entry level cameras for newcomers. I get bouts of G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) when I see new camera reviews. It is completely self inflicted but then I remember I am doing OK with my old DSLR 5D4 and fleet of L lenses I have built up over time. Not a lacking set up by any means. Currently, my happiness in my current set up exceeds my bouts of GAS. Who knows, maybe I will get a R5ii second hand from one of you all? So buy them early and upgrade frequently for us slackers who will buy the previous generation gear that is still pretty incredible. :)

The one huge advantage that I see over the R5 is the double Express card slots. I always thought it was silly to have a camera that can fire away as fast as the R5 but was limited to using a SD card slot for back up. Most of the time, I don't even bother to write anything to the SD card and just pray my Express card doesn't fail.

I do the same..... plus, CF-E cards are cheaper than the fast SD cards... and have come on sale a fair bit of late...for instance, I got an Angelbird 512 for ~$160!! I paid $1000 for a 2 tb Delkin 30 months ago that has been my workhorse and it has been seen as low as $500. I do have a 128gb Lexar CF-E, which is kinda small, and wanted another larger card.

Sadly, I'm struggling, as a landscaper competing in the international salons, and printing to exhibition size, to find a good reason the upgrade from a 5D Mk4. The only thing it is missing is a tilting screen, which I want very rarely, and when I do it is a short job to hook up the phone on a hot shoe bracket. (And no I don't do video - couldn't care less. ) I just asked myself a very simple question - standing in some location, would I, if I had a different camera, (mirrorless etc etc) take a different picture. And the answer is no, I wouldn't.

My hope is that when it comes out the price of the original R5 drops to a reasonable level. I have the 5 dsr and struggle hand held blur. I think the R5 would help. I'll add that I've set my custom C2 for situations where I want the most out of the camera, with low ISO, f stop controlling for depth etc - basically landscape and run and gun - 90 perc of the time. I've set C1 to freeze action - high shutter speed, set aperture and auto ISO - seems to help even run and gun when windy or I'm not steady. Plenty of options with this camera (computer). Any suggestions ? Even if I don't get the full 50 mp that's ok.

If it comes in at a higher price it likely won't drop until its time to cut the stock. If it comes in at the same price it will probably see a price drop the way the R6 has with the mkII coming in at the same price. It likely will still be well over 3000, probably 200-300 USD off, with an additional 100 at peak sale times. Cameras at that level tend to stay around for a while even after being made obsolete. They still sold the 6DmkI I think as far as 2 years after the launch of the mkII. Then suddenly, fire sale. Lot of things could happen. If you have no hurry to get an R5, you can wait. Likely a lot of used ones will come up too.

The 5DSr was a super camera for me, always producing sharp shots. It’s tracking was great too. It was just too slow. I never had a single issue with blur shooting hand held. Except for rolling shutter on the ehutter, the r5 is better in every way, however, so if you don’t need 20 fps, the r5 is a fantastic upgrade.

same for me. Have 5DSR last 4 years, but fight with many blurred images. Mostly all is fine, when use tripod. But for some daily shooting its kinda overkill. Its really much more for static things so even i mostly take real estate or 360 tours, when shooting wedding or sport report, i am little nervous and think about another body (5DIV or 7D2).

I was a working professional when the switch to digital took place. The cameras were wildly expensive. Over $5000.00 at a time when you could buy a new Nikon film camera for just over $1,000. But, at that time my studio’s bill was over $2,000.00 per month for film and processing. Today an amateur is saving a large amount of money by shooting a digital camera, even a camera that cost a couple of thousand dollars, compared to what I spent to develop my craft. Even so, we didn’t make the change to digital to save money. Until the quality of digital was better than film, I couldn’t sell it to my clients. Better quality, and faster turnaround time, is what started the change to digital.

I know the focus of this video was the R5 Mark II, I was actually most elated to hear a tiny bit about the possible R5S! Canon has sat on these 75, 120, and 250MP sensors *for years* now that it is about time we start seeing them introduced into cameras! We finally have the bandwidth in storage media and possibly even RAM in the cameras to make those sensors usable at least within "studio" cameras!

On one hand, MOAR PIXELZ!!! On the other, I am editing some files from a 100mp GFX right now and they are just crushing my aging iMac far more than my own R5. Still, Canon tends to be pretty conservative in their file sizes. The files from my 24mp APS-C Fuji X-E3 were about 30% larger than my 30mp EOS R-granted they were very nice with lots of dynamic range. But I hear you, I too have been waiting for the S model!

the R5 already does 4k120. Yes I know it's not downsampled but subsampled (line-skipped) but it would be unfair to claim otherwise ;-) I'd upgrade immediately if it had a stacked (or global shutter) sensor and lower dark-current (sensor temperature) for long-exposure (astro). In-camera focus stacking, RAW video in a more sensible format and higher 2nd base ISO for lower video noise would be welcome additions. What I would like to see is build in Wifi that can just dump the files to my NAS right away and allows me to leave my phone in the local wifi instead of having to disconnect to a point to point Wifi with the cam only. Also, a smart downsampling RAW format for images should be brought back (better than mRAW and sRAW were), the processor is powerful enough to do this properly, no artifacts. I know I would use it a lot. Cropping is obviously not the same thing. Upgrading will probably never be cheaper again since the used-prices of the R5-mk1 will likely plummet right away, so I'll keep my eyes open.

Lower dark current never heard of it before can you explain it ?
@andreasbrand3191
@andreasbrand3191 Жыл бұрын
@@jojjes3494 simply put: even if no light strikes the sensor, 'pixel values' slowly increase. causes are temperature (the higher, the higher the dark current). With Canon's IBIS introduction their CMOS sensors are no longer connected to the rest of the system so they can't conduct their electrically generated heat away so well. The R5's sensor get's much warmer than my 5DmkIII for instance. Other reasons are defects in the chip and so on. Nikon (sony sensors) shows much less of this, not sure why, haven't dismantled any of theirs. Professional/scientific cameras for long time exposure have actively cooled chips to reduce this, quite commonly to -10°C or lower, I have some that go lower than -100°C, but those are for scientific applications obviously, cost 10x more than an R5 easily - so that's obviously no good comparison.

So the R5 already shoots 4K@120fps but it's a setting you have to turn on ("High Frame Rate" > Enable) in the video settings and it doesn't record audio. Are you saying that 120fps will be a default frame rate in the normal video setting (under "Movie rec. size") and record audio like normal? I can see where that would make more sense and be convenient so all of your frame rate options are under one setting instead of having a separate setting to enable "High Frame Rate".

Nice summary of the changes likely to be incorporated in to the Mk 2. The Mk 2 looks like a rationale upgrade that makes the Mk 2 an attractive and competitive player against other cameras of this level. That said, I doubt I will upgrade from the current R5 as the R5 is really a beast of a camera. If Canon expects buyers to stay with Canon, they need to continue to deliver firmware upgrades to the R5 that are feasible with its architecture. Holding back firmware upgrades to prior bodies is not a good way to build loyalty and retain long term buyers. If I didn't own an R5 today I would entertain the upgraded body. I initially purchased an R6 and returned it for the R5 as I enjoy bird photography. The higher resolution did allow for deeper cropping of images.

Today I am using two R5 bodies and overall I am super happy. Just wish for the two improvements. The digital TC will be nice if the additional pixel will be achieved without a compromise on the dynamic range. The value for me would be that I could sell my 100-500 and only keep my 70-200. I am not primarily in wildlife photography - hence the percentage of images on the longer end is low.

As you point out, many people prefer the smaller form factor and weight of a non-vertical grip body, myself included, and if these specs are correct, Canon is limiting stack-sensor electronic shutter performance to pro-bodied cameras only(R3, R’1’) for the foreseeable future. Too bad - If they had gone with a 45ish MP BSI stacked sensor the R5 MkII would have been a no-brained, and really put Sony and Nikon under the bar. And honestly, what amateur needs 61MP on a regular basis?? I can’t see paying $4k+ for a camera with unusable rolling shutter.

I loved the 5dsr. Although it had some issues, I had lot of great moments with it. I still sell pictures taken with that camera. Not so much with the sony a7r IV which was my next camera. I did not quite like the results colorwise with the sony, although some of the prime lenses they got are great. So I traded in my two a7r IVs, my 50 1.2 gm, my 135 1.8 Gm, my 24 1.4 gm and my sony 16-35 2.8 gm...into the Canon R5. And it feels like home. The pictures I get is more rewarding and pleasing to watch. Will I get the R5 second version? Yes :)

Those upgrades to the R5ii are actually significantly bigger... numbers wise. I agree practically it may not be a significant difference in photograpy, except in some unique situations. But the video numbers are a very good practical upgrade, especially if you are wanting to do some slowmo at 4k. Canon is looking very good these days! I'm liking my RP and at some point will upgrade to the R5ii. I think if you have the R5 for most photography and even video it's probably not important to upgrade.

There isn't really any scenario where you get good enough air condition, glass and shutter speed to see a real difference between 45 and 61, as these are already such high resolution. Moreover, the original R6 had a very strong AA filter, which made the resolution upgrade feel much more important.

You talk a lot about cameras, but what about lenses? The Canon wide angle (landscape) lenses have deeply disappointed me: the RF 15-35 f/2.8 has blurred areas, the 16mm f/2.8 prime is a disaster. The RF 24-105 f/4 is low quality except perhaps for video. The only really good wide angle lens I could find in the Canon RF portfolio was the RF 35 f/1.8, and that's more like a standard lens and not a wide angle. In the RF telephoto realm Canon is again behind the competitors. You got some really cheap 600 and 800mm f/11 lenses. Sony and Nikon has better glass and they allow third party manufacturers. What Canon does well is the ergonomics and the focusing system, but image quality wise I had to dump Canon for landscape/cityscape photography. It just doesn't deliver. What does a higher resolution body do if the lenses can't deliver? Try out a Nikon Z 14-24 f/2.8 or a Z 24-120 f/4 on a Nikon Z7 (II) and you see the difference.

First, as always, thank you for the video. I’m using a Canon R5 and Sony Alpha 1 and had thought about adding a A7RV. Seeing this I’m thinking at $4500 it’s just better to look for a lightly use A1 since they are now dipping below $4900. One reason I’m thinking of this is that carrying a EOS R5 with a battery grip and a RF 50/1.2L, 85/1.2L, and 24-70/2.8L feels like a boat anchor compared to the A1 with battery grip and FE 50/1.2 GM, 85/1.4 GM, and 24-70/2.8 GM II. Of course larger CFexpress Type A cards may impact this decision as the major negative of the Sony system. Now want to see what the future Z8 has to offer.

If it had a stacked sensor it would be perfect. The R3 (and I presume the R1, when it finally appears) is too large for me to bother with (amongst other minor things).
