Missed a very notable spec when talking about viewfinders/LCDs. The Z8 has blackout-free (pause-free) shooting. No blackouts and no slideshows when shooting in burst modes. IMO this was huge for me when I first saw it on the Z9 and I'm happy to see it on the Z8 as well. It's a completely new and kind of surreal experience when shooting stills.
@randyredding3629 Жыл бұрын
I’m with you Joe. A really big feature of Nikon Z8/Z9. Absolutely no blackout that I didn’t even notice shooting my D850. Results, in real time bird inflight view, which is a game changer in getting the shot. No more having the bird flying out of my shot because of the lag (unless I’m not fast enough). Also, the no lag start up that Jerod mention. I’ve gotten so many key moment shots because of this.
@brandonklemets2958 Жыл бұрын
There is a single fast frame of blackout when shooting with automatic flicker detection. The camera will take the smallest pause to sync with the flicker rate and then continue the blackout free shooting. Its negligible but confused me as to why my Z8 was doing a single black frame every burst and I had to dig through menus till it stopped.
@bfqywqd Жыл бұрын
So true. Switching to the Z9 from the D5/D6 was so much easier given the "near optical" quality of the EVF. So much is made of its lower resolution as compared to the R3 and the A1 (and others) but to me it looks very similar to an OVF.

For me the case is clear: Nikon Z8 Back when i bought my current camera, i took the Z7 in my hands and then the D850. The D850 just fits the hands really good, which i feel is a big plus for long days out shooting wildlife. So just because of size that is a plus point for the Z8 in my book. Then the flicker free viewfinder and no mechanical shutter. If you can read out the sensors that fast, why should i carry a mechanical shutter? Then i prefer to have better ergonomics. The D850 is also basically instantly ready to take pictures. And i had it happen multiple times that i thought i'm gonna walk here or there early in the morning and left the camera shut off to save battery but then see e.g. a roe deer or a fox somewhere i didn't expect it. So I only got the shot because the camera was ready instantly. And then, in the situation now as one might have expected: i have Nikon lenses now. If I change the system I need to change the lenses aswell.

As one who shoots a fair amount in very dark light, including stars at night, Sony has a feature the others do not, called “Bright Display.” It accumulates light from the sensor to “see in the dark” and allows framing night scenes like the Milky Way and Manually focusing on stars in pitch darkness. That, and gorgeous 60 megapixel landscapes are the main reason I went with the Sony A7RV. That said, I’ve been shooting Sony for 15 years so the real choice for me was the A7RV or the A1.

I bought a R5 when they first came out and have enjoyed it since. Glass was harder to come by at that point but through the years I have amassed a decent amount of RF lenses and some adapted EF glass that just look amazing. Now vested in a lens mount my choice is simple and in fact I double down with an R7 that my 100-500 lives on making one very nice wildlife lens without the softening of teleconverters. I guess it comes down to glass as camera bodies come and go, glass tends to stay in your kit. I do remember a time when the Fro was very much a Sony fan boy and has moved over time towards Canon with time and long ago he was all Nikon. If I had to start over I am not sure what I would go for, all three make some very nice systems and can produce beautiful images. Something to consider is the health of the company. For Sony the camera division is a very small element and almost a curiosity and it could be dropped with very little thought form Sony. Nikon is late to some of the major technological shifts in industry putting them very much behind. Canon is an imaging company and as such is all in. I think I made the right decision and very much enjoy the experience that the R5 gives.
@abhishekshah11 Жыл бұрын
I disagree with Nikon being behind in tech. Surely I think the R6 mk ii could beat out the z9/Z8 due to dual pixel AF technology and AI focus, but nikon lately has produced stunning lenses for z mount and Z8 is a very ergonomic body with a stacked sensor which is very important for sports photography. Comparing telephoto lenses, Nikon's latest 180-600mm f5.6-6.3 is a far superior affordable super telephoto than RF 100-500 or even the Sony 200-600 both in terms of aperture and range. This has to be winning for Nikon

I know you have a bug up your heiny about Nikon. That said I've owned the R5 and A7RV in the last year. All I can say is the Z9 I'm currently working with is legions beyond those other 2. Not only does it beat their pants off in regards to properly set up focus methods (which so many seem to miss losing out on the ultimate performance of the Z8-Z9) but the overall image quality regarding artifact free detail and especially color! (and you KNOW this Fro from having used Nikon's before) rules. The EVF was perhaps the most surprising element I ran across. I was under the mistaken impression my former A7RV's EVF was the finest......not even close to the results off an Z8/Z9. The Sony has grain and moire which is annoying as heck let alone drops resolution on shooting. The dynamic range, ability to cope with very bright scenes on the Z9 is other worldly by comparing to those others. Build quality is also on another plane. So I'll leave it at that. And oh yeah, I'm a professional whose shot weddings, portraits, events and real estate over the last 25 years. So I"m no amateur hack saying all of this.

Might be something that doesn't make sense unless you experience it. other than that the z8 beats the others hands down. i found it interesting some of the winning points were overlooked in this review

I watched this helpful video a couple of times. May I suggest that the very first thing one should consider when buying into a system (which is exactly what we are doing) is to ask: 1.) Do I have the lenses I need already? 2.) Which company makes the best and most available lenses I need for what I want to do. The cameras have gotten so good now, that it's the lenses that one plans to use that mostly determine the camera system to use. That's my thinking, at least.
@tomhalbouty3653 Жыл бұрын
Excellent comparison. My take away is that if are already in the Canon, Sony or Nikon system, the differences between the systems are fairly immaterial. Switching systems is costly, if you have a large lens investment. In my view, new models from each manufacturer tend to jump ahead of their competitor's older models. Exercising patience tends to even things out.

I'm really surprised that the newer A7RV shoots less fps in uncompressed raw than the older A7RIII. I migrated from canon to sony because I felt like the A7RIII was the best bang for my buck and no other camera in that price range offered the porformance or all of the features I was looking for at the time of purchase. I have no regrets making the switch but Nikon is really closing the gap and catching up to sony and canon. I think the Z8 wins this comparison for now but sony has been kind of revolutionary in terms of tech and features and I can't wait to see what they bring to the table in the future. I also hope to see breakthroughs with other camera manufacturers. Competition always brings out the best in companies and who knows what new technology the other brands will create to battle back against others with. It's an exciting time to be a photographer

This is an easy one: - want a tank or the cheapest stacked sensor FF with the best handling, and the most responsive camera? the Nikon Z8 - want the most well-rounded in photo+video specs? the Canon R5 - want the best subject detection algoritms (which doesn't always mean 100% shots in focus), the best auto white balance, the most versatile screen, and find it at a good price? the Sony a7R V

I started mirrorless with Micro 4/3. Olympus EM5II. I still stuck with Sony System is because of lens choices. Yes people might argue that with such a body like A7RV, GM is the way to go as other brands with their first party lenses. The thing is Sony embrace adapted lenses for MF lenses. Canon/Nikon too with Sigma MC-11. Not perfect but it does work, kinda. Voitlanger, Zeiss, Viltrox, Samyang, Sigma, Tamron, TTArtisan and the list goes on. Just with so much more choices imo and availability of those glass in my region made me stay on. Recently snagged up a set of new Loxia at such a bargain too. Such lenses are not currently avaliable with full support like metering, etc. Magnified Zoom, etc. Sony makes MF fun imo. Though I don't really like Sony colour tbh, lots of post work is needed but the recent A7RV renders the colours beautifully imo. Still prefer Lumix though hahaha. I can't wait where L mount grows too with a S1RII.

Using a combination of Z9/Z8 for stills and video, the level of performance is just insane. Someone recently compared Nraw 12 bits grading to Arri and he was able to make them look identical while he could never achieve this with a Sony FX6... The eye AF of the Z8/Z9 fm4.0 is as close to perfection as it gets. I was shooting a model last Friday with Z8 and P1 XF+IQ4-150 and 90% of my keepers are with the Nikon. Focus is just 100% perfect every time and you end up with more actual resolution with the 45mp sensor than with the 150mp one.

I shoot Nikon Z8 for wildlife and it does a great job... No camera is perfect, and has its twirks buuut all of those cameras are freaking amazing. Nikon, Sony or Canon. They all make fantastic products no matter what you shoot. Personally I like how Nikon Z8 looks and feels, Its big and heavy that suits me, and has best colours straight out wich is very important for me. Otherwise the specs for all of those cameras, 20,30 fps, 45 mp+ Amazing, just amazing. Cheers and happy shooting :D

The Z8 would be my favourite but for 2 things: 1) Lack of redundant video recording. 2) The sheer size of it with a battery grip attached. Used R5s are significantly cheaper and overcome those 2 issues, but the LCD screen design puts me off....so hard to choose!
@truthseeker6804 Жыл бұрын
Z8 is giving alot, r5 is giving best price to performance, a7rv is giving highest resolution. If I was buying I like the double swivel screen of the a7rv and I like the canon price. As a video person not sure what I like about the z8 tho. I have to look more into it.

@Photo Bunny yah pricing also depends on location. If where I live z8 is 300 less than r5 I would still watch comparison videos based on what I do before deciding. but at 300 less I would strongly be in favor of z8 until comparison videos prove otherwise

Something that you briefly mentioned earlier but I think probably should’ve been harped on more during the video section is that Nikon can’t do redundant recording. CF Type B cards are very reliable but any pro looking at this camera should fully understand the risk they’re taking

I have owned an R5 for quite a while now and never once have I said, "man, I sure do wish I had a 61MP sensor like that Sony A7RV". The mad push for more sensor resolution is decoupled from the post processing workflow reality. Now I would kill for 1/32000ths shutter and that stacked sensor with no blackout. Sony choosing a CFExpress type A is "Memory Stick II".

I did buy both the Canon R5 and the Sony A7R5 and both are great cameras but the Sony is just less buggy and the battery life is just significantly better...however I only have a big white prime for Canon and can't afford to shell out another 12 or more thousand so I will be keeping both systems for a while. I do hope that both Sony and Canon follow Nikon and bring the stacked sensor down to this set of cameras as I would love to actually use silent shutter but never do with either of these cameras. Really compared to cameras even 4 years ago these 3 are all so amazing as they have really managed to get all the tools I have wanted for high resolution nature photography. I'm sure they will get better but really there is nothing stopping me from getting the shots I want to get anymore.

Nice comparison. I shot Canon DSLR for the past 5 years and Canons statement to hold back 3rd party glass was a deal-breaker for me. Sony has been very pro-active and got the best sensors for a long time although others are catching up. Canon R(F) is still new and pricey while Sony E-mount (lenses) are available for some time now, 2nd hand available for reduced prices. I recently was able to buy a Sony A7R4 which also has the 61 megapixel sensor the successor has. I don't do video or action much so this is a perfect choice for me, paired with a Tamron 28-200 f/2.8-5.6 resulting in pin-sharp 61 megapixel photo's I hope to get the 16mm f/1.8 Viltrox this week to complement that.

"Which would you buy today"? As you well demonstrated, all are very capable cameras, with specific features that are stronger than the others. That said, the real answer should be " the same as your glass"! All photographers should be getting good glass before they are shopping for a camera in this class (unless you have a KZbin channel where people give you all of the brands, and you can switch anytime!), so by now, the decision is already made for you. I happen to be a Nikon shooter, because I have Nikon glass. All things being equal, I might've switched to Canon before the Z9 came out, but things aren't equal: I have Nikon glass. Nikon has redeemed itself with the Z9 and Z8; maybe not as fast focus as the others, but certainly usable for wildlife shooting/birds in flight, which is my main target. And, Sony was never on the table for me, as their weather sealing has been suspect, and the light camera doesn't act well as a counter weight for big glass.

I've used pretty much all cameras from all brands lately. Recently I've shot with the Z9 and I was blown away by everything that camera has to offer, especially the auto-focus. Since the Z8 is pretty much identical cu Z9 in terms of auto-focus, to have it against the R5 and A7R5 and to say that the R5 and A7R5 and both tied but BETTER than the Z8 on the AF department... is freaking hilarious! I know Fro has a vendetta for Nikon but come on... this is getting disgusting. On the video front - hey the Z8 absolutely BLOWS the other 2 cameras in terms of specs, but ... wait, let's see now, come on - find something - Ohhhhh it doesn't have a digital hot-shoe, that's very unfortunate 🤣🤣

Forget Jared's bias, but Z8 blows canon and sony out of the water in terms of specs, quality, and price. So obvious the bias on the video capabilities of Z8, which none of canon and sony could muster because of their cinelines to protect hence the vaunted cripple hammer in sony and especially canon, lol. Like the Z9, the Z8 is loaded with high-end video features for capturing high-resolution content with impressive dynamic range. 12-bit internal recording is possible using Nikon’s N-RAW format as well as 10-bit ProRes 422 HQ, eliminating the need for external accessories. Nikon haters gonna be hate but Nikon is killing it.

About to make the jump from Canon 5dmIII to Sony A7RV. I shoot product photography and sometimes landscape and architecture. Checkmark to Z mount. Shortest flange, biggest opening, actually existing adapters from Sony-E to Nikon-Z, theoretically everything can be adapted on Nikon Z, wont work other way around. There might be RF to E and RF to Z, but Z cant be adapted to other and E cant be adapted to RF. (also mentioning that you can adapt EF mount to RF and F-mount to Z without also mentioning adapting Sony-A to Sony-E isnt really fair, makes it look as if Sony is missing out something. They are not). Won't choose one winner, both Sony and Nikon are great, for me its probably second hand Sony A7RIII or D850 (or both) anyway...

In fairness, the Sony "R" series bodies are not intended for general use. They are aimed at "higher resolution" situations like architecture and landscapes. The general purpose bodies are the A7iv (and maybe an A7v in the future). For more specific sports photography, I think the A9 series (A9 and A9ii) and A1 series bodies were intended for that stuff.
