It’s my long lens for bright days in the snow. Let me explain: I have different lenses with me, depending if I shoot stationary (then my 300mm f/2.8 is more preferred) or if I Snowboard myself and shoot during a run. For example tomorrow I board myself and I will only take with me the 100-400mm and the 16-35mm for my 1DX body. And a 360° cam and the DJI Mini. That’s my „light“ package 🤪. If I use this lens during a football game, then always on a Monopod. For people on a budget, I recommend the Mark I version of this lens. Yes, it’s not as great, but still a good and solid lens with the same technical specifications.

This has probably been my favourite lens ever. My main interest is wildlife and this coupled with my big prime is a fantastic set up. I also use it now to photograph both junior rugby and junior football. Your review is spot on. If you have enough light this is a brilliant lens. I used to own the 400 f5.6 L, a lens which has always been considered exceptionally sharp and when I switched to this zoom (mainly for the IS) I was concerned that I would lose sharpness. I needn't have worried as the zoom is as sharp if not sharper than the old prime. Very versatile focal length. If light is an issue I switch to the 70-200 f2.8 and sacrifice the longer reach. Once again, great review Rob.

Yes, I use the Sony equivalent of this lens with the same parameters, I also have my set of 2 primes: 85f1.8 and 135f1.8 for indoor sports. This covers all my needs, with contemporary cameras shooting high ISO is not detrimental to image quality very much. Great video, thanks

I’m aiming the same direction and I’m almost there. My final setup will be 24-105 + 100-400 for outdoor and 35/85/135 1.8 primes for indoor. Actually 2.8 zoom is a compromise of variable focal length and large aperture. As a result you are ending up with quite heavy and expensive lenses. I prefer slower zooms (but with ~4x zooming capabilities) and primes which are obviously faster.

Were you using the SIGMA 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Contemporary? What do you like about the Canon more?
@adude39411 ай бұрын
@@The_Algorithm_ I'm far from an expert, but the impression I get is that using the Canon 100-400 on either my 1DX or my 7D Mk II, it just feels that I don''t have to struggle quite as much to get settings dialed in quickly when trying to get shots in a short amount of time, like with BIF. SO, it's a lens where I can get things set and shot in maybe a little less time than it took with the Sigma. But, to be fully honest, I DID pick up the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary, and I do like how that pairs with each camera too. THAT being said, though, the Sigma 150-600 C is a lens that needs optimal lighting conditions. I've heard that the Sport model is better in lower light, but with the Contemporary, it's a great lens for a bright, sunny day; less so on cloudy, grey days or towards evening.
@The_Algorithm_11 ай бұрын
@@adude394 Thanks for the reply. I had the Sigma 150-600 C, and liked it. It was just too big to want to take it though. I sold it and bought the 100-400 from Sigma and have loved it. It was significantly cheaper and lighter than the Canon variant, and still very sharp. I've always kind of wondered what the real world improvements are with the Canon one though, outside of weather sealing. I don't use it a whole lot, but it's always great when I do use it.

Hi Rob, thanks for a great video. I can just confirm what you say. I shoot 90% of football games with this great piece of glass (sometimes I get Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8) and I have to say, the lens is great, versatile and hand-holdable (even though as you've mentioned it's bit funny to hold it in front of you for the whole game, therefore I ended up putting it on monopod anyway). The image quality compared to the price, it's weight, focusing speed and transportability make it a great addition to anyone's lens collection as long as they want to shoot daylight stuff (be it sports, wildlife, even some landscapes). I'd love to see this range in f/2.8 (sometimes I miss the extra 100mm on the Sigma), but the price would go through the roof I suppose.

Great challenge, can’t wait to see the next one. Your review of the lense was spot on. Consider this to be my second lense while working baseball - primary is the 300mm 2.8 II. Been using the 100-400mm II for many years though. Some thoughts about its viability shooting baseball instead of football. 1. The 100-400 is a great lense during the day, but getting fast action at night isn’t going to happen - at least for baseball. I’m routinely shooting at 1/4000 of a second depending on distance from the batter and pitcher. Obviously, the closer you are to the subject the faster the shutter speed. 2. As you’ve stated, the 100-400 bokeh can be a problem and benefit. When shooting batters its imperative to be using a 2.8 telephoto. Nothing worsen than seeing a fan in the background picking their nose. But for plays at 1st, 2nd, or 3rd base - having that greater depth of field comes in handy. 3. I personally don’t like the variable aperature of the 100-400mm; not a fan of auto iso; especially, if there is going to be constant lighting conditions throughout the game. Many times prefer to use the 70-200mm on a crop sensor body like the 7dii (1.6x crop) - to achieve a constant 2.8 aperture from 112-320mm. Put on a 1.4 teleconverter and we have a constant 4.0 from 156-448. 4. As far as the weight - I use a Spider Camera Holster for two bodies and a tripod for my R5/300mm setup. When the 100-400 gets a bit heavy, I can easily re-holster it for quick use.

Hey Rob! Why don't you use [Same Expo. for New Aperture] setting? In occasions that the aperture value may change, such as exchanging a lens with different maximum/minimum aperture or attaching/detaching an extender, this new function will automatically change the ISO speed or shutter speed (choose either one) to maintain the same exposure in Manual Exposure Mode. The advantage of this new feature is to prevent incorrect exposure due to lens changing or attaching extender in a hurry, so that user can shoot immediately without adjusting the exposure combinations.

I'm a pro photographer in the U.S. and I've used this lens for years; first for sports when I worked as a photojournalist then on people. I ultimately specialized in model photography, working for the model directly who wanted to update or construct their book, or an agency that wanted a model shot for a specific reason with a specific product, etc. I also use it for Gr. Senior photo shoots. The reason I do is because there are times when I want my subject in a specific location and me in another that is way too far away for me to give adequate vocal directions to the subject. This happens often, e.g., a model across a somewhat wide river and me on the other side not able to even get to the bank of the river on my side, putting me quite aways from her or him. So I have my assistant(s) with a walkie talkie and my off camera lighting or reflective gear with the model and I have a walkie talkie and can tell my assistants how to light her/him with a modified flash or with a reflector(s) and how I want the person to pose. It works great and I've gotten a ton of very good images doing this. I can second what you said about this being a tack sharp lens, and it renders color as only a Canon can. The only thing I do different from you (aside that I no longer shoot sports) is that I always (at least 99% of the time) use a monopod. This lens/camera combination is too heavy to hold onto for any length of time. I sometimes use your method of using manual, setting my shutter speed and using auto ISO, but for the most part because my subjects, normally, aren't moving--or moving very little--I can use Aperture Priority, set my ISO, and adjust it as needed because I'm not always moving my focus in and out as much as you would. I do use evaluative metering for 99% of my work with models/gr. seniors in this scenario. However, I carry a few other lens' with me, usually a 70-200 2.8 and a 24-105 L lens. The 100-400 L IS USM is a great lens, but I use it strictly for daylight shooting, it's not a fast lens by any means. I have a question for you and any other photographers reading this. I've never been in England and I notice that none of the photographers' on You Tube anyway' talk about shooting Graduating Seniors. Shooting Seniors is a big business here in the U.S. Is this not done in England? Is the school system different, and if so how? I googled it but the information I found was confusing at best. It may be a strange question, so forgive my ignorance. Thank you in advance for your response.

Hello, Rob. I know it’s a year on but this is me just seeing this video. Sorry if this is a duplication, I didn’t read all 125 comments though I scanned them. You talked about using Auto ISO to compensate for changing exposure as you zoom. You might be aware of it, or not, but there is a menu option on the 1DX (C.Fn2, the camera tab second option) called “Same expo for new aperture”. This allows you to choose how the camera will compensate for a variable aperture lens when *not* in Auto ISO in the cases of changing the lens to a different max aperture, attaching an extender, of zooming. You have three choices: ISO-this will change the ISO from whatever you’ve manually selected if necessary. It is a lot like Auto ISO except you can choose a preferred default, ISO/Tv-this is like the above in that it first tries to compensate using ISO but if it hits the set ISO range limit (high or low) it will continue by adjusting the shutter. Tv-This adjusts shutter speed and leaves ISO alone, obviously not the choice in your case. The first option is most relevant to your case and it is not very different from Auto ISO but does allow you to set an ISO preference instead of having the camera select one. Since you can use one of the custom shooting modes to register a setup that includes this, it might be a nice tweak for cases when you are shooting with a variable aperture zoom, or possibly using an extender on and off. The 1DX Mark II with that lens is a great combination. I use it with a 1.4x Extender II for birds. Thanks to the 1DX’s fantastic autofocus, even all the way out to 400mm where the loss of one stop leaves me with 𝑓/8 it can use all of the focus points. I also use the lens with a 7D Mark II but without the extender because the 7D’s autofocus isn’t happy with 𝑓/8. The 1.6x crop factor gets me a little more reach than the 1.4x Extender anyway. My main bird rig is either body on a 600mm 𝑓/4L with the 1.4x Extender. One stop puts me at 𝑓/5.6 and both cameras are happy with that. The 840mm on the 1DX is brilliant but then the 1344mm with the 7D gets me incredible reach with excellent IQ. When I need speed, it’s the 1DX, for reach the 7D. Thanks for the helpful video, it’s always great to get different perspectives.

Love this video (too) :D Thanx for the inspiration. I tried the 100-400 MK2 once on birds. Doing mostly indoor sports/event, f/2.8 is a must. The 300 mm is heavy and expensive, so a Canon EF 200mm F2L IS USM (or f/2.8) on my 7D2 would be nice and upgrade my 6D1 to 1DX? + 70-200 f/2.8 is cheaper.

I think you have to go with whatever works for your budget. Good options there though

Great video Rob. I just purchased that lens here in Oz and put it on my 6DMKII. I shoot motorsport and can’t afford the jump to the big guns yet so this was my best option. I went out and shot some track bikes on the weekend and was stoked with the results. I have the images up on FB @StrayaPhotograpy if Keen for a look at the results. Also a couple on IG @mattorrz Keep the vids coming mate, cheers 🍻

Excellent video...i am shocked you shoot professional football @1/250 of a sec. wow, if I go below 1/1000 my sharpness starts to erode,

Do you have any experience with the 100-400 on the R6? Considering the RF 70-200 F2.8 but also thinking maybe the RF 100-500 might be better for my situation OR saving some money and going with a used 100-400mm. I tend to keep my stuff for a while and I currently have an EF 24-70 F4. It would be for non professional kids sports (my little guy is just over 2 years old now) and would be for soccer, hockey and other kids sports as he becomes interested. I also need to take in to consideration that I have a spinal injury so my left arm doesn’t like to cooperate and pretty much everything causes me additional pain BUT that being said I’d like to have memories and already understand that I’m always trading life experiences for additional pain. Well this comment just took a turn and became depressing 😂. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

How do you change your ISO to Auto in Manuel mode?
@RobSambles3 жыл бұрын
You can just set it in the menu to auto, on most cameras it's the next setting down from 100

Is it possible to shoot a football game or even a basketball game with the 5D Mach IV and the 100-400mm, in artificial light, I think I know the answer but never hurts to ask your professional opinion, big hug from Madeira Island here in Portugal!!!!

Just a thought on your intro, your logo comes in with an animation but then just disappears. Try just animate it so it increases in size by 10% and then decreases until it disappears be less tarring if nerds like me are paying attention!

I own the canon 100-400 II aswell as the tamron 100-400.... IQ is the same!! AF of the canon seems to be a littlebit faster....the tamron is much lighter.....and MUCH cheaper.... outdoors for action ,macro and BIF I use my 90D....indoor at events I use mainley my 5DIII and tamron 70-200 G2 2.8 and tamron 24-70 G2 2.8

I will use my 100-400 for everything I can shoot. It is my first choice lens between say 9am to 4pm. On my 7D2 (640mm)....wow. Great lens, but at dusk until the sun comes back up, useless. Cant be used for night sports or gym sports and if you need clear sharp shots, it may be very noisy on very cloudy dark days. It can hurt my back using it for an entire game. Try a binocular chest strap support to take up some of the weight. One more disappointment you will have, is post game celebrations when parents get up close with their phones, you are out of luck in getting post game team poses.Just my 5 cents lol

Hi. Thanks for the video. I have used my new 100-400 lens for rugby and soccer and found 95% of the images are not sharp. Can you advise what the stabilising number you use please? I have a 1dxmkii and shoot manual mostly with Auto Iso at 1250th sec. I have shot in full sun and also overcast skies. When it goes to 1600 iso all frames are furry or not sharp. I am doing something wrong . I use back button focus with single point and case 4. I have used a 70-200 for 5 years and get far more sharper images with that lens than I do with this new 100-400.

Mia, you are not alone. I use the lens on my Canon 7D Mk1. I am reasonably pleased with some of my (static) bird photos but am disappointed with recent the results from our son's rugby game. I shot in M, at 1/1000, and AutoISO. I used a monopod. Single point fucus but the results are not sharp which is a disappointment. I empathise with the issues you have. Maybe it is the stabilisation setting is wrong (#1). Good luck.
