Canon announced the 5.2mm f2.8 DOUBLE fisheye 180 VR 3D lens, specificalyl for the Canon R5 (sdp.io/r5) and 8k video. It looks crazy, but it might be crazy like a fox. See, this lens is designed to create video content in the 180 VR format which can be viewed through Virtual Reality headsets like the Oculus Quest (sdp.io/quest), which we use. There's a problem, though: Almost nobody actually uses 180 VR.
Tony Northrup discusses who actually will use this lens and why the format might never gain popularity.

Stereo slide photography was a thing back in the 1950s and my dad had a 3D camera. We have several boxes of slides from family vacations. A few years ago I was able to track down a stereo slide viewer. It's cool going back to those old slides every once in a while to revisit those trips. I've never tried VR in any form. As soon as I saw this 12:36 it all made sense to me. Back when google did their cardboard 3d viewing thing you could make for yourself I got excited and tried to make one myself but learned you had to buy magnifying glasses to make it work so I tabled that idea. One thing I learned doing research was pretty much the only real content out there is the, ryhmes with corn, industry. This is for corn producers. LOL. It's worth noting that, when you talk about the 120hz refresh on a VR headset, that's how fast it's updating the image displayed on screen based on the movement and direction of your head, where if that's too slow, the fluid in your ears mismatches the signal from your eyes, and it makes you sick. The frame rate of the *content* you're viewing using that headset is something different, and all the traditional pros/cons for faster/slower framerates apply as they do in traditional non-VR mediums - where a slower 30/60hz obviously isn't a nice, but it won't make you sick.

At 12'39" I managed to freeview a stereo pair, after establishing whether to cross my eyes or set my eyes to focus on infinity: parallel viewing. A bit of a success, brief as it was. Most of my life of travel has been chronicled using the post war Stereo Realist camera created by Seton Rochwhite. I've have several and the best one optically was one of the earliest, built by the David White company in 1947. I enjoy stereo slides in my battery handviewer still. All that aside, 3D Stereo photography and cineography will come of age when we are unencumbered by headsets, or clunky eyeware and the like. In science and industry it is a major tool. There is also a book co-authored by Brian May illustrating the Apollo spaceflight era of stereos.

When I saw this lens I was amazed by how cheep it was for such an unusual lens, the second thing was a suspicion that canon had made this with a customer. I wonder if Holywood wants a 5D like small 3D camera for films. We have seen 5D's used in films like Mad Max where they need a small cheep camera to chuck on something for a shot and not care if it brakes (compared to some high end camera it's cheep). Facebook is also doing a push for more AR content so maybe it's them & google also comes to mind.

Not sure what it would cost to shoot regular cine and 180 takes. It would probably involve retakes, but maybe that's a fraction of the overall cost.

Live streaming 360 is amazing and just the fact that you have so many ways to use the same file after filming is really going to be a game changer if the quality can continue to rise with more people creating content. We just need to continue experimenting I think so many people have not really explored all its potential, I use it in almost all my projects now after starting to integrate 6 years ago and really only see my use increasing with this new release, I hope you follow this release more! This lens came to my attention two nights ago when perusing through the Oculus Quest Metaverse store where it was demonstrated by a young film maker who created a musical dance video. Immediately from the very start of the music video I was absolutely blown away as the opening scene took place within an elevator crammed with people. With my Oculus Quest 2 headset on, siting on my couch I turned my head from left to right feeling gob smacked with the never before experience that made positioned my fully immersive perspective as though I was also huddled within the elevator as I turned to see the gentleman and lady standing each by my side with one of the actors who was standing in front of my surprised me as she turned her head and looked me in the eye acknowledging my presence. My 2D Go Pro Max is about to get shelled because I am definitely purchasing this complete game changer of a lens and the Canon R5 that is the only camera that is able to capture footage that if it is a short or full feature film, the viewer will be for the first time in cinematic history not given one perspective that the camera operator shoots from, this will enable viewers to move within the scene and watch the film from any perspective they choose. As far as wether or not there is a demand or not, this is a true opportunity to be one of the first pioneers in creating our own independent platforms within the Metaverse because you can, as I have done and will be doing again, create your own Occulus Quest Metaverse space as a developer for free. Also, the 3D TV”s that fizzled out is no comparison to the current commercial applications of using such a cutting edge vr camera technology within the Metaverse BECAUSE we now have the block chain Cryptocurrency that is part of the new virtual reality commerce where uploads will be available to be offered as NFT”s that motivate individuals to own a share of the film or debut artist film. Imagine if we had the opportunity to own a piece of Michael Jackson’s epic Thriller video that has gone done in history as the most successful music video of all time. Now we can.

I think the most interesting VR camera is the insta360 one R. Because it is so modular, it can do 180 3D vr, 360 VR, and can also be rebuilt to just work like a gopro type action camera. That and it also has a rig to mount it to DJI drones which the potential for filmmaking is incredible. But i agree that both the capability to consume and shoot content needs to be readily and cheaply available for a technology to catch on.

I assume the way most content created in 180º VR would allow for head movement as you'd only be viewing a smaller "crop" of the scene (hence the need for 8K or higher) and you have a full 180º to look around in. Of course, it might be weird to look around in 120Hz while the motion of the content is only 30 or 60 fps... In any case, it's a cool lens. I'm sure as the years go by Canon will have RF mount cameras that can shoot 8K in 120fps that would make VR content much more natural.

I love the idea of VR, I love my Valve Index headset and the games I play on it. The immersion and just next level to the gaming experience is a show for where the industry of interactive content is going. That said, the whole VR/3D concept is one that has been struggling to get into motion. With gaming it took until the Quest (arguably the Quest 2) to make it not just affordable for the general consumer, but also have a great enough market to justify more development of games with VR. So over the next few years I can foresee the VR gaming industry continuing to grow as more high end and affordable options are developed and games are developed for people to play. But that leads to the issue with VR video. The issues of VR video are for the most part listed in this video, and I agree with all of them. Creating professional content for VR is a challenge, even professional 3D is questionable due to the issue of demand. But it gets into the circle issue of why make hardware for something that has no content, and why make content for something that has no hardware? I do believe that 3D phone screens will probably be the biggest push to validation of this type of production, but I think in the meantime independent creators should continue to make use of the resources we have and develop content for it regardless. Unless there is something to consume with new hardware, not many people will buy it. Here is where I think we're already in a good situation and should move forward. Travel Vlogs. Unlike films where you need to be focusing on a specific framing and have everything carefully laid out and presented by the creators, with travel vlogs and other similar types of content, being able to look around is a benefit! There are things constantly going on when a creator is walking around, so being able to look around not just allows you to experience more, but also gives you replayability as you can see the video from at least 4 key perspectives. In terms of just pure 3D content, there are some ideas that I would like to see if are possible, but will be trial and error for sure. A major thought I have had is an answer to the issue of the video being unmoving in 3D. If you move your head or tilt it in any way, the video will stay static in the way it was filmed since it isn't 3D. So What if you are wearing a VR headset and it puts you in a cinema or other type of room environment where you are looking at a screen, and each eye will see the screen in the room, but only show the corresponding image (left eye gets left image, right eye gets right image). I'm not sure how the brain would process that, but if it processes it as intended to create the 3D effect w/o issues, then you can look around, tilt your head, and nothing will be jarring since you're then looking around in a virtual space.

Maybe a lens like this might be nice for virtual production. It does absolutely need a longer focal length for that though. My reason is that you can create a good depth map from the content which could be used for geometrically correcting lights on your actor in post production. when you do VR, you are splitting the resolution. with an 8K sensor, that means you get a 4K VR video. people were "misled" when they bought something that had 2560x1440 resolution and wondered why the video was so soft, only to learn that each eye got 1280x1440. And the true view is more like 1280x1280 in each eye for this example. Those "5.2K" cameras don't really advertise that videos would be half that resolution.

Just like 3D, great concept but a little ahead of the consumer tech. This lens is amazing and seriously the future of VR moving forward. We just need cameras that can support AT LEAST 6k 60fps with this lens but 8k 60fps is really the ideal spot moving forward. I personally own and use an Evo, pair of gopro cameras and a K2 Pro and if the right camera existed for this lens right now, I would dump all my cameras for a setup like this in a heartbeat. Lets hope the momentum continues and this release gives us VR aficionados enough wind under our market to see more innovation come out soon.

I was asked a long time ago if 3D and VR are tha future. My response was only if it fits the content. For example if you have an idea you can deviled that idea in a picture, video, song, book, website, video game, with features that maybe suitable for it such as surround sound, film, 3D, VR, panorama imaging, etc. First find out what way you want to express your idea and then pick what media and format best suits that content.

very interesting reflection on the VR 180 limitations. To paraphrase a well known politician, VR 180 has been, is, and will be a feature of the future.

Yeah I 100% agree with Tony here, VR360 sucks. I am surprised there aren't many high quality VR180 options available (it's essentially the Z Cam K1 Pro, K2 Pro, and $20k FM Duo VR180). If this lens is pretty sharp, and doesn't suffer from too much chromatic aberrations, it could be a real winner when paired with a future release Canon 8K 60fps camera

I like my 2011 panasonic 180vr lens ... the lenses are too close together, but that can be an advantage with macro-ish scenes. works great with video, but F5.6(?) requires a lot of light!

Can I think of taking the file from R5 and inserting it directly into the Oculus Quest 2? Without any PC processing or post-production work? Canon saves the two points of view in the 8k frame exactly where and how the Oculus wants them to reproduce the original VR 180 3D scene? in this case I believe there is a future.

Interesting as I had a 3D smartphone around 8 years ago. You could take photos and videos in 3D and then view them on the phone and they would be 3D. That technology has already been invented, but never took off. I still have that phone somewhere. I think people were just not interested in it. Maybe now it will slowly take off, not sure.

8K 60fps or better with a good system / setup is where it's really at for VR. The Z Cam K2 Pro delivers very impressive 5K footage, much better than most of the other 6K and 7K footage I have seen

I do think the Oculus Rift S is much more comfortable than the quest 2. Although 3rd party headstraps (or 1st party), like the quest 2 elite battery head-strap help the comfort a bit....hopefully the upcoming quest2+ rumoured to launch later this month can help alleviate some of those issues. Edit: although I think interactive animated stories will be far more popular in vr (due to how you can lean and look around)

Call it xR. x is a variable that allows for all the variants. 2D/3D ; still/video ; "framed"/180/360(or any other FOV) ; live/pre-recorded; interactive/linear ; 3Dof/6DoF ("volumetric video") ; purely-virtual (VR)/virtual+physical (AR & MR). They are all eXtended Reality content, in some ways alike, but each with its own special features.

Re Glasses. You're talking about ACTIVE 3D but there were also PASSIVE 3D TVs at the same time (mine is from 2013). Passive doesn't use powered glasses (it uses the same kind you get at 3D movies), and looks better.

Previewing 3D effects. It is not hard to train yourself to "freeview" or "parralel view" without special viewers. You sort of relax your eyes as if you're falling asleep at your computer. The two images will flow and snap together and you will see it in 3D. Helps if the image is smaller. You can also buy special glasses that work like an old timey stereoscope, except you wear them like glasses. It's easier with smaller images, and on phones and tablets.

Side note: I'm surprised the Vuze XR was mentioned given the company has gone out of business. The combined costs of the camera and the lens put this out of reach of people who were purchasing the Vuze.
@qporit

The Vuze cameras helped grow the VR video creator community. They still are the currently best pro-sumer VR cameras (while they last at B&H). They were working on the next generation camera when they ran out of money. There are many pain points to watching VR videos currently, but hardware and software are developing steadily. It is really sad that they did not have enough resources to last. At some critical point, there will be a new "Kodak" that will time the entry of a new xR camera perfectly with the necessary improvements in xR video processing and xR video viewing capabilities to become a behemoth. (Confidential: We are working on improved display software we hope to reveal soon, that we hope will help.)

I think it's an interesting concept and unlike the gears you mentioned that failed, those are lenses.. They'll still be usable in 5 or 10 years when we'll have 8k/120p available and that lens will still be here and working perfectly, unlike those all in one devices. So while this is probably just aimed at porn industry to be honest for now, I think it's a good move from Canon, like you said, 100% of the pie is better than a chunk of a shrinking pie. And who knows we might actually get some good content coming out with that kit.. The manual focus though might limit things quite a bit.. Either everything on tripod or need of a real film crew to handle everything..

I hope 3D comes Back, I have been shooting 3D for 15 years at least before the last wave came out. I created an action in Photoshop to align 2 pictures. I would Take a Picture then move the camera and shoot another. Then I bought a 3D fuji camera with 2 lenses and it shoots MPO 3D files and Video. and I have a Gadmei 8 inch Tablet that can View 3D without Glasses on. Cant wait to see the New 3D wave.

I've owned several VR headsets (the original Vive, the original Rift, as well as the Quest 1) and I am still pretty conflicted about the future of VR. On one hand, when its well done, VR is a breathtaking experience and I really love going in and playing Robo Recall or watching high quality VR videos-- there's nothing like it, period. 3D TVs are nothing like true VR. On the other hand, there are several drawbacks (the hassle of actually strapping the thing on, making space to actually move around, isolating yourself from your surroundings, not being able to really share your experience with friends and family sitting next to you, etc.) that quickly begin to outweigh the novelty of the VR experience. Combined with a general lack of content, ultimately all of my headsets ended up just collecting dust. That said, Facebook is clearly putting all of its might behind VR with the Metaverse, so we'll see...

Smart phones will lead the way toward 3D and maybe even bring back 3d displays. There is enough separation to place 2 cameras far enough apart to mimic human vision.. Then display that onto a 3D capable display and it will give the video/image into that mythical 3D pop photographers are always looking for. The 3D display will also be using eye tracking to create foveated rendering to even push the realism further.
