Thank you so much Hugh! I love the thoroughness of your videos! One major question I have, that was somewhat unclear from the video - Question: Does the R5 + dual fisheye have automatic face-detection focus tracking, while filming in video? At one point, it sounds like you share that focus is manual during video shooting. This is an important thing for me to understand....Thank you so much my metaverse soulbrother!

Man your guides are so awesome, thank you for everything you do for the VR world! I'm looking to shoot high quality 180VR videos outdoor, almost like a run-and-gun (quick turnaround), but mostly shot standstill, probably on a monopod. Do you think R5 would suit my need (does IBIS even matter?) or maybe the insta360 GO2 is the more logical choice? I'd love to shoot 8k60p on the R5C but the post production looks way too complicated for my need 😂

Hugh - love your work!! When leveling the camera, do you always try to be vertically level? Horizontal - always. But there are times when the scene calls for some camera tilt. Is tilt always bad in 180 3D?
@hughhou
@hughhou 10 ай бұрын
So personally I keel BOTH vertical and horizonal level and never tilt. As viewers can tilt themselves in VR headset - which is one of the biggest different from 2D vs VR filmmaking - give viewers the max control of their viewpoint instead of directing them. BUT, by saying that, I recently work with a VERY FAMOUS DP in a hollywood level project. He disagree with what I said and tilt the camera - even tilt the camera 180 degree to look down directly! You will see the works coming out very soon and how it that make the viewers "feel" in the storytelling. So at the end of day, it is all based on your story. I won't say there is a rule your can't do that. And I encourage everyone to break it, challenge me and challenge what Meta tell you NOT to do. Technically, if you tilt your camera, you won't be able to rely on EOS VR Utility to stitch your file or enable leveling in post. So you will need to use Resolve 18 or Mistika VR to stitch - which is also detailed the workflow on this channel. I hope this help you.

What an exceptional tutorial, thanks this saves so much time. Have you ever ran into the issue where your ambisonic mic picks up the vibration of the fan when attached to its hotshoe or even the tripod itself? It is faint enough to get it out in post, but ideally it would not be there at all. Testing a setup with the cam on a tripod with fan spinning and the mic on a seperate tripod fixed it, but I am hoping that there may be a solution where you can keep the mic on the same tripod somehow. I am asking since you seem to put your mic on the same sliding plate and I never hear any vibration picked up in your videos.
@hughhou
@hughhou 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it does! I will attach it on the rail or attach it lower on the tripod.
@Maebbie
@Maebbie 2 жыл бұрын
@@hughhou both will still pick up the microvibrations the fan makes. However I ended up getting a small screw on shock absorber for the mic which alleviated that problem. Now you can only faintly hear the fan but not its vibrations so no problem when you are outside. It works really nicely.

@@hughhou Same question. I'm about sold on the R5. It sounds like it seems to work better for the 180 Lens. It seems like many complaints are coming about the R5C and how Canon should have just left it alone as an R5 with the ability to just not overheat. They couldn't just leave it. For someone who really wants to take photos, and that's it, I can save thousands. With the skills I have right now learning video is to expensive and 180/360 files are juggernauts, not to mention the computer hardware I would have to invest in to use the R5C to the fullest. I'm willing to wait a bit before I get into the world of video.

Thank you Hugh, There is still no real usable post production process to work with this RAW footage for VR though. The Davinci process from your previous video takes AGES to render footage because those plugins are extremely outdated, even on the top end spec machine. If you want to render a 2 minute video, sure two hours rendering is ok but most of us want to render 30-60 minute videos. There is still no good solution and the stupid mp4 codecs on the camera dont go up to 60p. This camera was NOT ready for VR and canon really dropped the ball on this, hopefully they can get their act together and at least update the VR utility or give us a camera firmware updated with more codec options.
@hughhou
@hughhou 2 жыл бұрын
Strange - with my machine is rendering okay. I guess Resolve is GPU memory hungry - for Mac and PC with lower GPU memory is struggle. I will research into the next solution. Stay tuned. New POST tutorial is coming.
@ericalvarez9345
@ericalvarez9345 2 жыл бұрын
@@hughhou Thanks! From what I could see in your Davinci workflow video, towards the end of the video where we can see your two queues, one stopped and one completed, your completed render time took roughly about 16 times longer than the footage playtime to render using your machine. Meaning, even if I use your machine and want to render a 45 minute video it would take about 720 minutes or about 12 hours to render. That is way too long and its even longer if we use a machine less powerful than yours.
@hughhou
@hughhou 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed - that is actually in my lower spec PC for screen capture. My M1Max Macbook Pro is faster but you are absolutely right. Let me talk to Andrew to see if he can increase the render a bit. Another solution will be just using ProRes - so render Canon RAW LT into ProRes before running this workflow - nothing is changes. Resolve native ProRes on Mac is a lot faster - like a lot. So use the Canon RAW developer to just develop with LUT on the RAW LT file and then just work of ProRes. I will have other none Resolve solution coming soon on this channel. I do have lots of filming job while working free on my channel trying to help, so it is a bit slow on my end but I promise a better workflow is coming when I get to post - I film so many stuffs for client and myself so I will def need a better solution if not I will run into bottle neck myself as well.

Welcome! I personally will suggest R5C - it is not much more expensive but give you 60fps if you need it

On Canon's site, the Canon RF 5.2mm F2.8L DUAL FISHEYE Lens says that it's not compatible with the EOS R5C, although it does show as compatible with the EOS R5.

Great video Hugh. I'm having an issue though with R5C and the adobe VR plugin. It keeps saying "HEVC Codec has not been activated" - Do you know where to activate it? I've tried activating it from the Canon DPP App - From Help > Activate HEVC Codec - but then I get another error saying "HEVC Codec Activation does not apply to this file" - even though it's a HEVC file I'm selecting. I'm using Windows and Premiere Pro 22.40 (build 57) - much appreciated id you can help with this. I wonder if anyone else is having this issue?

Can anyone comment on the quality of video resolution with the r5c and dual fisheye lens? I just want to know if the resolution quality has at least reached the video quality of 720p viewed on an iphone screen without a headset. Unfortunately all vr 180 video quality i've seen has been too poor of quality to get excited about and just want to know if it's worth spending thousands for this setup.

@@hughhou Man is there any footage you don't have? haha incredible. Seriously though I don't have a headset anymore that's why i was hoping for an answer. I edited my question cuz i realized it was confusing lol. Is the resolution as good as the DUO by fm360's video on the vr180 oculus pro? For me that was the best vr resolution video i had ever seen, just way too expensive. Here's a peek. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5DPg6R-bc-ni9E

Thanks Hugh! Super appreciate all the hard work to produce these videos -- you should make ppal donate link! You've saved me so much time & effort already. +1 re: what @Vanilla says -- took my 24 core 2019 Mac Pro almost 2 hrs to render 2 min of video using Resolve/KartaVR. Not an issue for me now because just getting my feet wet w/ VR, but unusable otherwise. Encoding to H.264 is faster (but still slow), but bottom half of video is noise when viewed in Oculus -- I am prob rendering to unsupported resolution or bitrate. How does Mistika VR perf compare? I tried trial version, but very buggy and expensive.

KZbin does not enable donate feature on my channel for some reason lol. Yes Mistika version of the tutorial is coming next but still need more testing and figure thing out on my end as well to make it easier for others. It is buggy.
