Being a Norwegian EV owner myself, with over 5 years with the same car. I must say that I'm really disappointed that this company isn't considering the Norwegian market. We can't get enough EV's over here, this buissness model and car would have a better chance to succeed in Norway. However, being a subscription only deal seems very wishfull and daring. I would strongly reccomend including ownership also for those who want to customize their vehicle or personalize the interior space. The best bet would be to offer subscription, leasing and ownership, to ensure a deal for every preference.

To be honest, I don't see this as a car so much as a concept - as in the subscription concept. There's nothing radical about the car really. It's a tech company who think they can shake thinks up and be the next uber - but if uber do self driving cars that you can request on demand - why would you subscribe?

I bought shares, I like this speculative concept of subscription. Regardless I feel they will do well targeting businesses, like food trucks, delivery services, small businesses. The customization aspect is incredible with the skateboard design.

Interesting concept, but it is basically a self-drive taxi. That's ok if you have a regular timetable for journeys, but not if you are a random - let's go there - now! type. Maybe cars are treated differently in the States, but over here in the U.K. it is also a mobile junk-store, where we keep our spare coat, our paper maps, tyre pump, de-icer spray-can, and all kinds of odds and ends that we almost never use, but just might need. With this concept, you would have to remove it all at the end of every journey, find somewhere to store it, and remember to put it all back in again for the next journey - or rely on the breakdown service for the smallest of faults that can be rectified in minutes. - - And that curved rear seat! I can't see that being permitted in the UK - how do the sideways riders strap in? Regarding the vid - a lot of time was wasted showing the crowds walking past - from a low angle - so all you could really see was people's buttocks.

Buses have flat noses. Vehicle design is still based around the idea of a 200kg lump of metal sat just ahead of the driver. I like that they're pushing design forward. Not every car has to be for the freeway or a road trip. I'm hoping a "slow" car culture develops around city and residential speed limits that allows for these designs.

Love that they are bringing back a van-ish no hood designed BEV (like the I-MEIV) that maximizes its interior space. To bad I have major doubts about everything else they are doing. For example, isn't a main selling point with subscriptions, the ability to trade up and between other models (that they don't have available)? And most car makers with many models have not succeed, using a subscription model. So good luck Canoo and I hope you prove me wrong.

I'm not sure I get all of the hate in the comments. Most of the "but what is it" questions were pretty clearly covered. It's a hyper-niche market rental vehicle designed for Southern California market. You rent it until you are tired of it and then you pass it to someone else. If you dont use it on weekends, someone else can use it then. Personally, I think it's a kind of naff plan, but what the plan is is pretty simple to understand. Basically, it tries to solve the "problem" of people who want to use Car-2-Go but complain that there's never one right outside their house. Which I don't think is really a real problem. I think this would be far more interesting and solve more problems as a rental service vehicle than as something you take home. I do actually dig the design tho, and as an autonomous taxi it would be awesome.

Hoping this is the beginning of the end of the SUVs - This architecture has always been what future cars should be like, as proven by for example the Renault Espace in 1984. Maximum interior space in the most compact shell must be the way forward. I can not see this as futuristic in any way - this is what I´ve been waiting for since the 80s.

The concept is good, but I really don't see people sitting sideways without sit belts unless they are ok with being smashed to bits in case of a crash. Aslo, the Espace had seats you could position to face each others except nobody ever did: people don't like to be driven backward, so after trying the face to face placement, everyone reverted to 3 rows of forward facing seats!

@pawpawbandit3871
@pawpawbandit3871 3 жыл бұрын
Dave... one, when looking from the side, the driver is really not in the front of the vehicle like in vw vanagon... there is a lot of space in front of them. Second, there isn't an engine or a bunch of parts in between the driver and the car body that could potentially be pushed into the driver...there's just that frame . I guess the biggest issue is probably the ergonomics..it does seem like a seatbelt would need to be worn 100% of the time (because it looks like the main issue would be the potential for you to go over the minimalist dashboard during a front impact if you aren't in a seatbelt...but I suppose airbags will help with that as well).

"we'll partner with one of the winners for autonomy" So let me get this right: you want to build and own a massive load of depreciating assets on your balance sheet. You'll outsource production, but you have to invest in an the r&d. So you're a rental company with massive r&d expenses and you don't plan to own the real value add of the autonomous driving. Ok, I guess. Maybe this business model is a bridge to a robotaxi fleet. But then why not just buy a bunch of model 3s or cybertrucks and robotaxi them out? I appreciate the new thinking, but it doesn't really make sense to me. Why be on the hook for a monthly membership when you can just call a robotaxi?

Will, they have sense changed the business model around to sell the three vehicles they have interest in in 2022-23; makes sense to me... lowering the focus on the subscription model. Partnering with Nvidea makes a ton of sense and is what most people are doing... it would probably be a fools errand to try to compete with Tesla, Nvidea, and maybe Apple for example on Autonomous driving...it would definitely be impossible for Canoo to do that unless someone handed them 100Billion in cash.. so that's smart. People are upset about the changes in personnel and business model - but it makes sense to me and I think it's about "getting real" and selling cars and having a viable business model for sure.

I'm betting it will fall under some kind of restricted speed laws. The front end is also pretty far from the driver (much further than an old VW bus, which would never meet modern crash requirements). I think the boxy appearance masks some of the space. My biggest issue(s) with this company are two things. 1) How are they manufacturing exactly!? Who is this world class manufacturer? Are they building a factory or a production line just for the Canoo? 2) They are essentially trying to change the way people think and feel about owning\sharing a vehicle. While I'm all for that, I don't think America is the place to do that. California isn't a bad place to get started, but most Americans would probably agree that California is an entirely different attitude\mentality than the rest of America. Personally I would have much rather seen them start this off in really green parts of Europe or China. I think the Canoo would be an absolute hit in major Chinese cities like Shenzhen, Beijing (if lucky enough) and Shanghai because not only is ride sharing so extremely prevalent there, but so is business and upper class personal use van(ish) class vehicles of this size.

Good question. IMHO tech that is utilised most should get batteries first - buses, delivery vans, lorries, trucks, excavators, garbage collectors, etc. They are the biggest benefactors from reduced maintenance windows, lower TCO, higher reliability, etc. People around them are happier with less noise and lower poison emissions (until we solve tyres). Putting batteries into cars that aren't used 95% of time is such a waste... Unsure about electric motorhomes - in the rental ones lifetime seem to be much shorter than batteries so perhaps it doesn't make much sense. For the luxurious ones any idea of potential inconvenience is probably tough sell.

Looking at YOU Adobe Creative software and YOU that subscription juicing machine Juicero and YOU all those monthly subscription meal kits, shaving kits, etc...... but cars, maybe that's different. So long as it works out drastically, massively and hugely cheaper than owning a car - including a 2nd hand banger like mine always have been - then I'm potentially interested.

I'm not at all opposed to not owning a car, and instead obtaining transportation as a service. It has a very appeaking future when compared with autonomous driving. At the same time though, I'm afraid I'll have to remain skeptical. Across the consumer markets, subscription models have, in 99 out of 100 cases, served mainly to increase revenue for the businesses, not to reduce prices for consumers. It is marketed as "more affordable" since steady rates are more easily digestible than huge up-front payments, and conveniently obfuscate the total cost. But if you end up paying 20% more over the same timespan of ownership than if you had just bought and maintained the thing yourself - or if you paid the same but can't sell the thing for its residual value since you don't own it - then it turns out that it was just another marketing lie after all. And that's the sad truth for a large number of subscription models today.
@Wookey.
@Wookey. 4 жыл бұрын
Annoying isn't it? Ownership is always cheaper whenever I do the sums. And it really shouldn't be because the utilisation rate is so tiny. Possibly if we had to pay a fair price for emissions the numbers would look better.

I understand the concept of the most advanced mobile device is the one in your hand, but I think it's a flaw that they don't have a screen. Sooner or later the customers are going to complain. The best way is when you plug in or cradle your phone, a bigger screen that's optimized for driving will be sync with it like apple car play.

The sub would have to be 100 or 2 a month. Cheaper than a regular car payment. It makes sense to me cuz you can leave the car somewhere and grab another when you are ready to leave. Even better is people renting them and drive them for uber. Instead of putting miles on their own car

I like the overall design, but the subscription-only sales platform is a serious no-go. The CEO you were interviewing for most of the video had a great number of things wrong with his paradigm for this car. The lease model for buying cars has ruined the marketplace for consumers and allowed manufacturers to artificially inflate the value of their cars well beyond what they're worth, and now here comes Canoo with a lease-only sales scheme. It's every car manufacturer's wet dream - taking people's money and never having to give them a product in return. I hope someone buys them out and decides to actually sell the thing, otherwise I don't see it getting off the ground. And considering how fast the EV landscape is changing at the moment, if they wait two years to start doing anything, someone will likely have already beaten them to the punch. Such a shame.

With mainstream manufacturers now producing EVs do we really need another startup with another concept that only looks good on paper? I'd rather wait to see a test drive of a production model with real world figures instead of another sales pitch to find investors. Instead of sideways seats, this would make a much better delivery van. Especially if they make the back look different to the front.

At the 10:00 mark the founder of the company is saying he expects people to live out of the cars because that is clearly the future. Homelessness for everyone. Rent your Canoo to live and work in. Miss a payment and get evicted from your home and job at the same time. Super efficient. Nice looking car. I'm not a fan of the rental only model.

Imagine that someone making a vehicle simpler where all the other are cramming as much and features they can into a vehicle. We all have "screens" even me I have a phone or iPad with me most of the time and a lot of the time my laptop too. This is actually a good business model, maybe not in all in places but here in Los Angeles it will probably work. Take a look at Los Angeles, almost half of the city are renting their homes (according to the latest census) many do not have garage or even parking spaces, in some parts of the city you have to pay to get a space, and if you go on trip in the city finding parking can be a problem too, Also consider rent is so high a lot of people cannot afford a car, or like the one gentleman said its a utility. I'm living temporarily in LA on business, so I left my car and brought my motorcycle and if I need a car for whatever reason I use on the EV car sharing programs. So a car sharing program makes sense. I park my bike on my small patio. Land lord told me not to bring it inside. One last thing, I. think once people get over their EV stigma once they realize once you get in and get going it will get you to wherever you need or want to go, just like any other vehicle, only you don't have any of the ownership cost. I'm primarily a motorcycle rider, I did not own a car for many years, I rented cars, truck or even vans when I needed them. And yes I'm looking forward to getting a Electric Motorcycle one day, but right now the ones with the longer range the insurance is too high and the smaller ones don't have enough range for a long ride.
