I'm half chinese, and my popo helped raised me speaking cantonese. Sadly my cantonese fluency didn't increase as my english fluency increased as I was raised in the US. There's a lot of phrases I can say, and even more that I can understand the basis of what they mean, but you breaking it down helps me understand the grammar and why these phrases mean what they mean. (I hope that made sense.) I just stumbled across your videos and they're helping me a lot fill in the blanks in my cantonese skills. So thank you! I look forward to learning more! :D

Hi Renée! I’m really glad you find them helpful!! I’ve never been to Australia but would love to go ... so many friends of mine are from there or studied there. As you probably know, I’m partial to the Yale system and Chinese U has a really good character reader set/system if you’re ever looking for a formal way to learn characters. Perfect format - but I like your tangents too. This makes it so much clearer. My books presented in a weird way so I never really understood why you could use a number to represent 10 min, 20 minutes, etc. :)

Hi Jordan! Hi Steve! Thanks so much for commenting!! I’ve been following you guys for awhile now and love your channel and your story!! Reminds me of my early days in so many ways, and I gotta say - serious admiration for doing so well with learning Cantonese in the States, Jordan! (Sorry, Steve, have to give Jordan special props! I tried and failed to learn in the States before coming to HK 😅) My story? In a nutshell, came to Hong Kong in 1988 with girlfriends (from HK) after university (UW Madison), met my husband (also from here) who didn’t speak hardly any English when I met him (and of course I barely spoke Cantonese) and now 25 years later we have two kids and speak each other’s language better but there are still some hilarious moments of miscommunication. 😂 I learned Cantonese any way I could - but like you guys, living with my awesome in-laws for awhile helped a ton since they don’t speak English at all. 😅 Thanks again for stopping by - I’m honored!!

Hi, thank you for this great lesson! I'm just wondering: is it common at all in Cantonese to use the "24h" format of telling time as it is in many countries outside of the United States? For example, do people in Hong Kong ever say, "sahp saam dim" to mean 13 o'clock (as in 1PM)? Tq! :)

I would say it is not common at all - at least I’ve never heard anyone say the time like that ☺️ I’ll be interested to see what others say ... for me, in all my 30+ years of living in HK, I’ve never heard anyone refer to time in 24h. There is another way to say 15, 30, 45mins: yat go gwat, leuhng go gwat, saam go gwat, 1 gwat means 15mins, but that's kind of old style that old people use.

By speaking, speaking a bit more, and then speaking even more ... :-D I wasn't always right, but luckily had people who were happy to correct me (even if it WAS discouraging at times!). It never seemed like work to me...and I've been able to meet so many more people than had I not learned to speak, so that kept/keeps me going, too. Thanks for commenting! :)
