Cape Verde is a country found in North west part of the African continent in the Central Atlantic Ocean. The country is one of the smallest in Africa with a total land coverage of only 4,000 square kilometers. It is made up of a total of 10 volcanic archipelagos, numerous beaches and also great for mountain trekking. The country is found around the Cap-Vert Peninsula around Senegal. In this video, we share the 10 interesting facts that you probably didn't know about Cape Verde.

Well, I called Cabo Verde during my Atlantic passage from Gibraltar to Caribbean, very nice and interesting place. In my opinion, its number “1” quality is its musical riches. You hear a Brasilian sound with Cuban flavor. Great musician and good performance…

@@guleiro dear guleiro, that is what I wanted to point out, the contraversy was the music was not like what you hear in Brasil, but more inclined to Cuban beats. I found that very interesting, because there must have been some culturally cross breeding at least on the musical front..
@guleiro
@guleiro 2 жыл бұрын
@@salimerdem7544 Yes, you are right. In a way on the musical sense it has been a back a fourth story in the last 400 years. The seeds of Brasil's musical heritage are rithms come from Africa (mostly from Angola) and Portugal. Cabo Verde was the crossroad that connected Europe, Africa and the Americas as every ship that wanted to reach those destinations had to stop there. More recently, with the advent of the radio in the early XXth century, brasilian music itself started to influence the music in Portugal and in the former portuguese colonies. So it has been a long history of mutual influences. The seeds came from Africa and Portugal initially but over time Brazil itself influenced others in the portuguese speaking world. The Cuban heritage is similar but their European roots come from Spain. Slightly different rithms from the portuguese. Indeed a very interesting history.

Cape Verde can be expensive to visit when traveling to the famous islands Sal and Boa Vista. Average prices for an all-inclusive holiday are $1000 for 10 days per person, often including flights when leaving from the UK or Europe, and depending on the season. The lesser-known islands are often cheaper to visit.

@@jetanimations -Big cities ….???? What do you mean ? What big city are you talking about? There is no such thing in Cape Verde. Praia is the capital, the biggest and it barely has a population of about 159,000 people. I would hardly call that a “big city.” It’s more of a big town rather than anything else. The whole country has 459,999 people and by most standards it’s considered a tiny place. It’s hard to believe that such a stark cultural contrast is possible despite the size of its geographical location and number of people who lives there. Sorry, perhaps I’m missing something but what you’re saying just doesn’t make too much sense

If I visit any country the last place I would visit is an American Franchise restaurant like a McDonalds. You know what I mean? Why would I travel all the way to another part of the world spend my money and time to do something that is same or similar to what I can do back home. we do have some greenhouse farming, I'm from Sal island (the driest one on my books) and even there there is some investment in that direction, I don't know if it would ever be possible to make it sustainable enough to make us self sufficient, i'm not an agriculture expert :|... water desalination... I think other islands have some natural water sources but it's not enough for the entire population, therefore water desalination technology isn't a foreign concept to us or something that needs to be introduced to us, it's actually our main source of "fresh" water. I hope this helps but, as I said, I don't know much about agriculture.

Although we haven't been for 2 years because of Covid, our previous 5 trips have been superb. We have Island friends on Sal and plan to go back this year. It's safe, clean and super friendly with a guaranteed climate although i cannot stress enough as inviting as the sea looks, it can be a very dangerous place. The rip currents are as bad as anywhere i've been around the World and you'll do very well to take heed of the beach flag colours, red being you don't go in at all. The pay the multilingual island hotel workers receive is very poor so we usually give a 2 Euro tip at breakfast and 3 at dinner. My wife takes underwear and sanitary products that she gives to the cleaners and workers, we take books for kindergartens and stationary for the teachers. We love Sal and its people, it really is the place to chill. Muito amor, from South London, England.

The islands did not have any permanent settlements before the Portuguese started settling in 1462. There is evidence of minor temporary camps made by West African fishermen where they left behind cooking materials like pots and fireplaces, but nothing significant like a settlement. People should be realist and neither be Euro-centric nor also be Afro-centric, take things for what they are and don't try to be revisionist just to boost your pride. Cape Verde has always been a place of miscegenation and we take pride of both our ancestors, Africans and Europeans.
@azrusonii
@azrusonii 2 жыл бұрын
@@yaronatzo1 there are tribes native to Cape Verde even to this day and many elders will tell you they settled on the island way before Columbus or any European influence. The Portuguese just wanted to erase the history as if they were the founders of the island which is not true. Its not about Afro centrism or Euro centrism its about facts and covered up history
@yaronatzo1
@yaronatzo1 2 жыл бұрын
@@azrusonii I don't know where you got that from, but you're wrong. The only thing close to what you're saying are the Rabelados in the island of Santiago who were fugitive slaves that fled to the Northern part of the island and the reason why they did that was because they were fleeing religious prosecution as they did not agree with the changes implemented in the Catholic Church where they went from the Old Testament to the New Testament. There are no Tribal communities in Cape Verde. You really have no understanding of Cape Verde, it's culture or history and as such shouldn't bring misinformation to those who might actually want to learn about its history.

You said Cabo Verde is an island nation. That means it's a part of Africa, but not on the continent. I'm aware of where Cape Verde is. It's a part of Macaronesia which includes The Azores, Madeira, and Canary Islands. The first 2 are a part of Portugal and the Canary Islands are a part of Spain. Some may say I'm being too technical, but nobody says Hawaii and Alaska are on the North American continent.

JEWS EXPELLED BY PORTUGAL TO WEST AFRICA: "King John II. in 1492,expelled all the Jews to the island of St.Thomas, which had been discovered in 1471, and to other Portuguese settlements on the continent of Africa; and from these banished Jews, the black Portuguese, as they are called, and the Jews in Loango, who are despised even by other Negroes, are descended.By these colonists, St.Thomas soon became a considerable place of trade, and valuable for its sugar plantations.Thirty years after their settlement, not less than one hundred and fifty-six thousand ar-robes(of thirty pounds weight each) of sugar were exported;and the engines of sixty sugar works,turned by slaves.These Negroes were purchased in Guinea, Congo, and Manicongo, and the colonists had plantations furnished with from one hundred and fifty to three thousand Negroe slaves." pg 141- The Critical Review: Or, Annals of Literature, Volume 57 - year 1784
