Adopting a policy from a country with a fraction of our population doesn't work the same here. 3. The next paycheck you get, deduct half of it to pay for those policies and see how much left you have to pay for your rent, home or family. How does half your income affect your life? How about paying twice as much for a car because of the inflated tax? High taxing also kills many businesses and jobs for people. 4. How would you like to pay for people who are in the country illegally and for those who are lazy and just don't want to work? They get the benefit from your labor and you get half a paycheck because of them. 5. Telling people about free Medicare and free school is a lie. The people selling this are refusing to tell America what I just told you. Ask any of them where the money comes from and you'll never get a straight answer. 6. Give government total control and power over program like this and you'll probably never get it back even if it goes horribly wrong. 7. Look at Venezuela. It was once the richest country and South America and now is in ruins because of socialist policies. Poverty and poor health care are what they got for those promises of free stuff.

Trucker_Pete Bernie sanders sometimes words things in a bad way but the actual policies he wants implemented are exactly the same as a social democracy like the Scandinavian countries. The Scandinavian countries have higher social mobility than the US, their markets also rank as more free than the US market. Being a social democracy doesn't mean you throw away the good things about capitalism. You can have a strong social safety net, universal education, medicare for all and still have a market economy. One thing doesn't take out the other which is exactly why America should elect Bernie Sanders as their next president. Anyone that screams "SOCIALISM" at bernie Sanders is a complete idiot with zero knowledge of what they are talking about. Sadly most Americans are complete idiots which is why the US is the ONLY modern country that doesn't provide healthcare to all it's citizens.

Norway was never a "free market economy", it is social democratic corporatism where the state owns over 70% of the economy (greater than Venezuela which is still majority private sector). Sweden also was social democratic corporatist until the 90s and now it's more of a mixed economy with a strong welfare state. Denmark is a market economy with 70% union membership and despite their differences all the Nordic model countries have universal healthcare which has been described as socialist by PragerU when attempting to implement it in the US.

If there were other free trade industries apart from the oil, who knows Venezuela would have been in a different situation today. I stay in South Africa, I can see my country disintegrating to the incompetence of government controlling State owned enterprise. We only have one electrical department, and it is state owned. If it were privatized there would be free reign for other electrical companies to open, to create competition. Its like we only have one option of Cola, we only have 'State owned Cola' and it tastes bitter, whereas in a free capitalized country you have choice between Coca Cola, Pepsi Cola, and if you want State owned Cola. One need look no further then schools and hospitals in low income U.S neighborhoods to determine how amazing capitalism has worked in the U.S. Great for the rich, not so much for the poor. If we're going to have honest discussions about politics, let's at very least apply critical thinking to our approach and challenge our own hypotheses with data.

The nomenclature and high-ranking officials would benefit from the most advanced medical treatment and services while leaving the happy proletariat to contend with dirty, poor and crowded hospitals. Just because counties that have had socialist revolutions tend to be poorer to begin with that does not mean that their healthcare or their quality of life in general hasn't improve faster than in capitalist countries with the same level of wealth. Furthermore while the elite is undoubtedly privileged in the services they are provided compared to everyone else the difference is waaaay smaller than between rich and poor under capitalism. Both system have problems but socialism is better for the majority and has the potential to be improved even further unlike capitalism.

@@ЯсенЧапкънов Not all countries that became socialist were poor. Eastern Europe before USSR imposed the communist regime was not so underdeveloped in the 1930s compared to Western countries. The gap that we have now was much closer 80-90 years ago. Both Western Europe and Eastern Europe were equally affected by the war, however nobody can deny that Western Europe developed tremendously after the war, while Eastern Europe remained behind. As for the healthcare and quality of life, on average a socialist country had between 5-10 years less lifespan than people living in a capitalist country. The healthcare system in Western Europe is much better than that of Eastern Europe. This is a fact all residents in Eastern Europe can tell you. As for the wealth gap, the proletariat wasn't happy because most people were equally poor. The nomenclature was still being showered in riches and wealth because they ran the country and the supreme leader's authority derived, like in any dictatorship, from the support of the oligarchy surrounding him. As you see Kim Jong Un with expensive watches, eating Western top quality food, driving expensive cars and all that, the situation was the same with the leaders in other communist countries. They deprived the general population of wealth, but not themselves, nor their nomenclature.

Of course the begining was hard and not insignificant amount of people were hurt or killed for resisting collectivisation or indirectly damaged by the expropriation of their lands and resources, but the lives saved by that very system outnumber them greatly. Furthermore in Bulgaria most serous problems we faced were social not economical and had much more to do with the global state of politics than with collective ownership of the means of production. Still things like religious suppression and forced renamings are legitimate criticisms of the regime, but not the economic system itself. It can be criticised in more nuanced ways. Admittedly we had tremendous support from USSR but even accounting for that socialism improved our quality of life much faster than capitalism is trying to right now after crashing economically most countries in Easter Europe during the "democratization" that crippled our productive potential. The 5-10 years statistic you mentioned is either comparison of lifespans today between equally wealthy countries with and without socialist past or between socialist and capitalist countries with different level of GDP. I'm obviously not 100% sure what you are refering to but I know from personal experience what it means to have reliable free healthcare and what it means for the continuation your very life to be comodified and priced as a product.

The lower classes, although they were not rich during pre-communist times, they fared still better as they were provided land after World War 1, land which was taken away by the communists, producing the 1950s famine. By taking away the land the peasants had, they not only pauperized the peasantry, forcing them to work in urban factories, they produced an urban supply chain issue which affected the country well into the 1960s. The less I speak about the 1980s deprivations and the default we escaped in 1979, the better. No lives were saved by the communist system, because no lives were endangered in the first place. They improved the lives of the few at the cost of the many. They made everyone equally miserable and the only period of relative economic stability was in the 1970s and that was due to loans. When the regime was no longer capable of paying back the loans during the oil crisis, it subjected the population to a period of starvation so that the leader can pay the country debt he himself took. I am speaking about Romania here. Bulgaria probably had a different path, but in general Bulgaria had it worse than Romania. And it emerged even poorer after communism than Romania. At least Romania opposed USSR plan of turning the economy into an agrarian one and focused some investments into the industry. Still, as things are today, they are WAY better than what happened during communism, by a long shot. Even the most poor people today live roughly the same lives as the middle class under communism.

@@joshuagoldglancz7144 cuz we tax consumption and income taxes very high. Everything has a VAT of between 10 and 25%. Petrol is taxed over 100%, making the taxes on fuel higher than the market price itself. Income is taxed progressively, meaning if you make over $100 000, suddenly you pay 53% of all income earned over that bracket. Then you have certain counties that have property tax. And we used to have an inheritance tax and wealth tax, but I'm not entirely sure if we still have those. Taxes are also included in everything we buy, and automatically paid before we get our salary, so we don't really have to "do" or "pay" the taxes the way Americans have to, we just check everything is right. And we can also chose to pay more or less taxes, and then get the money back or have to pay more back depending on the right amount. There's even an option to voluteerably send in more taxes than you're supposed to, without getting any paid back, but only morons do that lol. Then there are deductibles which reduces the tax or gets you more paid back when tht is due. So all in all it's a mixed economy where corporations have a lot of freedom to establish themselves and pay a decently low amount of taxes, but they have to pay high salaries, follow strict worker rights regulations and not pollute etc.

We should always remain more capitalist than socialist, but as it stands, public school, emergency services, road maintenance, etc. are all maintained under a socialist system. Food for thought: A common argument for capitalism is that you vote with your dollar in the economy, but everyone still remains equal because anyone can technically progress based on their level of work. But, even if this were true, (which it really isn't, but for the sake of argument I will say it is) that means that even then there is inherently a built in system where some people are worth more than others. Because even if you control the market with your dollar by "voting", the more dollars you have the more you matter then other people. In fact, inequality is quite literal then because a person with one dollar has only one "vote" while a person with 100 dollars has 100 votes, so the person with 100 dollars is thereby worth 100x more than the person with only one. In other words, the more money you have, the more votes you have, the more you matter than anyone who has less. Classic example of inequality. Sure, people can vote with their dollar, whatever. But what happens when a system allows people with an overwhelming amount of votes to vote in their own best interest, they will do so without hesitation. If a person were to think critically on the subject, you can see why people like myself desire Socailism, because we can recognize the contradiction presented by arguments like this. Not that anyone in this comments section is going to be here for a reasonable conversation, and I definitely expect to be harassed, I thought I would lay out this idea in a way that would allow some people to see the reverse. I don’t see a problem with some people being more valuable than others. Along as we are all treated equally under the law then I have no problem with a capitalist society with some sprinkles of socialism here and there to protect people from monopoly and oligopoly power. A dollar is not just a dollar and a vote is just not a vote. A dollar and a vote represent value in a person, place, or thing. It would not make sense to make people or resources equal in terms of value because everyone and everything has a different measure of output.

Completely wrong. Business are there to make money. Maybe they start out wanting to help others, but later on almost all companies instead try to figure out how to profitize every last bit from their product. And they need to. If they don't, their competition will most likely crush them. Greed is the reason why most other systems fail. It powers capitalism. Here's a question for you, why do advertisements exist if companies only intend to provide services to customers? And why are most advertisements engineered to play on people's bad habits so they are more likely to try it, instead of just presenting themselves as an option and leaving the user to actually choose. Why do some manifacturers make products intentionally break down after a certain amount of usage? It's because that makes things more profitable. If you're in this world with only the intention to provide for people, you likely won't make it anywhere. I don't think we have any system that is better right now. But don't mispresent capitalism. It is quite dirty.

Alright, most of the points seemed correct, but "common sense" is all you need, isn't really the best method. Let me common sense a little back... First: I agree with you. Capitalism is generally a better idea and the more socialism, the less economic democracy there is. That makes sense. But to prove this point you gave the example of the economy uprising since 2017. Even if one uses the example from 1917 until now, the GDP would be steadily rising. How much of this is not opening up a more free market, but perhaps just simply advancements in technology or other factors such as the global economy becoming better in general? Second: I live in a really rural part of the country, but I think this can speak to big cities too. Public roads? Public education? These are not capitalist ideas. They are actually strongly socialist things. I would not want to pay to fix the main roads and back roads to my house by myself, we wouldn't be able to. Education is so important because, without it, this entire country could quickly fall apart. Third: I think common sense would support the fact that technology is becoming more and more advanced. In some cases, it is already cheaper to have a machine to produce the wealth needed for the "free stuff" (as mentioned in the video) than it is to hire someone to do it. This will only become more of a problem in the future as simple jobs in factories, mills, and transport will be able to produce more products with fewer people to work them. What will happen to the people who don't have professional licenses, degrees, and educations? The Answer: I think that there needs to be a balance between Socialism and Capitalism. The fact is, either extreme can be equally as bad. Currently, we have a blend of the two and there are people fighting tooth and nail with each other about it. I am all for helping people in need, but on the other hand, I don't want everyone waiting for the "free stuff" to come to them... This is why I think we need a social and economic fall back to catch the people who will fall behind and supply them with the bare essentials to live. At the same time, we need to give people an incentive to work and a desire to attain a better lifestyle. In all reality, I don't have all the answers, these are just my thoughts on things and I hope some other people can benefit from my argument. Please feel free to explain where I go wrong, as healthy debate will hopefully solve this problem. Have a nice day!

I remember being in AP U.S. History and we used to learn about "trust-busting" and how monopolies were supposed to be broken up, but then I related it to today's market and for most industries and brands, there are less than ten or so major companies. Even if there seems to be a lot of choices, really it's all just the same corporate owner under many different brands and names. Take Proctor and Gamble for example. They alone own Tide, Olay, Vicks, Downy, Bounty, Ariel, Always, Pantene, Gain, Febreze, Gillette, Oral-B, Pampers & Pampers, Crest, Charmin, Dawn, Pepto Bismol, and over fifty other brands. Luxottica, the eyeglasses company owns over eighty percent of the major brands who sell eyeglasses. Walmart and Amazon might not fit the definition of "monopoly", but it's not as if someone can start a company today and stand a reasonable chance at opposing them on the open market. While I'm all for quality products being cheaper, I don't necessarily like the fact that many many jobs are being taken away and all of our money is going towards the same few companies. If there is a way to instill some actual competition that will bring back jobs without making things unreasonably expensive or destroying the quality of products, I think this is the balance we need to achieve between Socialism and Capitalism. Too much Capitalism allows monopolies to form and it allows people to become dependent on the monopolies, which is ultimately really risky and can be harmful if anything were to happen to in our economy. Too much Socialism drives the overall gross domestic product down because no matter how hard one works, they will always meet a barrier on their company or business. I agree with you when you say Socialism is a misunderstood term. When people say, "Capitalism is always good and Socialism is always bad" I don't believe they truly understand the pros and cons to both sides. But having these conversations is a good way to get different viewpoints and gain an understanding of the subject as a whole.

Furthermore, human potential won’t be squandered or wasted as it is now (for example, at present 29,000 children under the age of five die each day from preventable causes; quite apart from its immorality and the untold misery and suffering it causes, what a massive waste of human potential this is alone! - that won’t happen under socialism), so the pool of human creativity will grow exponentially. Goal: Reduce child mortality Nor will trillions of dollars be wasted each year on useless weapons of death: $1,570,000,000,000: how much the world spent on arms this year Or on marketing and advertising, etc., areas of employment that only make sense in a capitalist world founded on competition, and hence on massive waste. So, under socialism, full employment will in the end mean a couple of hours a week, or less, for everybody (except in very specialised areas, like surgery, much of which will be largely under computer control, anyway), and the implementation of a truly self-developmental and leisure society for the first time in human history. Contrary to what some think (mostly anti-communists ignorant of Marxism), this won’t be a Utopia. That is because, even though those who do the work will be in control of society, humanity will face many problems, some of which they won’t be able to solve or solve fully, So, this won’t be a perfect society (a “workers’ paradise”), but it will be one in which ordinary people democratically make the decisions, and they will do so in their favour - not the elite who currently make such decisions in their favour.

The means of production became popular, the resources were nationalized, there was no additional property, the economy was planned, like inside any corporation, which ensured the solution of all tasks, medicine and education were free, housing was free, prices were fixed, the USSR was the second economy in the world, won World War II, this was a war of the capitalist world against a socialist country, and the USSR won this war. The price of victory was set by capitalism and had to be paid. Is a market with its self-regulation better than a scientific approach can set production priorities. Unfortunately, after Stalin there was a systematic bribery and replacement of the right people in the governance of the country. Slow substitution of concepts. And as a result, in 1991, the USSR was destroyed. The benefits of a free market economy is usually the first thing you learn in an intro to microeconomics course at the university level. You will have a hard time finding any economist support the Marxist economics field. They are usually all political activists.

Hey, I'd like to point out that No, they're not jobless. At least not all of them. Most of them have gone to college working jobs that they don't like or the very bare mininum in order to survive. One "liberal" Socialist that I argued with had a job as a manager at a major food chain. He has an extreme hatred of the people who live in the fancier houses and hates the fact that he can't even afford a dress shirt. I'm personally much poorer than he is, but I DO NOT support the idea of Socialism at all. He thinks that we should tax the Rich and Business owners of their "excess wealth", but he can't even define what "excess wealth" is. Dunning-Krugger Effect: You don't know what you don't know. Socialist Leaders like to keep terms like this vague so that they can change it to mean whatever they want/need it to mean. To him, it might mean a second house, to me it means owning that IPhone/computer he's typing on. What really warped his perception of Socialism vs Capitalism wasn't the fact that he doesn't understand how jobs work, but rather a misconception on how "being rich" and "being poor" works……… Also he lives in California, where the average Housing is DOUBLE of the national average. First peice of advice I gave him was to move the Hell out of California and see how much better us "poorer states" are living compared to his.

Capitalism and socialism both have their pros. What is wrong is saying that only one side is right. Consumers should be able to buy whatever they want at their desired price and capitalism supports that. Businesses should not be able to sell products that harm the consumer or own too much of the economy and Socialism supports that. If people took a second to turn to the other side for just a moment of time they will see how in some situations an idea works and in other situations an idea doesn't. There are no "versus" in an economy. We are humans and we support each other nothing else is more important than that.

In a capitalist system, you are free to change. In a socialist system, you are not. Anyway, there's not the least example of a successful socialist regime. That has never happened anywhere in the world, never mind the place, time and particular conditions. A systems that has never worked proves it can't work.

Russia accepted to make a separate peace with Germany in order to make the revolution. They lost lots of territories which they got back later on thanks to the Versailles treaty. In the late 20s, the Soviet Union was ruined. Lenin was forced to come back on some pillars of socialism with his New economic Policy. Peasants were allowed to keep part of their production for their own consumption or to sell it. In the 30s, Stalin took advantage of foreign investments in the Soviet Union. As for WW2, the Soviet Union won it only thanks to the war material supplied by America.
