8 years later... Giving a random homeless person food in and of itself is not a bad act; It is generous and might be exactly what they want/need. However, whether it's intended or not, giving food instead of money implies that the donor felt the recipient couldn't be trusted with money so the donor chose to go out of their way to give the recipient what they felt was best. It's insulting regardless of intention or correctness and robs the recipient of their agency. If they didn't ask for food, don't give someone less fortunate food.
